I offer four plants, grown from RPS seed. I ship via USPS Priority Mail with tracking anywhere in the 48 contiguous US states. The price is $35 plus $17 shipping, payable by PayPal. PM me for my PayPal address. The pot size is 4x4x6 inches and the palms need to be moved up a pot size, or better, ground planted. I have let them get a bit too large for my standard shipping box, 4x4x24 inches. Therefore the tallest frond and/or spear may be bent in the box. This will not affect future growth. Subject of what to do about lower leafs on a Jubaea Palm that is browning up or dead but won't fall off has been discussed many times. But recently I have realized after doing a little experimentation, that it is best to leave a dead leaf on the trunk until if falls off on its own. If a dead leaf is cut leaving a stub behind, the stub will persist for very long time often many years. But if the dead leaf its allowed to remain it will fall off much sooner than if cut to stub. Reason for this is the dead leaf is constantly pulling away from the trunk from gravity much more so than a cut stub, allowing for the attached fibers to break one by one until there is nothing holding the leaf to the trunk. Forcing a leaf or stub away from the trunk should never be done, because it increases the chance of infection entering the wound. The Jubaea prepares in advance of a natural leaf breaking away from the trunk by retreating living tissues in the scar area so that when the leaf suddenly breaks away the wound it is already mostly healed and ready to harden off. The same principle probably applies to many other Palm Species with normally smooth trunks. Climate, health and other factors do influence whether a leaf will break away from its trunk cleanly but trying to force a leaf or stub off the trunk is risky to the health of the palm.

I thought they were quite fast to germinate, it took about 2 months for them to pop. I was surprised actually at how fast they germinated!

Awesome Richard. I got some from Colin as well. Mine haven’t germinated yet. How long did yours take to wake up? I just noticed the date 02/02/26. Mine went down on 24/02/26 but I haven’t used a heat mat. I’ve had them in the heater room where the temp fluctuates between 22C and 28,30C. I hope they eventually come up with my gentle gentle fluctuating temp approach.

@BobFL Sad news on the Adonidia merrillii, but we all expect to lose a few of these every so often. A potential palm replacement would be Allagoptera arenaria (Seashore Palm). You'll get a pinnate palm that doesn't dominate the house, clumps, is more cold-tolerant and salt-tolerant, and produces an infructescence that looks like a pineapple. Others may suggest something different, but that would be my top pick for your location. We may have a few at the fall meeting in Orlando and probably a few at the holiday meeting in Vero/Earring Point.

I run into the same thing. Only a few years ago, I could handle working outside all day in this. Nowadays, not so much. My washer and dryer stay busy keeping me stocked without clothes to do yard work. The photos of the yard look impressive. You'd almost think we weren't in a drought. The gardens should peak in about 3-4 months - just in time for the CFPACS Fall Meeting.

The windmill palm is around 15 yo, rather tall, It's been moved a year ago and last winter we had frost in UK. Some roots broken/damaged during the excavation from previous owners. Tree was OK and green for a few months. No fruits this year. New spears are sturdy but yellowy with no development. Looks like the palm stopped from growing and slowly dying. Most fronds bent half way, yellowy and dried towards the end. Watering on a regular basis since I got it last summer and using Palm focus as fertilizer since the issue. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Just picked up 2"+ at the garden in Katy 🤩. That'll keep things wet for another 10-12 days at least, plus looks like there is more to come. I did end up going to Katy Thurs evening to water the sensitive rainforest stuff. The ground was still moist so probably wasn't quite necessary yet (and of course it rained 0.3" the next day). So the tally for hand watering this year starts at 1. Hopefully not more than a handful in total!

I most certainly did save them with a gentle relocation program. I got my eye on a few more spots that need renovation, and I get to use the machine to dig up more rocks for those projects 😁 Richard

Absolutely no idea why, I have a friend and she cuts a leaf of a palm and leaves the petiole on, she must think that it will grow new leaves like a tree branch. I continually tell her that it’s incorrect but she keeps on doing it, the same with my neighbour cutting half of the good leaves off any palm he sees. Even in my job in the fruit industry I see new workers coming in too prune the trees and they leave 3 inch stubs cutting incorrectly when they should be close to flush cuts at a set angle, I tell them wait until a few years time and you have this mass of hard wood with stubs all over it that’s impossible to prune of, not only is it incorrect but also dangerous for the pickers poking eyes and catching your hands causing bleeding. Some people have no concept of how to work with plants when they think they know how. I gave up in the end wasting my time telling them, and I certainly didn’t like getting their row of trees next pruning season making my job harder while they pruned the trees I did last season wrecking all my good work! That’s beautiful but what kind of palm is that?

They seem to grow faster the more water you give them, but get pretty top heavy with the huge leaves. I would recommend giving it some support for a while once it starts getting tall, and especially once it starts branching, mine got blown over a couple of times.

Don’t mean to hijack Jim’s thread but: Thanks for the recommendation @PlantMorePalms , I just bought one and will replace our Sphaeropteris medullaris with it. The fern started off like gangbusters but has really declined in its mostly sun location. The T. grandifolia will provide needed canopy for our Geonoma undata, Ravenea hildebrandtii, Lepidorrhachis and a couple of vireyas.

It’s beautiful, my friend. Make sure you have a good growing medium: humus, pine bark, peat moss, and perlite, plus fertilizer. Mix all of that with leaf mold. That way, you’ll have great-looking palms.

Morning Sat. Check: Some isolated storms passing just to the south late last night, after a pretty good duster around 9PM. Today's Spinny, mesocale -level thingy, spinnin' squarely over coastal San Diego County = the left overs of another big night for storms across N. Sonora / borderlands of AZ. Sprinkle or two under all that cloudiness stretched out across the rest of CA atm.. Upper level flow over AZ = Better east to west flow across the state than yesterday ..which should help get storms into the valley, rather than steering them more toward the southwest.. Some bulidups starting to fire over the White Mtns / across S. NM already as well.. Whether or not they result in a nice soaking in one's back yard or not, dead center under the " slight " risk category today, = today's storm prospects look decent.. ..W/ Wind and duster day #2 likely being the biggest hazard. Don't count out the rain though.. More than enough moisture in the air for some dumpers, ..if your house, neighborhood, ...or section of the valley lucks out. -Fingers -Crossed.
