Spring Trimming in the Cold
by _Keith- 18 replies

Not sure the high hit 50 today, and low tonight will be 32, but I had an awesome day of spring cleaning in the gardens. Here is one of renewed scenes. The 3 Phoenix sylvestris palms, only two visible in photo with one just off to the right, got some big hair cuts today. Our little statue named Jasmine WABOHH is now visible again for the first time in several years. And she is sporting a new gazing ball as well, the last one was nailed in Hurricane whatever it was last year or two. I don't even keep track any more. Now I can get under them to clean up and mulch. It was brisk out there l, especially when the wind blew and sun tucked behind a cloud, but heavenly as well. …

B. afredii Zone 9a Hardy? 1 2 3 4

Yes, this year I was blessed with gifts. I guess the powers above knew this was my tightest garden budget year ever and blessed me. Well, if we have a mild winter they have blessed me, if not I shall be forgiveness from the gift bearers. This is one of the 4 B. alfredii quite happy and pushing a new front. You can see another of the 4 in the background. All are pushing a new frond, so I guess they are happy in their new environment.

Mule ID (Mercer Gardens In Houston)
by meteorologistpalmguy- 22 replies
- 3.2k views
So at the local arboretum (Mercer) here in Houston, amidst the palm gardens they have what is very clearly a mature mule palm. Given the diameter of the trunk (at least two feet wide), and the heels left behind, I am assuming this is a Jubaea x Butia mule palm, but it is one of the very few trees not labelled within the garden. Now what is more interesting is I was able to snag a three germinating seeds below this tree before garden help was just about to "clean them up". I have been growing them in 1 gallon pots for the past year but have been very slow, but moving along. I am guessing they will likely be (JxB)xS given the number of Queens in the nearby vicinity, …

by palm789- 3 replies
- 1.3k views
Hi I bought a trachycarpus fortunei online and it came and i am happy with it but noticed only a few leaves are dead and some have brown tips so what is this from? What can fix this I cannot plant it as the soil in the garden it about 3 inch deep and I'm moving to a new property.that is a new pot I put it in from a plastic bag pot to a normal plastic pot with drainage temporary until I move.i checked it has roots covered in lots of soil, mud, hardy palms said it its been fertilized for a year.so about these leaves should I just cut off the dead ones from the fan or leave them on.i don't want to remove the stems.i don't know what to do help.

Is the Blue version of this palm a sub species? of Pindo or are they a crap shoot as far if they can turn blue or not. Did my searches here and in the web in general. Even read Phil's article about Pindos and no real explanation of why some are green and others blue.

Hi, I'm hoping for some advice about Copernicia prunifera and Livistona saribus for the upper TX coast. I'm in zone 9b with very hot summers and short, cold winters with an occasional freeze. They will be going to two locations, both are in full sun and one is exposed to winter salt spray and very high winds. I have no experience with either Thanks

I was doing some work in Spring Hill, TN (a small town about 45 minutes south of Nashville, TN) last week and walked around the corner of a bank building and saw this good-sized Needle Palm right in front of me. When I asked the ladies in the bank how long it had been there, one replied that it was planted when the building was built sometime around 1996-1997. Another cool thing is how visible it is. It is right on Main Street, in the downtown area of Spring Hill. There aren't many palms that have been in the ground for 18-19 years in Middle TN, so I thought that this was a pretty significant discovery! Other than maybe needing a little fertilizer, …

Hi Everybody, I am new to this forum, so to introduce myself, I built my house in the north west of France last year and I am now filling my garden with palms and other exotics. Last December I purchased that unidentified Sabal in a shop dedicated to sell inventory from shut down plant retailers. It supposedly came from Spain. I hope that the big Sabal knowers community from palmtalk will help me identifying my big baby!! Here it is right after I received it : Here it is now after a winter with almost no freeze but 3 big wind storms : Sabal x par ouaitetown, sur Flickr Thanks for your help

by Palm crazy- 59 replies

Here are some picture from the last three weeks, since it spring today I thought this would be a good time to showcase the garden before it gets to overgrown with exotics. In the little drought tolerant part of the garden I have decided to only have orange flowers so heres a few. Poppy are easy to grow and this one will reseed each fall. Semi Native succulent Lewsia… this one is a hybrid. Interesting barberry with unusual flower buds, flowers open to inside down daffodil like flower in bright yellow. Native current blooming for the hummingbirds.

fall planting?
by Briank- 4 replies

need some advice. This is my first year growing palms Spent all summer digging holes and planting palms. I have quite a few still needing to put in ground. In particular I have 2 15ga Bismarks. I live 5 miles from beach in heart of San Diego. Our weather in San Diego is pretty much ideal for planting year round I would think. We don't really have seasons. As next week we will have 4-5 days in mid 80's after this rain. Should I hold off planting any more palms for the year and wait till spring? I have about 20 palms growing on my patio, we never get frost were I live, never below 40 degrees. So I think I can leave out throughout fall n winter. I was thinking ab…

Hi i recieved my new palm trachycarpus fortunei and after i repot this new palm of mine,i was wondering if i keep it in the same pot will it hinder the growth of the palm? (i dont want to kill it or make the stems and fronds look unhealthy) and can i keep it at a certain height and or i have to change the pot every few years or can i keep it in the same pot forever. I am asking because when i had to repot my chamaerops humilis i could see the roots were desperate to get out of those plastic pots they come with. Please advise me as this has been on my mind.

Hey everyone, I have a question about this palm. I live in zone 8a. The recommended zone for this palm says 8b to 11. We have other palms in our area that say 8b as well and when it gets cold the leaves die but not the whole palm. I was just wondering what your thoughts on wether I would be able to grow a Bismarck palm in zone 8a? Thanks.

Trachycarpus fortunei in shade or not?
by palm789- 4 replies
- 2.3k views
Hi i have read somewhere in these forums that if i grow my trachycarpus fortunei in the shade they will stretch and look bigger? Is this true? has anyone got any evidence to show me this or pictures to compare both a normal grown one (half shade half sun and the one in full shade). I am curious but want to see which i prefer to do before i buy.

Canary island grow advice
by palm789- 13 replies

So i noticed my CiDP is still young from when i bought it back in june, and it does not have a trunk yet just the main petioles with the sharp leaves. Is there a way to speed up the growth either now or spring so i can get to see some more trunk and enhance its hardiness? Back in june i changed pot from the small original plastic pot to a ceremic pot 2 inch bigger (i read instructions about pot size). and i fed it once a week with miracle gro multi purpose feed and i also watered it when the top of soil was dry.but nothing has seemed to budge. Any advice?
