  2. Just under a week later, mini update Joeys doing not bad but one clearly doing more not bad than the others. One seed started to get some funk where the seed has been damaged, couple of treatments of h2o2 and they all seem fine. The one kerriodoxa ejected its embryo RIP 🪦. Butiagrus one and two and B.lallemantii doing well, with the first butiagrus looking like it's ready to send up a plumule.

    Which Pritchadia is this?

Hi Tim, I will take a picture in the morning, I will also compare it with a remota. It has seeded at a height much shorter than hildebrandii i have seen before

    Which Pritchadia is this?

Agree Colin definitely not lowreyana, can rule it out based on the small fruits. Here’s what I’m seeing: - small spherical fruits - abaxial surface of fronds either not or incompletely covered in lepidia - abaxial folds covered in a cottony layer - inflorescence divided to 3 orders - glabrous rachillae - infructescences shorter than petioles - fronds about 180 degrees or more spread from petiole. I think that leaves P hillebrandii, P glabrata and P remota as the likely candidates. I wouldn’t rule out P wailealeana either as I think it can have a small amount of cottony covering sometimes and I see the immature fruits are longer than wide. Got any photos of the overall palm Colin? I think having a look at whether the leaflets droop at the tips and the overall size of the palm would help narrow down further. It’s hard to tell, but I think I might see scattered lepidoa on the abaxial fronds surface too which would rule out hillebrandii but not sure.

    Lanonia dasyantha large form seedings

Not that slow, but I haven’t grown hardy MAPU before only dasyanthas. And they are quite fast growing varieties.

    Dwarf dypsis lutescens

I was given four of them, and planted two of them in my garden. You can see the elegance in the Thai variety!

When you get to the Canary Islands plant as many as you can you won’t regret it, go to town and plant joeys like I have so far a dozen good well established seedlings. And I have more than enough joeys and Kerriodoxas to see me out planting them!

    Which Pritchadia is this?

This Pritchardia was obtained as Lowreyana but as you can see it is not that species. Any advice is appreciated

    Oraniopsis appendiculata flowering

That’s great Colin what a milestone! Looks like it’s not too large either; I assumed these would take many decades to get to mature size but this bodes well that plenty of others in cultivation may be approaching flowering size. I can’t say I’ve seen a flowering Oraniopsis in person but I’m guessing it’s a male? Hopefully we’ve got some potential mother plants around to accept the pollen. If not, maybe throw some on a Ceroxylon or Ravenea (controversial topic around here 🫤)

    Livistona australis

The issue is the trunk is like compressed grass which blunts the saws. If you have tried to chop one down you will know it takes an effort. My local tree loppers use old chain saw blades, sharpen them after use. Landcare asked me if i could find some for them, it took me a little while, 500 found for them. There are some more out there Regards Colin

My not so fresh seeds from RPS didn't do so good. I'll wait till they get some new ones. Now the Joeys on the other hand...😁 Limited to indoor cultivation for these of course, but I'll get my big slice of land in the Canary Islands in a few years🏝️

    Cycad cones and flushes

I would say a slice is cleaner than a pry. Every situation is a little different. The cleaner and smaller surface area you can disturb the better. I’ve seen guys use all sorts of different sealants/fingicides. Even quickrete…

Why are sabals not popular in California

eehhh, lol .. i don't know about " good ".. Good enough / ok? ..that sounds more fitting.. Have ..several.. in the street island outside the living room window and ..if a storm, or the city deciding it's time to yank em' happens? i'll celebrate. Shorter, fatter filifera across another street and in some other yards in our neighborhood over the backyard wall are a much nicer look than the Mex fans.. All that said, You know monsoon season is close when they all get their annual, pre- monsoon season haircuts.

For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

Posting here because Mississippi doesn't really deserve its own topic, but we just had the 3rd warmest and 11th driest March on record, dozens of counties are considered disaster areas, and my county is almost 4" shy of our average. Wonderful time for me to start planting out super tropical stuff. The only stuff that's growing are thistle weeds. Clarke County is not on the disaster list but all the surrounding counties are.

Ice Cream Banana What To Do

It's amazing, and I love buying from them directly. They do freebie plants every week. Shipping and customer service is amazing. They have a liquid version in the same ratio but lower dose. I give mine 1/2 strength and even only getting 450ppfd of light all winter they turned into monsters. I've also fed it to colocasia and papayas and I notice a huge difference in a week. I've got some 20/10/20 for those now but I swear by this stuff for my bananas. I've got.some stragglers but tbf when I got those from @5am they had no roots at all. I'm not arguing but feel free to peek at my YouTube and instagram - it's legit. @sanchosgreenpaws for both. It's also really funny how much smaller plants look without an 8 foot ceiling above them.

Why are sabals not popular in California

Exactly, robustas are good skyline palms. If you’re a land developer and you plant rows of robustas, in 20 years you’ll have a beautiful skyline with 40-50 ft palms. But that does very little for the personal garden. Its more of a macro aesthetic for the overall area.
