    Germinating palm tree seeds

Well actually I grow a lot of palms from seeds as it happens, and I mean a lot of seeds. The archontophoenix is an easy palm to propagate so much so there a weed in my garden and many other gardens. Just keep your seeds in a warm place, put a plastic bag over them to create humidity and iam quite confident you will have archontophoenix to grow! And all fails PM me and I will see what I can do about getting some seeds to you, good luck!
  3. So just before the recent hard freeze (we took 24 degrees for two consecutive nights) the first flowering and seeds from my Archotophoenix Alexandre (the King!) turned ripe! I grabbed as many as I could and again, a few more, as I knew the freeze was imminent. We wrapped the King as best we could (He's getting almost too big to wrap) and was able to incude a heat lamp pointed to its heart. The look of the tree, as well as three others I grew from seed (Archontophoenix Maxima or as I call them, the baby Alexes), is utter desiccation - dead fronds, all. But it's as yet unclear as to whether any of these trees will survive...but their hearts look,,,dare I say it? They do look ok. Time will tell. So I got a setup, a rolling cart with grow lights and I planted these palm tree seeds. Some I soaked, scraped, and put into a community pot. Others I dried, then soaked and scraped and planted. Others I soaked and scraped, then let them dry out for several days, then planted them later. Could have had more, but I managed to ruin a bagful of them, ugh. But anyway, the seeds are starting to sprout. It's very exciting! I have them on a warming mat, then under the lights for several hours a day. So if I do lose any of my trees it's possible I could replace it from one of these being grown from seed. Otherwise: no more 'out of zone' planting of any kind. It's too hard to nuture something and watch it thrive for several years only to have it killed in a random freeze. It hurts my heart. I will know soon whether or not my existing tree survive. Does anyone else grow palms from seed and what advice would you have for me?

  5. This kinda crosses every subthread on here so I'm gonna put it here. It's fake spring. Yeah it was 83 degrees today but, at least here in the South, there's always that one last cold front in late March or early April and I just don't have the energy to drag everything out and back in, totes or not. If you've paid any attention to my thread or my socials, I've gotten more into tropicals - bananas, colocasia, alocasia - I've got so much stuff to split up and pot up but I have just about filled this room. These aren't going into solo cups or liners, I can chop some into multiple 1g bags for farmers market sales or whatever, but I've got lots of 5g to fill and I don't know where the hell to put them for the next few weeks. I really wanna have everything ready when Real Spring gets here, or as ready as possible. I think I'm in over my head and I need someone to talk me off the ledge. Even the shelving wouldn't help me much, I have multiples with pups and I can leave them as is and sell them for more or I can cut them up. And there's another deal that's just too good to pass up. I've got room in the bedroom for small stuff but I don't want to risk bringing the spider mites in here. And I've still got philodendrons to prop. Whoever said that if you love what you're doing, you'll never work a day in your life was full of.... Well this is a family site so I'll say feces. I'll be fine in a few weeks but right now, yikes. We're gonna add this to the long list of rookie mistakes John has made.
  6. I can't believe this album is 40 years old. Sirius XM has been playing tracks from it all day on channel 42 and despite taking my meds I'm entirely too hyped up right now to relax. Such an amazing album. I've talked a lot of smack after how they changed after the Black album but just to think this metal masterpiece is 40 years old is kinda throwing me off. I'm definitely overdue for a prostate check and colon screening, but damn. Damage Inc just goes so hard, the whole album from start to finish is just amazing.
  7. I pass those all the time. Havnt in awhile though.

    Hyphaene coriacea

In my experience these are easy to germinate. I had 100% rate, but I only had 3 seeds (that I got for free). They do need deep containers.

    Hyphaene coriacea

Cheers mate, going to direct sow when I pull my finger out, they came on quicker and more successful than I anticipated
  11. They are slow in the first place, cool soil won’t help much either. Try a rock mulch for a bit of thermal mass! Richard

    Hyphaene coriacea

Jonathan, cooler as in cooler than where the species is know to naturally occur is what I was suggesting, the wet and cool will be the test for them. thanks for the link man👍 these puppies are all being direct sown. I needed time to prepare the spots they sat in a bowl of coco peat following initial germination and now in they go. They’ll be in the ground soon to get those roots down deep!! This spiralling is pretty consistent it’s the Hyphaene
  13. I think it’s about 4 years old, they grow fast. It’s a Ghiesbreghtiana.

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

Yours is absolutely stunning. How many years has it been in ground? And what size was it when you planted? Are you in FL?

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

The nursery is about 75 miles away. They don’t plant in my area. Im having my gardener/landscaper plant it. I can ask them if it’s recently been planted in the box. I will ask about guarantees. But I doubt they will since they’re only delivering. Im gonna have the guys follow what AI suggests for planting.

  21. Thanks again, iam pretty aware of chemicals as i work on farm and always wear my PPE. But who would have thought the pollen was a danger, seeds yes but pollen!

    Trying coconuts again in Jacksonville!

    Thank you
  23. I wouldn't personally be worried about the scent of the male cones causing any health issues. It is more when you are in an enclosed space or handling a cone that is actively shedding pollen. It is a personal judgement call though. I mix the pollen with water to apply it to female cones so I am not dealing with flying aerosol pollen.

    Kentia dying

@happypalms sent me some seeds that are marinating at room temperature and I hope they sprout and the plants actually live this time. I've bought 12, I killed 11. The last one I gave to an employee and her sister decided that all the plants in their house needed haircuts. So technically*I* didn't kill that one.
  26. Does it ever produce viable seeds? Very interested in cold hardy palms that can make it in z8a/b in South Alabama
  27. It’s about 4 years old, I got from the great germinater Merc psillakis. So he must have had it for about a year. They do like warm temperatures I get about 2 too 3 leaves a season, but definitely slow as a seedling. Most likely you’re palm went into sulk mode after planting it’s a natural thing for a lot of newly planted palms, they lose a lot of lower leaves and they get a bit tatty looking sometimes with only one leaf and a spear. Hears a couple of satakentia that went into sulk mode after planting they are on the road to recovery now, planted about 6 months ago. Richard
