I think it’s time to call it done! The palm is alive and is pushing spears but they immediately desiccate before even fully opening. I have no idea why this is happening or what to do.

We got hit pretty hard by hurricane Lala With many trees down. I got very lucky that the only palm loss was a Kerriodoxa elegans that had the unfortunate fate to end up under a giant fallen Guatemalan cypress and one of my peach palms came down. The Kerriodoxa still has a spear so it will make it. I chainsawed the peach palm and will eat the heart of palm, but it’s already got suckers coming up so no problem there. We’ve had a number of hurricanes come by pretty close, but nothing was ever as bad as hurricane lala. I also learned that the damage seems to be consistent with winds coming down vertically from above as opposed to sideways, which is very weird. Several places had trees down in a 360° radius. I looked this up and it seems to be a thing with hurricanes. They’re called mini downbursts. I was pleasantly surprised by the amazing tolerance of Bismarck palms. But also very disappointed in beccariophoenix which sadly are pretty much all leaning sideways. I am going to leave them that way so they make that coconut style curve at the base. But talk about a weak palm none of them have trunks yet so perhaps they will root in better once they make a trunk. I figured the Big Island would be a pretty safe place from global warming, but clearly it’s not. The super El Niño is churning out storm after storm and Hawaiian waters are now warm enough for them to actually intensify close by. on Sunday, another tropical storm is passing by this time much further to the south.I guess you can pick your poison, either fire And drought or hurricanes. I also learned what a hurricane cut means. Most of our royal Palms are now sporting that hurricane cut. They have a very effective coping mechanism of just dropping lower leaves, which is not good for anything going under them, but they look fine. .

I'm in Kurtistown about 10 miles south of Hilo and at about 750 feet elevation. My report is about the same as Jason's above. No palm damage. Let's see if I can get a picture in here. If you look over the second to last paragraph in the SFGate article, there's a mention of Pink Rot being noted in some specimens back in the early 2000s. Further spread? / something else being introduced / spread around pathogen-wise could have been the so called " nail in the coffin " that lead to the ' total removal ' decision. Having watched these ..and most of the other palms installed in / around downtown S.J. go in back in the late 80s / 90s, the one thing i did not realize ..that was mentioned in a Reddit discussion about the removal... is that the specimens installed in the circle, are actually planted in large containers, placed atop an underground parking structure / underground utility maintenance / access space, thus, they're days were already numbered from the day they went in. Some mention on people being injured by falling fronds there in the reddit discussion as well. Regardless, as you mention, while it stinks to loose them, in this case at least, the decision wasn't a knee jerk from some " i hate palms " city council person / group of them. It was based on what they were seeing, and weighing that against both public safety ..which the city / county / state is responsible for, and general city- view aesthetics ..These days, i'm sure some council member's inbox would be filled with " What's with the half dead palms at the circle / etc.. " comments. Better to take the hit of loosing them now, instead of more significant problems later. While it would be nice to see them replaced w/ other palms ( Something other than Washingtonia, Queens, Med Fans, and/ or Phoenix, please..... ) limited space may limit replacement choice. Palm- wise? Mules ..and / or maybe some Brahea edulis might look neat though. Just don't plant anything dumb ..like trees from Asia, Europe, or the eastern U.S. ...And no AI projections of palms interspersed between techie s===== advertisements either.

I assume that the damage wss incrementally worse as one progresses further south. I haven't heard anything about Leilani Estates yet.

I used to work in a kentia palm nursery and one of the jobs was counting Howea fosteriana sprouts by the thousands to send to Holland. And out of those numbers we never saw one variegated Howea. But there out there, I have seen one other one, and that was on palm talk @tim_brissy_13 has a small one. But the day my one sets seeds it will be an interesting time that’s for sure. And I actually have another one so two in the garden. I purchased 40 fosteriana about 30 years ago from a friend and they where in that lot of palms, I didn’t even notice them at the time.

I have four young coconut trees. One has tangerine-yellow leaves, the second has light tangerine-yellow leaves, the third has bright green leaves, and the fourth has green leaves. I suspect that the tree with the tangerine-yellow leaves is a 'Red Spicata', but I am unable to identify the varieties of the other three based on their leaf colors alone. The second tree has light tangerine-yellow leaves, the third has bright green leaves, and the fourth has green leaves.

I did something similar sabal king of Texas mentioned piling sand around it and voila mine grew larger

They really didn’t have a choice. It’s pretty clear in the video that they are dead/dying. It’s not some overzealous city official making a harsh decision. I’m guessing that the crew used dirty equipment in the past to trim them and introduced some pathogen. At least they are testing them before just replanting.

Tiny is an understatement, complete and utter problem child in the garden. Iam ripping my ones out. Variegated or nothing for me in the rhapis department.

I was expecting that, pretty well much not a chance in the ground in my climate. And one cool greenhouse in the shade may get built for just such palms in the low area of my property. Crazy to think I would be going for a that sort of greenhouse, go for 90 percent shade cloth 😂 A container palm for those Southern growing Tasmaniacs and the Mexicans south of the border!

Be careful not to paint them all with the same brush. G undata subsp undata (G weberbaueri) will be very tricky in summer for you. Hates consistent heat. Will need the coolest, wettest spot to be a chance. Most Geonoma are very tropical and will love the heat as long as the moisture is kept up.

Chucking a few more seeds in, a little rps order of some healthy looking seeds. The socratea have started to germinate so that’s a positive sign. And I know the Geonoma live in my climate so I just need to germinate a few more for the collection.

Iam quite impressed with the tashiroi, coming out of winter looking like it was a spring festival. Not too worried about winter the least, pretty good for a seedling.

Back in the day they would have been snapped up. Here in Australia you can’t even give them away. That said if I was to go to the markets and sell my exotics, with a Joey next to a foxtail the foxy would sell not a problem. And the odds of taking the Joey home would be very high. The general public see the foxy and they think yep I want a palm and I see them around the place so the foxy it is , and the Joey comes home only to grow bigger for the next trip to the markets. They seem to prefer wet high humidity conditions, the cool conditions is a great bonus for growing them out of there habitat. It took me a couple of loses in growing them before I worked them out, the same with iguanura palms. I have managed to germinate a few Geonoma weberbauri from rps and it looks like iam having good luck so far with them popping up with more on the way.

Thanks for checking in after hurricane Lala. We had strong winds and 18.5” of rain but thankfully not too much damage. A limb on the monkey pod tree snapped and several palms had fronds torn off. A few small palms blew over but they’ve been propped back up and should be fine. Thankfully our area of the island did fairly well, it’s the southern part of the island that received a lot of flood damage.

I've tried saw Palmettos in the past and I could never get one to grow, but I decided to try again and this time I decided to create artificial drainage with drainage gravel, I replaced all native soil with sand and equal parts garden soil and then topped off with pure sand. And for the first time I have a saw palmetto that's actually growing and not rotting away. I've included the drainage I've created. It's a lot deeper than it looks in the image,the idea was to make water quickly drain away down Hill.

Phoenikakias: I ordered a few different palm species from that Germany-based supplier a few years ago and also didn't have any germination success... except for one (1) single seed of Dypsis (Chrysalidocarpus) onilahensis that sprouted. Too early to tell if it'll be the droopy or the upright leaf form.🤨
