You’re not alone , Jim. I had a beauty ( Wodyetia Bifurcata)for 7-8 years with about 7’ of trunk . One year it started pushing shorter fronds and looking poor , eventually it died . The other one I had died within a year of planting , I have tried everything to save them. I have a palm friend a few blocks away that has one that is huge and healthy ( producing lots of viable seeds!) . He also had another one that did exactly what mine did . I tell people “ hit and miss” for these . I have two small ones that I bought from a private grower who was getting rid of them because he lost so many . He said “ I quit !” I got a great deal and they are plugging along slowly . Some gardens have really nice Foxtail palms , I just haven’t figured them out yet. Harry

We didn't see any tree-size adenium. There were so few dorsteinias that I can't characterize their scale. The tree cucumber, Dendrosycios, was tree-size, however.

I’d love to try some! I’m new to palms, and would love to try my hand at germinating palm seeds. I’m a big fan of fan palms.

That would be something special . Dave has quite a few varieties down at his place , my favorite being the Chrysalidiocarpus ( Dypsis) Onilahensis “ Droopy” . A truly stand out palm in a Genera with many spectacular species , including that one of yours and @WaianaeCrider . Harry

I have a decipiens about that same size that also set seed for the first time this year. This thread has given me some hope - a rat decided to do me a favor of cleaning all the seeds of their fruit while they were still green, but had stopped noticeably getting bigger. The fruit was soft and apparently tasty, but the seed were still green. I didn't realize they stayed green. So maybe they were ready? I did cut a few open and they had beautiful white endosperm, but I could not find an embryo in the two seeds I cut, which was really surprising to me because the seeds look perfect and developed quickly during warm weather (may to July pretty much). I will just put the rest in a baggie and hope that at least some are OK. Matt

I had a Wodyetia growing right next to the Foxy Lady and it always struggled to grow for years. Several other Wodyetia trials went poorly too. Pure Veitchia never worked for me either but the hybrid just keeps cruising along.

I am an avid collector of cycads and really enjoy Cycas Cycads. Do you happen to have any others available for sale along with these beauties?

Cycas debaoensis - 1st leaf of the year (late July) of the three I have in-ground. Growing out from under the shade of my Trachycarpus princeps. My hope is that any leaf-chewing insects ignore it and choose more tasty plants.😉

I could only imagine a palm garden of nothing but Dypsis species, no other palm except for the whole dypsis genus could you imagine what that garden would look like. Richard

I wasn't sure since I've def veered away. The seedlings are still there, they're just surrounded by non palms.

It does, but I've grown to prefer community pots with a baggie over them after seeing @teddytn videos. Less roots to untangle. Nothing grows sideways. These are stragglers from seeds i got last year, just some Minors.

This looks great Jim! Unfortunately I think wodyetia performed better for me in Fresno. This hybrid really dislikes the extended 60/40 temps we get from Nov through February. Tons of spotting and leaf die back - even absent any frost. I rehomed mine to someone in LA at a 15g size. Sometimes I wish I would have planted it anyway instead of rehoming it.

Looks great @Brandon39.5 we did swaps on plants a year or so back and the double you gave me doesn't look as good as yours. Mine is smaller and not quite so lush green in colour. Its outside on the terrace for half the year and indoors the rest. I dont use any additional heat when its inside

Raining on and off today everything is soaked good The bucket says about an inch last 24 hrs and its still raining good enough to get good and wet in under a minute, should have put the gore tex shell on. I emptied it again to see what accumulates today and tomorrow.

It’s the beginning of soil making on lava in the background of this Metroxylon is a pile of trash tree. It will take 2 to 3 years with the pigs help to get turned into soil so I’m just gonna keep throwing debris behind this bloke. We are building the soil up for a nearby rainbow eucalyptus, but the palm will benefit as well..

This is why I dig my own, most landscapers know nothing about palms and even some dont know much about gardening. I didn't want to be hostile as I have not met your landscaper. Knowing what I know now I would be upset as this was easily prevented. I hate to see folks come on palmtalk when palms are already very sick. Troubleshooting without digging and observing is difficult and sometimes a recovery window is gone. And most of us know or have already been advised how to test and prep a hole in construction dirt or any dirt. I have parts of my yard, under the back fence where the builders brought in some dense whitish clay to support the fence. The hardest pic axe dig per inch I have ever done. Fortunately it was only 18"-2' thickness up by the fence. Anything planted near it is stunted, its water repellent dirt, its like a container, probably purposefully so to keep the fence footing in place with our rain. Construction dirt can be completely inhospitable to plants. I am an old palmnut, I would dig and dig till I found some drainage as drainage is essential to some degree for all plants. It might take me a few weeks but I would reclaim that land. The deep rooted palms, like alfredii, that are drought tolerant especially need it. I am sorry for your loss.

Although I've sent out several hundred of these, I have more to offer if anyone is interested. A very prolific tree.

This is one that I have been able to keep under control. Harry It has enjoyed giving us a garden view over our main bathtub in our master bedroom without the need for a curtain. I planted this over 20 years ago . I bought it from Jungle Music as a Caryota “ something” ( I forget , but rare ) single trunk . I called Phil when it started suckering and he said it got mixed up and is indeed C. Mitis .🙁Last year I cut 3-4 huge , flowering trunks out and thinned the base. There are plenty of younger stems that will be tall enough when the next , older trunks flower. It seems perpetually regenerating . This is one of my smallest clumps , others are used for privacy and are much bigger!
