Lateral growth of palms
by mpiodi- 18 replies
- 3.9k views
I learnt that palms don’t show subsequent lateral growth like other trees. They develop first the final thickness (diameter) of their stem before they begin to grow vertically. I observe this phenomenon perfectly at my numerous Elais guineensis and others like Borassus, Phoenix, Livistona, Sabal etc. However, I have the impression that this rule is not valid for my Roystonea oleracea (first pic: in my yard) which begins already to grow in height though the stem is still very slim. And as I know what is to expect from a mature tree of this species (second pic: the tree where the seeds came from - Lake Victoria/Uganda), I am wondering whether my palm shows any anomaly. Or…

a couple tender palms in a good microclimate downtown Orlando
by Eric in Orlando- 10 replies
Downtown Orlando is a good warm microclimate. I was down at the Orange co. History Museum and saw these 2 tender palms. The Hyophorbe lagenicaulis had little damage after this winter. the Licuala grandis had more but it was growing a new spear in the center.

Here are a few pix of my red form Hyophorbe indica. I have never seen one of these in anyone's garden. I am planning on planting it real soon. Has anyone had any experiences with this palm in So Cal? I have read that it will eventually turn green. Nice color when young though.

Burrawang mana

Late palm planting today, grass and fish for the small pond, planted small cordylines in the Princess palm pond area, fixed the veggie fence, bought a chicken coop, planted marigolds to keep the bugs off the veggies. Let's go to the video tape. Planted Chambeyronia hookerii, Dypsis pembana, Dypsis leptocheilos and one sad looking Satakentia. This was one of those brown pembanas turned green. I placed him between two of his elders, this type of planting is known as "Pembana Pollution". The palms aren't as yellow as they appear in the pic, the flash has done them no favours, but yellow is setting in. Remember most of these were transplants so I expected a slow start. …

white spot on my majesty palm
by Meaghean- 1 reply
- 1.9k views
my majesty palm has recently developed two little white spots, on the fan. It isn't really the fan itself but on top of it, kind of like a secretion. Up untill just a week ago it was inside and only got indirect light, could that be the problem? Is this something I should be worried about?

IT'S a GIRL!!

About 4 years ago I planted 5 small T. wagnerianus in the front part of my garden, far enough away that they wouldn't be contaminated from the T. fortunei growing in the back. They have grown incredibly fast and 4 of them bloomed last year, all of them males. This year the 5th one bloomed and it's a female. I've already sprinkled pollen on the female flowers and hope to have a good crop of T. wag seeds this year. I've found that if crossed with T. fortunei all the resulting plants look like T. fortunei. T. wag is my favorite Trach, and they look very distinct and compact even as seedlings. Dick

Butia hybrid seeds
by Nigel- 2 replies
I have now produced butyagrus seeds from 3 different plants, they always smaller than normal. Is this true with all those Butia hybrid seeds out there. I produced a lot of Butia catarinensisxSyagrus rom santa and the seed was so small I thought oh my god these will never germinate, despite seemingly having embryos. Anyway, with lots of patience, even this incredibly hard to germinate seed is germinating well...... My biggest challenge now is keeping them alive , here in brasil where I thought growing things would be easy, poor substrate with limited choice, tapwater with a PH of 5,5 , and enormous quantities of rainfall have been somewhat challenging ,and if these …

Phoenix Reclinata sp.??
by mcwolf- 6 replies

Hi, sorry, for bringing up another Phoenix Reclinata thread. I never thought that I had to mention anything questionable about this common species in southern Africa. The more I looked at mine the less I could find similiarities to the overwhelming majority to the ones growing in my neighbourhood. There are 2 main differences. 1) The leaves are lime green and always been. With and without fertilizing. 2) The petioles are deep orange. Even new opening leaves show it and not only old and dried out leave bases which I find quite common. Does anyone know anything about this variation? BTW, I find it a very slow grower. Thanks for your help, Wolfe

Royal Crownshafts
by Kumar- 2 replies

Both my neighbour and I have two Roystonea regia specimens apiece, with his pair being twenty-five years senior to mine. I noticed today that the crownshaft of one of his specimens looked oddly bloated and offset quite a bit from the trunk. As a contrast I have put up a photo of my royal - which seems to be in the 'green' of health. I wonder whether perhaps such a bloated crownshaft is a sign of senescence? This is the peculiar crownshaft. And this is mine,

Phoenix loureiri or hybrid?
by Boleotom- 5 replies
- 1.1k views
Hi all. This is the first time for me in this forum. The palm in the pic is very beautiful, specially in full sun, with trunk size intermediate between reclinata and robeleni and it suckers. The relatively small size, elegance and shini leaves make it a almost perfect palm for small spaces. The pics were taken in Lisbon BG, the only place where I saw this palm. It is labeled as P. loureiri but in the EPS forum I was informed that it might be a Hybrid. It is much less agressive than P. reclinata, but stronger than robeleni. Unfortunatly it doesn´t produce seed. What do you think? Has anyone ever saw this palm before?

New palms at RSN

While at work today at Rancho Soledad, I saw a truck being unloaded with a Hawaii shipment. I was busy so I did not go through the whole shipment, but low and behold I was looking at a stunning 20 gallon size Pelagodoxa Henryana. Of course it won't grow in So Cal, but if any of you have a conservatory it would be a great specimen to have. There was also some large size Dypsis Scottiana, but I think they are actually some other Dypsis. Gary

Mosquito control in a palm garden 1 2

Palm growing is synonymous with mosquito infestations.. My shadehouse and front yard are overrun with mosquitoes... They threaten my well being. I want them to all die. Is there a spray? Maybe natural predators I can attract somehow (besides Gambusia affinis since I have no pond... yet )? How do you control mosquito populations in your palmy paradise?

Queen Bu Ju's Permanent Spot
by Jim in Los Altos- 1 reply
I've only had her for a day but I'm totally attached already. This whole hybrid thing is soooooo intriguing. With the mamma palm being a queen palm and the papa being a Butia X Jubea, the resulting adult palm will be stunning I'm sure. That's why this one gets a central spot in my front yard. The Kentia nearby will probably get pushed out of the way in the future but it has not flourished in this too sunny and hot location and a companion like queen bu ju may be welcome for its shade production.

My Raveneas
by PalmatierMeg- 25 replies

Last week I received 2 R. glauca and 1 R. hildebrandtii from George Sparkman/Cycads n Palms. I planted the R. glaucas in place of a Bentinckia nicobarica that succumbed to winter. Yesterday I planted the R. hildebrandtii in place of a Synechanthus and a Heterospathe minor that also croaked. I got to adding up the number of Raveneas I have and saw quite a selection. Last night I took photos. Ravenea rivularis - I have two majesties about the same age but one benefits from a/c runoff and grows larger. Ravenea xerophila - Last year I planted this palm in my cactus container garden where I hope it benefits from full sun and good drainage. Ravenea glauca - Af…

bulging crown on foxtail
by dp92651- 23 replies
- 3.2k views
Hello, Just a quick question on an observation. I have two foxtails in coastal southern california. Both palms were growing new spears quite rapidly then slowed, although they have both shed old leaves on the crown and appear to be bulging at the crown. Is there any reason for this or is it part of the growth process? The bulge is not large but it is not something I noticed at the nursery. Might just have been my oversight. Thanks.
