What level of membership is required to gain access to the archived journals?
Cindy Adair replied to Austinpalm's topic in IPS GENERAL DISCUSSIONSThank you for being a supporter member Austinpalm! My apologies for your difficulty. The short answer is I don’t know. The longer answer is I will try to find out. I do know that the IPS is transitioning to a new website to better handle membership and that there is discussion as to whether PalmTalk itself or the new website or even another location that stores other journals will be the best home for our scanned collection. I haven’t tried to access the journals online recently since I was very fortunate to be gifted an entire set from a PT user several years ago. -

Dypsis decaryi
Hu Palmeras replied to Hu Palmeras's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThat's right, folks. It's a dense substrate that drains well, but doesn't become waterlogged. You'll have palm trees until you're gone. -
TEXAS 2026
Xenon replied to Chester B's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATERoaring humidity today...check out these peak heat index and dewpoints; mid 80s (SE Houston) is quite exceptional even for the Bayou City especially in June. Waaaay higher than anywhere in Florida today ! And many foreign visitors still think this area is something arid-ish a la western movie 😝 Even Hobby is holding an 80F dewpoint at 4pm -
Coccothrinax borhidiana
Jim in Los Altos replied to aztropic's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI have a hybrid borhidiana here in much cooler Bay Area and it’s growing at a reasonable rate. Cute little palm. Yours is awesome! - Today

Anyone ever seen this before? Windmill Palm...
Las Palmas Norte replied to Zone7Bpalmguy's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSI've had this happen several times over almost 45 years of Trachycarpus seedling growth. Every one of the doinkers died. They stopped growing not long after exhibiting this phenomenon and then began to decline inexplicably. -
Dypsis decaryi
kinzyjr replied to Hu Palmeras's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThey grow pretty well here, at least between record cold fronts. A few of mine made it through. I've started seedlings in cups full of Hydroballs ( 1/4" expanded clay ). -

Phoenikakias replied to Hu Palmeras's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEOr very free draining medium, such as pumice, leca, lava and pine bark. If I knew already it many years ago, I would be having now a nice trunking specimen.- Dypsis decaryi
RichardHemsley replied to Hu Palmeras's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEAgree, I lost one due to over watering. They certainly like it a bit on the dry side.BJAX joined the community- Coccothrinax borhidiana
aztropic replied to aztropic's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEA faster growing option with similar looks, is a hybrid with a borhidiana parent. Not quite as hairy, but way faster growing and just as hardy. This compact species fits in well with today's smaller gardens. aztropic Mesa, Arizona- Coccothrinax borhidiana
aztropic posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThis species of Coccothrinax, native to a small beach in N. Cuba, is definitely one of my favorites. Similar in looks to the old man palm, (Coccothrinax crinita) but apparently much hardier. Great palm to grow in the desert, even in full blasting sun. Unfortunately, like many others in the genus, it is a rather slow grower. 5 gallon pot grown from seed in Arizona is already 10 years old! 🤯 aztropic Mesa, Arizona- Cycad cones and flushes
Brian replied to Urban Rainforest's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsHey Dale, ya one would expect more leaves on the flush. I counted 11 leaves so far. Maybe it flushes fewer leaves due to the mass of each leaf? As a comparison, I took photos of a mature Encephalartos lehmannii leaf and the Encephalartos ituriensis leaf next to it. The difference in mass is significant.MattCH joined the community- May-June 2026 International Palm Society Newsletter – The Palm Hero Award & Vietnam Part Two

MarcusH replied to MarcusH's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSI agree with you that the palm is planted too close to the house. Seems to be a common mistake among palm growers. One thing I don't agree with is fronds touching the house. Some palm fronds are very long and I doubt everyone owns a big property, also nothing gets harmed or damaged to the house or the palm tree.- Raffia Palm Seeds
SubTropicRay replied to Fer's topic in For SaleI would try some and use others for decoration.- For some, Florida drought is getting very "extreme"

pj_orlando_z9b replied to idontknowhatnametuse's topic in FREEZE DAMAGE DATAWould be interested to see any progress. Once the consistent summer weather hit in June (high dewpoints and overnight lows, rain), I'm seeing rapid recovery. My soil temps by my coconut hit has been 84F-87F. My plumeria left for dead just sprouted from the base.- I don't think a "murder hornet", but what is it?
Butch posted a topic in OHANA NUI - OFF TOPIC SUB-FORUMI found this in my pool in La Mirada SO. CA.... At 1st I was thinking murder hornet, but after checking on line, I don't think so... It was about 1-1/2' to 2" long... Not an elm saw fly, or a cicada killer wasp, bumble bee or carpenter bee... I have more pics if that would help identify it... Probably something simple that I'm missing.. Butch - Jubea Ch
