@SCVpalmenthusiast unfortunately Lethal Bronzing / TPPD is still killing most of the Phoenix palms around here. I don't know if Canariensis are super susceptible or not, but I've seen a LOT of Sylvesters and Dactylifera dying in the area. I've seen two big Canaries die, but I can't say why. One has been malnourished for the past 25+ years, always half yellow with tiny fronds. The other was at a local nursery in a 100g pot, and just keeled over one day. It could have been anything, I guess.

Now entering day 59 since it last rained here. On Saturday it will be 2 months without any rain. It also reached 38C / 100 degrees F here and in London on Thursday, again... No surprise the wildfires have tore through residential areas again like in 2022, given how dry it is and the 38C / 100F temps. Quite a few houses destroyed. Wales is getting absolutely battered as well with homes destroyed there in multiple villages over the past 2 days. I just saw this image get posted from one of the fires in Wales forcing evacuations tonight...

@Handson777 welcome to Palmtalk! As Tracy said, a sago (Cycas Revoluta) won't damage a house's foundation. The roots are fairly small and not aggressive. Around here they are planted right next to houses, driveways and sidewalks, and the only issue is really frond clearance and (sometimes) a bunch of pups around the base being annoying. They do transplant easy. If you want it somewhere else I'd wait until fall to move it. I've moved 7 of them to my yard from various places, all of them with a couple of feet of trunk.

Looks great. The needles do fine in full sun in Oregon and grow faster. They do fine in shade as well and have a nicer look but it really slows them down. The Butias down here are typically blue with many more towards silver. I’m not sure if it has to do with the intense sun. I have three and purposefully planted one that looked more green and it seems to be holding it color. The blue ones color has been intensifying as they get larger. I think all those hybrid Trachys in the UK are really nice. Vic is able to ship seeds to the US so it might be a good idea to grab some while they’re available and fresh.

Miltonia regnellii var alba has adjusted to its new home in my garden. It's previous host, a guava tree, was extracted last Spring.

The good old excelsia, it’s been around a long time. Somewhat problematic after a few years in the garden. My solution to this problem is I cut them right back to just one stem and it sorts them right out real fast. Just one single stem will even have the most die hard palm nut asking what variety of licuala is that. It not only contains a problem child in the garden, you also get an interesting look about the garden.

Wodhyethia has become a victim of its own success. Imagine if it was discovered today - a large, landscape suitable palm with a crownshaft, self cleaning and large very full and plumose fronds. You can understand the attraction beyond the palm enthusiast community. I have friends and family that go up to the tropics and subtropics and have showed me photos of Foxtail palms being wowed by them and asking what they are. Objectively they are a beautiful species when well grown and they are adaptable to a range of soil conditions and even some warm temperate regions. I’m right on the limit of where they will grow and there’s less than a handful of long term survivors that I know of (none look good), yet it doesn’t stop them being sold in the 1000s here and people still lap them up.

These gutters just got installed in May. I discovered the problem when the black ooze ate through my gutter. In the corners there are pools of dead June Bug sludge. There are easily 100+ dead. I have no idea what caused this. There’s a lot of mulch in my yard. The roofer was totally baffled. I feel like the decomposition caused acids that ate through the aluminum? The roofer wondered if they were attracted to the type of caulking.

Seems like the colder temps have gone, for now. Getting mid-low teen max again and overnight temps closer to 10C than 0c. From looking at the garden in recent days, no palms are showing any apparent damage. Even the Archontophoenix purpurea, which admittedly is planted in a protected position seems to have not noticed. Some Meryta sinclairii leaves got burnt by a couple of frosts last week, but this will grow out very quickly. The mexicola grande avocado, which is in an exposed position seemed fine, even with some young leaves. @cbmnz despite some damage, it reads like your plantings are getting more resilient with a few more years in the ground. Bring on spring!

Cattleya lueddemanniana coerulea, Cattleya lueddemanniana ('Maria Cecilia' x 'Mariauxi'). I read that this species usually does not flower on its second annual growth for the season. It it must’ve been real happy with the hot, humid weather over the past weeks. NYT wrote that the humidity levels on the eastern seaboard were about the same as the Amazon rainforest last week. A real homecoming for the species.

Causiarum update, it got bigger after milton A year and a month later ... My Causiarum marches on adding height and the crown is at least 3/4ths recovered. How tall is it now? I really don't know, its too tall for an accurate guess, 35' to 40' maybe. The wide angle lens might be making it look smaller, LOL! In person it a beast! Beccariophoenix ALfredii has recovered nicely too. cant get ground to tip of tallest leaf so I just shot 3-4' to the tallest leaf. 8-9' of clean trunk
