I just learned David McLean, A larger-tha-life figure in South Florida horticulturalist passed away on June, 4, 2014. I had the good fortune to meet up with David on many occasions & he was quite a character. He was a teacher, friend & all around self confessed plant nut. He will certainly be missed by those who had the opportunity to know him. Randy

Sad news today, one of the most popular of Southeast Queensland's palm nurserymen, and palm lover, Leo Gamble, has passed away. Our thoughts are with his family in this sad time. Leo and his wife Jeanne had one of the premier palm nurseries in Australia, selling and distributing many choice Madagascan and New Caledonian palms, along with many other species from around the world. Their display garden and nursery near Wappa Falls, was outstanding and contained many stunning specimens. Many photos of their garden have appeared on Palmtalk, and the garden will live on in our thoughts for many decades. I don't know what the future holds for Jeanne and the garden, but I know it…

Prominent Queensland horticulturist Colin Campbell has passed away quite suddenly after a short illness. Colin is well known for his articles in magazines and newspapers and for being the Queensland representitive on the ABC 'Gardening Australia' television programme.........He was an advocate for the tropical/subtropical gardening and also has had a number of plant cultivars named after him. He will be sadly missed from the Queensland and Australian horticulture scene.

I just got a call this morning from the son of Max Wurzel of the San Fernando valley. He called to say his dad had passed a few days back and he was going thru his phone book calling all his friend w/the news. Max lived to 95 and packed more adventure into those years than any 5 others I know. He was a gardener/groundskeeper by trade, but an Indiana Jones by nature. The day I first met him, he invited me over to see his garden- all things tropical, as you can only grow in that area and with 80+ yrs of experience. On Sat 12th of October 2013, Ken Adcock, one of the founding members of the Palm and Cycad Society of Western Australia passed away. Ken worked for a long time in the WA Agricultural department and his love of palms was shared by his close friend and work colleague Peter Skinner. Together they decided to start PACSOWA back in 80's. I always found Ken a very helpful and knowledgable individual who was very supportive of those interested in gardens, but especially palms and cycads. His passing comes as a huge shock and he will be greatly missed. The WA tropical plant growing scene will be much poorer due to his absence. Goodbye Ken.

My neighbor, and good friend, Bob Hastings has passed away today from old age. He will be missed. I have recently received the very sad news that our member Hugh Harries died on 7th February after a short illness. Hugh was passionate about coconuts and published widely, particularly on the origin and dispersal of Cocos nucifera. One of his most important papers is that in Botanical Reviews 44:265-319 (1978) but he also wrote several more light-hearted papers in Principes (now PALMS) such as "Darwin and the robber crab" and "Nuts to the garden of Eden" which, nevertheless have serious intent. We shall miss his sense of fun and his deep passion for his subject.

Very sad news from Maui this evening. Sunya's son, Paul, called me from Kahului, Maui, to inform me that Sunya passed away on January 7th, 2022. Sunya has been a dear friend for some 25 years, and was a driving force 20 years ago to get the small Maui Palm Society up and running and by sheer willpower she kept it running for many years. She would also often visit the Big Island when HIPS (Hawaii Island Palm Society) had a garden tour. HIPS also had a very memorable weekend (Friday-Sunday) outing to Oahu in 2002. Ray Baker, sadly no longer with us, was our very knowledgeable guide and we visited Foster, Lyon and Ho'omaluhia with about four HIPS members from the Big Island…

Sad to hear news of John's passing today. John, past IPS and PACSOA member and director, and husband of past IPS director Jeanne Price, had been ill for several years. He did a lot for the palm world, and was the long time editor of PACSOA's 'Palms and Cycads' magazine. My sincere condolences to Jeanne and family on this sad occasion.

John was an unassuming, quietly spoken, hard working man who I had the privilege of knowing for a while. Jimmy pasted away last night. It is a sad time for Parrotheads around the world! I have many great memories from the concerts over the years. Always a great party and event, not just a concert. Two most memorable concerts: Miami Marine Stadium in the late 90’s, we chartered a 40 ft sailboat for the concert, rafted up to over a thousand boats, Jimmy played from the barge, we took the dingy up to front of barge, you were front row!
