Century old Roystonea elata's

I have been watching the restoration of a former private estate here in the greater Ft. Lauderdale area. It was the home of the Richardson family, a renowned "pioneer" family of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. This home sat abandoned for many years, possibly in the hands of the court system. Finally, the city bought the property and turned it into a city park. I would imagine that these Royals are natural to the property. There is a small canal that runs just beyond the stand of palms, so as you can see, they are happy! It was a real pleasure to see that, for once, the local government was doing something right. The parking is free, the park itself is free, and the huge f…

ID if you please

I worked at the Tropical Vibe sale last weekend, and came home with this palm that had no label or sign. It was in the greenhouse, in a liner pot. My guess was Ptychosperma elegans, because it's flying solo. John couldn't narrow it down more than Ptychosperma species, but said he's also had Ptychococcus seedlings and couldn't rule that out either.

Most elegant Pritchardia?
by Kim- 38 replies

A good friend has asked me to recommend a fan palm for her garden. She is 1/2 block from the ocean, and the location will get a lot of sun -- or as much sun as you can get in Ocean Beach, California. Initially I was thinking Brahea calcarea aka nitida, but they are really slow growers. Having seen numerous photos of Pritchardia recently, they seem an inspired choice. I'm thinking lush green, large elegant fans. Which species? Experts? What do you recommend? Pritchardia or other? (NO WASHIES!)

I posted this palm before but we still did not ascertain waht it is. I have updated pictures - some of the newly opened leaf which I hope gives a better idea of what it mught be. My theory is that it was mislabelled. I am not going to mention what it was called when I bought it so as not to influence your guesses. This is the entire plant . It about 3 feet tall from leaf base to leaf tip.

Ravenea species study
by Caryota_gigas- 4 replies
In New Zealand, for a palm to be allowed into the country, it first has to be placed on the MAF list. This is a list of plants that have been checked out by an organisation to determine whether or not the plant is likely to be a bio-security risk, via disease, bugs, or invasiveness. I am currently looking at adding all the Ravenea species to this list. Below is a list of 17 species, what I would be interested in knowing is, are there many (any) new Ravenea species in the pipeline that are likely to be officially described soon (or have been done so recently). I need to be able to quote literature. albicans dransfieldii glauca hildebrantii julietiae krocia…

This tractor might be a little overkill for the job, but it got the palm into the truck. And no, that is not me standing by the tractor, just a nursery hand. If only I was that young again. Here it is planted where the two large Pines stood last week. The Palm is about 8 feet tall. I am wasting no time in getting this bed back together, now that the Pines are gone.

by freddyuk- 2 replies

I removed a pup from a plant we bought last spring and potted it up. i kept as much root as possible attached. The mature leaves browned and i cut them off. I have been left with a spike only which has not moved for some months now but it is still green inside so i assume life exists but should i just wait fro the plant to take off or is there something i need to do to get it going?

Seeing as it is nearly the end of the year, I thought it was time for a little fun. The New Zealand Palm and Cycad Society is running a little competition that anyone worldwide can enter. So if you would like to win a free subscription to our society with its quarterly colour magazine, just click here, and name the plants. Good Luck! P.S No-one has got more than 4 out of 12 correct yet, so surely you can do better than that right!

Ceroxylon interruptum
by Caryota_gigas- 5 replies

Here in NZ many people (including myself) have Ceroxylon interruptum growing. If you look it up, it is not an accepted name on Kews list. In the world checklist on Palms it lists Ceroxylon interruptum as now being Klopstockia interrupta. But Klopstockia are now all Ceroxylon, so when you look up Klopstockia interrupta, it say it is now "?" Has there been any advance on this species, does anyone know what it is now called?

Howdyall: OUt in the garden with my roving digicam, breaking in the new red shoes, when I noticed the spike, pic'd below, on my large Pritchardtia hillebrandtii, which is the sheath for a flower spike. (Cop a feel and that's clearly what it is. Not the hard solid spike of a leaf, but the covering for a flower.) Praise glory. There's two of them.

Varnished Phoenix? OVER THE TOP.
by TikiRick- 8 replies
- 6.8k views
A neighbor who is renovating their home decided to take out a small stand of Sabal palmettos (another story) and install two large Phoenix dactylifera (I believe). Going for that grand, estate look, and attempting to stay very formal, they had the trunks of the Phoenix varnished. At first, I thought that they were installing artificial Phoenix until I took a closer look. Is anyone familiar with this procedure? Is it done in California, Texas, or Arizona? Does it pose any threat to the palm?
