snow day

Hello all! I almost never post, but I have been gowing palms all my life, have been a long time reader of PalmTalk , and have learned much of what I know about palms through this site! I wanted to share with you an interesting event that happened to me today: snow! I was raised in South Florida, but currently attend school in Atlanta, GA, so this is a first for me. Since moving here, I have been surprised at the extent to which subtropical gardening is possible, even in a less than ideal climate. Attached are some pictures of my only outdoor palm, Rhapidophyllum hystrix. While snow and today's temps (28F) are par for the course with this species, I am happy to…

Pindo questions:)

Alright, going out on a limb (frond?) here:) I am planning on planting two pindos in my yard this spring, despite being told it can't be done in zone 6b...However, for winter, I do plan to construct a small, temporary, sturdy greenhouse from PVC pipe and plastic and place lights on a thermocube inside. I plan to do this for all my palms, even the Trachy and S. Minors...Anyway, I was wondering, where can one buy a pindo palm? I'm wanting one with a small amount of trunk. Also, how many years do they take to fruit? How tall are they usually before they begin fruiting? I can drive to Dallas if need be. I've heard others mention the Dallas Farmer's Market, but I was wonderin…

I stopped in at Alligator Alley and bought two Sabal minor McCurtain...the fronds haven't opened yet, but I imagine they will soon!! Here's some pictures... Also, my cat has been peeing in my Trachy's pot...so the cat will remain outside...but what should I do for the plant? Will this kill my palm??

Best palm for hot summers, cold winters?
by jfrye01@live.com- 6 replies
- 1.1k views
I am wondering what the best trunking palm would be for my zone 6b climate...Temperatures are often in the 90s to 100s through July, August, and part of September, and we can go up to a month between rains. Winter tends to be cold, with temperatures in the 20s-30s, dropping to the teens and single digits, and rarely, probably two to three times a winter, the negatives...I was wondering what the best trunking palm for the west side of my brick house would be...keep in mind the west faces the hot afternoon sun in summer, yet in winter, this tends to be somewhat of a microclimate.

My mule looks a bit yellow.

I finally replaced my mule that was destroyed by my local squirrels. The thing is, it is a bit yellow and I'm somewhat concerned about it. It came in the mail like this and I don't want to take any chances on keeping a sick palm or transferring disease to other palms in my garden. Can anyone please give me a diagnosis if any? I appreciate it. Also here is my washy after the cold.... What is the grey on the petioles? Thanks again.

by jfrye01@live.com- 12 replies

I was wondering the feasibility of growing a pindo in zone 6b...obviously, I would heavily protect with a temporary mini greenhouse in winter...would it be possible to grow this palm? Also, is there anywhere in north Texas I could buy one? I live near Wichita, Kansas and am willing to drive 7-8 hours to buy one if need be...crazy, I know:) Thanks in advance!

Zone 6b advice needed
by jfrye01@live.com- 9 replies
- 1.4k views
Hello all. I am new to the forums here and I am glad to find a community of other palm enthusiasts;) I live outside Wichita, Kansas, in zone 6B, but very close to the line with zone 7A. I bought a Trachy that is about four feet tall (pictured below, currently awaiting planting). I am also wanting to experiment with some Sabal minor and maybe a Pindo. I am wondering if anybody could give me some tips on keeping the Trachy alive. My house is in the northeast corner of a field, with a windbreak of trees on the north and a wooded area to the east. There is about 100 feet between the house and these trees on the north and east. Winters in our area are often cold, and it i…

The Great British Garden Revival.

Here a link to a series of very good documentarys about gardening in the UK. And this video is about exotic gardening. Well England still is number one when it comes about gardening I guess. Well at least for people in cooler parts of the World like me. And full of inspiration. Making an exotic garden in Florida or California is dead easy. But N.W. Europe is a bit differend... www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p01p7y1n Alexander

speed of Brahea Clara

when I lived in Arizona I had some nice trunking Brahea Armatas, gorgeous palms. I brought one 5 gallon with me when I moved to florida, but it just didnt like the climate in gulf coast florida and it died after getting a mold infection. I read on palm talk that brahea clara was also blue but could take the humid climate of florida, even flourishing here. So I went and bought two 1 gallon seedlings from Tejas Tropicals identified "icy blue brahea clara". I know that some dispute that clara is even a separate species, but my experience is that they are very adapted to florida and also much faster growers than armata. Of my two, the yard guys ran over one just after plantin…

Death toll

Hmmm, a chunk of the experiments I planted are now dead, and it's not even January. Not to mention we've had some spectacular weather, with ample 70's and 80's. My upper hillside had two nights of 31F, that's it. Despite the mild Winter, the death toll continues to rise. These are all victims of high chill and cold soil. The hillside is also in mostly shade in the Winter, so tends to remain colder. None of these failures are surprises, but it was worth it to try. - dypsis lastelliana highland form, Len warned me, this is borderline in Socal, not even close up here. - dypsis orange crush, I hear out of hundreds of plantings in Socal, only a few specimens are know…

Palm Book

I've been very impressed with the book Cold Hardy Palms by Alan W Meerow. I have found the information very helpful with lots of examples of cold hardy palms. Much better than the coffee table type palm books you see floating around this one has specific information about nutritional needs, propagating seed, disease problems and much much more. It is obviously well researched and I recommend it to my cold hardy friends out there.

Building Garden Rooms to increase your Zone
by Alicehunter2000- 21 replies

How many people have put, or thought about putting, a fenced-in area within their larger yard area to specifically create a micro-climate? I was thinking that if you could build a solid fenced-in area about 6-10 ft. tall and sealed up near the ground with a berm of soil, you could create something that might increase temps 5 degrees or so.....maybe even have a firepit in the middle to add extra warmth on the coldest nights.........dumb idea? Anybody got something like this?....pictures?

Preparing for next week!
by GA Palm Guy- 3 replies

Looks like I'm going to get hit by some cold weather next week. Sunday 53/26 Monday 33/13 Tuesday 29/19 Wednesday 41/29 Thursday 46/35 It wouldn't be so bad if we hadn't already had so much rain. I had one Butia spear pull already last week out of the 3 that I have. My Washingtonia Robusta has allot of damage on lower fronds but top growth looks fine. Anyone else getting a cold shock next week?
