Bump. These surely are slow when young. I've got a couple of gifted three leaf seedlings in pots that are just crawling. Wondering whether anyone has experimented with added lime or limestone to the growing media and if so, whether it's made a noticeable difference? @HolyNewBee did you get some to germinate in the end? Very interested to see how your cold tolerance test works out!

Interesting that it looks chewed but not recently and it appears blackened. Might be fungal rot. Sick palms are the ones that get the bad fungal infections. It could be another insect pest that I have no idea about. I grew 4 bizzies in the AZ desert for 7 years./ They grew well and were on irrigation timer so they got plenty of water(30-40 gallons delivered overnight in 5 hrs) 2-3 times a week depending on season. I had one due of a root rot fungus, too near the more frequently irrigated flower bed. It died in winter after a 21-22F short cold event. When I dug it up the roots told me all I needed to know, the smell was not pleasant. I never saw the symptoms you are seeing. I wonder if those beetles can even survive in the arizona desert.

Hey there everyone. Its been a while. Had a rough NYC winter this year. Lots of snow and cold wet weather. Windmill Palm took a little beating!! But still thriving! 16ft to top of crown, 12ft to top of trunk. Just gave her a prunning. Unfertlized seeds avaliable.. not sure if you can pollinate them? Good luck to all this winter!! Bobby

This palm has had trouble for a long time I posted it not long ago and @sonoranfans said it might be a boron and water problem so that’s easy to take care of and it’s not going to be a quick fix,but then I noticed this frond that I forgot to post earlier and got me to start wondering what is going on?Looks to me like something was chewing on it!!

Went to just do a quick heat check and figured I'd check a couple other things while I was in the grow room. The heat index in there is 127°F right now, and I've left the heat mats plugged in but they're not cycling on - they're set at 85 and the thermostat says the soil is 97. Anyway. Y'all think these are ready to come out of the baggie?

Where can I find some walking trees? I hope they walk when I tell them and stay where I tell them and they don't do as they please! My small Wodyetia only gets early morning sun, about 2 hours. Then shade. I've learned a lesson that anything non-native wants afternoon sun in Greece, no matter what the Internet tells you. Only local plants can tolerate our sun.

Yep, but they love sun during our prolonged cool and moist winter time. Perhaps we should use walking trees for ambulatory shade, sort of Triffids!

to me this looks like a classic Licuala grandis problem. They are just ‚insuportable‘. Everybody says so. keeping potted palms indoors on the other hand, is not such a big endeavor. u just need to find the right species. Kerriodoxa, Chamaedorea radicalis, C. oblongata, C. ernesto-augusti. … Endless trial and error and you find plenty of tropical understory palms. Especially if u don’t have a garden 😂

They are almost 5 years old. From.RPS seed. I guess they grow faster without a pot.😂 But I am pretty happy with them. Colder seasons on the sunny window indoors (Southern Germany) Any similar potted Copernicia from your side?

Blanched fronds means desiccated ones in Bismarckia. Unlike other palm spp dried fronds appear papery white in Bismarckia. Weevil infestation causes a secondary fungal infection and Bismarckia is quite frail, when a fungal disease breaks out inside the bud.

In my climate "a little mulch" is rapidly eaten by microbes. I put down 3" thickness of top mulch every 2 years.

WHen my bismarckia was hit by palmetto weevils, the newest leaves blanched and wrinkled a bit. No sign of trunk damage at all they went in through the newer leafbases. When it was cut down the inside near the grow point was eaten, hollowed. I have no idea how other beatles/weevils hit palms. The eating of leaflets was not in evidence at all. By the time you notice damage it has 2-3 weeks to live at most. Might be desert heat/humidity slows them down, saw you had 117F the other day, brings back memories of slipping around while auto tires melt as you drive.

That is painful stuff. The high pressure zones seem to be dominating the pattern this year. I hate them. I’d rather cloud and a bit of rain drizzle at this time of year. Has it been a dry July for you this year? It has been here. What’s the bet your Bangalow will grow out of it eventually.

I’ll post this update on the Chrysalidiocarpus Blacki that I was able to sprout . The seeds came to me via our very own @DoomsDave from Larry Blacks palm , I believe. I only lost a few but managed to get 5 healthy babies into pots and in the greenhouse. They are liking our tropical heat spell . Harry Like C. Lanceolata thes have a glossy appearance already, so excited to see these doing well.

That is a lovely hybrid . We had a guy that did hybrids and I once purchased a Chamaedorea Potutalensis/ Elatior hybrid . Within 6 months it started taking over my shade house! The palm was like “ Jack and The Beanstock” ! It was beautiful but way bigger than I wanted so I managed to get it in my pick up truck and rehome it over the hill to my mentor’s jungle . The fronds were large , like Tepejelote , and it grew along the sides of the shade house . It pushed everything aside as it traveled along . I’ve never had a palm grow like that! Harry
