UK spring/summer 2026
UK_Palms replied to UK_Palms's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEAfter two days of 35C / 95F and the hottest day and night in May on record, yet another record breaking heatwave is on the way this June. But first to document the May episode in here… Now onto the current heatwave. Some proper disgusting model output. ARPEGE has Wednesday as the hottest day with 41-42C / 106-108F temperatures. UKV has the highest temperatures on Thursday but is also showing 41-42C / 106-108F. No surprise to see Red warnings issued by Met Office for extreme heat with 40C expected. Probably the most shocking chart yet is the 30C / 86F nighttime minimum on ARPEGE in Somerset for Wednesday night. That is just insanity. Watch this space… -

quaman58 replied to Mauna Kea Cloudforest's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEBeauties, one of my favorite palms. I tried one years ago in an exposed location which did not survive. However I’ve had two under canopy since then that are doing just fine. Veitchias in general just scream “tropics”. -

What gives??
happypalms replied to Jeffry's topic in PALMS IN POTSIt looks like temperature shock, growing in a warm spot, perhaps acclimating to its new home. Let it dry out and keep it in a warm position. Trim of the dying leaves. And as for a rain plan as long as it has good drainage I can’t see why you cannot just place it outside and treat it like any other container palm. Dont fuss over it they are as tough as nails. -

Lanonia sp Large Mottled
happypalms replied to Alberto's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEGot a couple hundred of them in tubes, they seem quite tough and easy to grow so far, already taking 5 degrees celcius this winter. No special protection just sitting outside. And showing good mottling at a young age! -

Weather Station Experiments and Brand Comparisons
kinzyjr replied to kinzyjr's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATEFor me, the choice was to do the backyard to get the better temperature readings. Mine was purchased to give better reporting of the temperatures over time than I previously had. Either way, unless the yard is large and completely open, it's very difficult for a suburban home to meet the criteria for official weather reports. There is an Ambient Weather 2902 mounted on a 30-ft pole down the road that I am sure was done to monitor wind speed. -

happypalms posted a topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsA rare flowering Australian plant, due to habitat lose and fires. This little flower is being seen less and less in my area. They are still in patches here and there, but those patches are getting smaller and smaller. Often seen on roadsides but due to grass cutting in those areas you don’t see them like you used too. It is illegal to pick them as they are a protected plant. They grow in sandy soil in coastal heath land. chill replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHello, Since I was in the middle school when the lockdown of covid 19, there was a double foxtail palms next to my house and i was just staring at the tree because it had me interest on it. So in 2021, I started to collect some of the foxtail seeds that were falling from the tree and start to plant with just using some basic pots, plastic bottles, and a regular soil that i took it direct from the backyard. There was a lot of attempts of me trying to grow it but they were all failed sadly. Then in 2022 until 2023, I bought some polybags and also some palm seedlings like coconut and rhapis excelsa from the local e-commerce and it was really cheap for the price like about less than a dollar so I thought it was a good deal. So I think for me it was really an adventurous experience😅- Veitchia joannis In highland garden

N8ALLRIGHT replied to Brodogfish's topic in Palms/Plants/Seeds WantedDid you ever find one? I saw there was a seller on Etsy that currently has them. I can't personally vouch for the seller but it doesn't look like a scammer. I have one in the ground in 6b Missouri and it's kicking butt, nowhere near trunking yet but really starting to put on size. I purchased from ethical desert but it was several years ago. Good luck - Australian flannel flower
