Way back when the Remarkable Palms of Tampa Bay thread was started, many of these palms graced the thread. The palms on this thread come from City Hall, the parking garage areas, and the surrounding landscapes that do not include Hollis Gardens or Lake Wire since they have their own threads. This thread picks up after the municipal gardens were exposed to 25F during the February 2026 Freeze. With perhaps the best microclimate in the metropolitan area, there are palms that survive here that are difficult as little as 6 miles east or west of City Hall. When we give tours of the palms collections, this area is one that raises the most eyebrows. Carpoxylon macrospermum - City Hall South Entrance Pseudophoenix sargentii - City Hall South Entrance - Damaged, but recovering well Chambeyronia oliviformis (Kentiopsis oliviforms)- City Hall East Entrance - Damaged, but recovering. This palm had strikes against it before the freeze due to overtrimming. Satakentia liukiuensis - Parking Garage West Entrance - Damaged, but recovering well Pseudophoenix sargentii - Parking Garage - Damaged, but recovering well. It should set seeds this year. Pseudophoenix sargentii - Parking Garage - Damaged, but recovery is slower. One may end up dying. For now, this is enough to get the thread started. It gives @SubTropicRay a glimpse at a few species he asked about in the Lake Hollingsworth thread. There is a Pseudophoenix that survived near the midpoint of the walking trail, but that photo and post will have to wait for now.

Actually, early in the conversation I should have imparted this valuable tip... I'm in Florida. So, drainage is seldom an issue. But, I ALWAYS fill the hole with water before placing the palm into it. Normally, the water drains quickly. But, I have had instances where roots or other buried debris impacts the drainage. So, filling the hole with water and watching the drainage is a good practice. Since in this case it seemed like the tree was being installed by professionals, I just assumed they knew what they were doing. My bad... The shame here is that except for this drainage issue, I still think this tree is the perfect selection. Once established Becarriophoenix alfredi are bullet proof. Here at my Orlando area home, I planted my specimen as a 12" long seedling that I bought on the internet years ago. It had two strap leaves and arrived packed in damp newspaper. I sited it in my front yard where it continues to grow to this day. It is starting to reach monstrous proportions. The base is about 15 inches in diameter, but it hasn't started to trunk yet. The leaves are huge and to the top of the emerging frond is abiout 16 feet. In time, this tree is going to be a monster. Back in February, we had a cold event that we hadn't seen in at least 40 years. I got down to 24F. My Roystonea was about 70% burned. It has been growing here since 2001 (25 years) and is about 40 feet tall. Fortunately, it has already grown most of its crown back. I have Adonidia palms growing on both sides of my garage. About half of them survived and are regrowing their crowns. But, the Becarriophoenix alfedi just laughed at the cold and continues to grow. Once established, it seems to be the perfect palm for my zone 9b/10a location. The leaves do resemble those of a coconut palm. But once the massive size of these trees becomes apparent, all comparisons to coconut palms go out the window. I truly hope this person amends the site to facilitate proper drainage and gets a replacement Becarriophoenix alfredi. I am certain they will be happy with their choice.

Matt, Mine was from Jack and Arlene of Bluebell Palms in Anaheim. Maybe mi e is from same lot as yours. This one had a sucker that died a long time ago.

I just had success with a couple Chambeyronia Hookeri. I also have about 10 C. Macrocarpa seeds n soil waiting to sprout . I will say that Chambey’s have large seeds and very large sprouts when they show themselves . I didn’t use bottom heat so it took months for them. Good luck with your latest batch , Richard. You’re not alone , Jim. I had a beauty ( Wodyetia Bifurcata)for 7-8 years with about 7’ of trunk . One year it started pushing shorter fronds and looking poor , eventually it died . The other one I had died within a year of planting , I have tried everything to save them. I have a palm friend a few blocks away that has one that is huge and healthy ( producing lots of viable seeds!) . He also had another one that did exactly what mine did . I tell people “ hit and miss” for these . I have two small ones that I bought from a private grower who was getting rid of them because he lost so many . He said “ I quit !” I got a great deal and they are plugging along slowly . Some gardens have really nice Foxtail palms , I just haven’t figured them out yet. Harry

We didn't see any tree-size adenium. There were so few dorsteinias that I can't characterize their scale. The tree cucumber, Dendrosycios, was tree-size, however.

I’d love to try some! I’m new to palms, and would love to try my hand at germinating palm seeds. I’m a big fan of fan palms.

Help!! We've had these 2 queen palms for about 5 years. On both trees, the older fronds always collapse at the base while they are still green. The new fronds always come out fine and look healthy. I have noticed that they start getting some brown spots where the bend occurs, not long before they collapse. This is definitely not freeze damage or even wind damage, as this has happened to every single frond on both trees for several years. Has anyone had any experience with this? In the pictures, I tried to show the dark spots at the base, and also show the older fronds that collapsed and then turned brown (I usually cut them down right away, but we have been out of town for a couple months). Any help is greatly appreciated!

That would be something special . Dave has quite a few varieties down at his place , my favorite being the Chrysalidiocarpus ( Dypsis) Onilahensis “ Droopy” . A truly stand out palm in a Genera with many spectacular species , including that one of yours and @WaianaeCrider . Harry

I have a decipiens about that same size that also set seed for the first time this year. This thread has given me some hope - a rat decided to do me a favor of cleaning all the seeds of their fruit while they were still green, but had stopped noticeably getting bigger. The fruit was soft and apparently tasty, but the seed were still green. I didn't realize they stayed green. So maybe they were ready? I did cut a few open and they had beautiful white endosperm, but I could not find an embryo in the two seeds I cut, which was really surprising to me because the seeds look perfect and developed quickly during warm weather (may to July pretty much). I will just put the rest in a baggie and hope that at least some are OK. Matt

I had a Wodyetia growing right next to the Foxy Lady and it always struggled to grow for years. Several other Wodyetia trials went poorly too. Pure Veitchia never worked for me either but the hybrid just keeps cruising along.

I am an avid collector of cycads and really enjoy Cycas Cycads. Do you happen to have any others available for sale along with these beauties?

Cycas debaoensis - 1st leaf of the year (late July) of the three I have in-ground. Growing out from under the shade of my Trachycarpus princeps. My hope is that any leaf-chewing insects ignore it and choose more tasty plants.😉

I could only imagine a palm garden of nothing but Dypsis species, no other palm except for the whole dypsis genus could you imagine what that garden would look like. Richard

I wasn't sure since I've def veered away. The seedlings are still there, they're just surrounded by non palms.

It does, but I've grown to prefer community pots with a baggie over them after seeing @teddytn videos. Less roots to untangle. Nothing grows sideways. These are stragglers from seeds i got last year, just some Minors.

This looks great Jim! Unfortunately I think wodyetia performed better for me in Fresno. This hybrid really dislikes the extended 60/40 temps we get from Nov through February. Tons of spotting and leaf die back - even absent any frost. I rehomed mine to someone in LA at a 15g size. Sometimes I wish I would have planted it anyway instead of rehoming it.

Looks great @Brandon39.5 we did swaps on plants a year or so back and the double you gave me doesn't look as good as yours. Mine is smaller and not quite so lush green in colour. Its outside on the terrace for half the year and indoors the rest. I dont use any additional heat when its inside
