Sabal minor naturalizing in TN is for sure different than it being native. Just recorded an episode of the Palmcast an hour ago where we all talk about Sabal minors range throughout the southeast specifically. The main point of contention that it’s most certainly not native in TN is the fact that the neighboring counties directly touching the TN state border in all the states surrounding TN are absent of Sabal minor as well.

Ok thank you. This is really good to know. So everything survive except the canaries. Dates are surviving, med fans are. They died last time because I wasn’t watering enough. Right now every canary has 6, 4gph emitters. And I was doing 45 minutes 2-3 times per day 6 days a week initially and I pulled back and then I started to see frond regression. So what would you recommend time wise with 6, 4gph emitters?

We have one cat on thyroid meds , one diabetic that gets shots twice a day , and another cat we have to do IV drip for hydration until we get pathology report back. Unfortunately , all our cats are old so health issues are just part of their life. As @happypalms says , part of the family ….”in good times or bad times , going half mad times…” . I've actually harvested seeds off the Hardin County Cluster multiple times once in 2019 and a few times since. They grow incredibly slow, almost as slow sabal Etonias. I have harvested seeds from naturalized clusters in Shelby county and those grow significantly faster.

A local nursery in Ventura had a few of these for sale a few years ago . Still kicking myself for not grabbing one 🫤.They seem bigger than some of the other Chamaedorea. Harry @kylecawazafla … nice pic ! It looks like they can handle a bit of filtered sun too!

In 2019 I received some seed of Oregon Grown Trachycarpus Fortunei var. Nainital. Compared to Trachycarpus Fortunei this thing is extremely stiff, and extremely cold hardy. It grows a lot slower than generic fortunei. The 2024 event did not damage it for some reason. This has been in the ground it's entire life here in SW Tennessee. I was wondering if anyone here had similar results with these.

We are getting lucky here rained 2 1/2 inches the past 4 days and its raining pretty good now. I see it hitting sarasota and pinellas the past few days too. Sarasota county is getting hammered now on the radar and its coming north. My last walk at the retention ponds looked like the water levels were right up to the grass.

Bay, such as where you're located, aren't as effected by them, ....compared to communities on the east side of the bay ..or down in San Jose.

What a week! 117 F high. 97F morning low. 70 mph winds... Copernicia macroglossa that was previously tied up is now showing it's true potential in the Arizona desert. Experimenting with a Malaysian Dwarf Coconut in Fallbrook Sunset zone 23 USDA zone 10a about 15 miles inland from the coast. Its in a hot sunny spot that sees direct all year sun and even direct winter sun. Last winter weeks of mid 80s and low 90s in March. This spot builds a lot of heat and sees little to no frost on this part of my property. Might have to shelter it first couple of winters but we'll see how this goes.

I do have them but this is larger.

So after reading about the Orange County coconuts somewhere around the Santa Ana area and especially the one in Corona that persisted for years I thought I'd give it a try in zone 10a in Fallbrook in northern inland San Diego County. I'm about 15 miles inland and get a lot of heat. Might have to put a popup greenhouse around it first couple winters during cold or near freezing nights. Basically where I am in Fallbrook is sunset zone 23. Highly thermal even in the winter. It seems almost every year we have a lot of hot dry Santa Ana winds in the Fall and throughout the winter well into spring so its been warm a lot. Last winter we were mid 80's for weeks on end even a couple days in early march into the 90s consistently enough even my bananas started pushing new leaves in late March. Nights sometimes cool off quick but rarely freeze. I was noticing this year north of us in LA it was even warmer than my location doing work there in the winter felt actually kind of hot during mid days in what seemed like well in the mid to upper 80s in the middle of winter. For those who live inland southern California it might be worth trying. I'm surprised these aren't attempted inland LA basin more often where they get a good deal of heat, less freezes and generally just benefit from the heat island effect. I assume if you have a hot south facing sheltered pocket on your property it could work if you're far enough away from the cold ocean water which really stunts these guys. I planted this little guy (Malaysian Dwarf) in the middle of a heatwave its been in the upper 90's low 100s outside during the day hardly getting under 70 at night. Our nights recently have been basically tropical because of the north American monsoon humidity hanging around but also the offshore ocean water has been in the mid 70s. Here's a bunch of thermal reads even the retaining wall is in the 90s in the shade at 11am. The ground mount solar is pretty close by should offer some decent reflected heat. This little spot sees full sun even during winter solstice for pretty much almost the whole day since it's south facing and is sheltered by a little hill a fence and huge trees to block cold winds. You can see the dwarf cavendish banana doing really well behind the coco. I'm seeing wet soil over 100F so to me it seems this spot builds some serious heat.

Those extremes are not restricted to just SoCal. We’ve had 100° plus temperatures here too at any time in summer and into early autumn. We just don’t have the Santa Ana winds to go with those high temperatures.

2024 was a radiational freeze and temperatures were all over the place briefly. I don't think it stayed cold long enough to actually cause damage to anything. It warmed up rapidly. I also don't think it got quite as cold as AccuWeather says. The damage there was I think is more consistent with 0°F same at my house. Trachycarpus fully defoliated while sabal minor unscathed. Sabal palmetto fried a little bit. But shockingly all of my Trachy's survived that event unprotected

Unfortunately, this isn’t the greatest picture either. But it’s an awesome little palm. This one’s considerably overhead, as you can see reaching up to the second story. Always looks great though.

Not sure if you have any Phoenix Roebelini around but it looks just like the volunteers that sprout in my garden near mine. Harry
