sonoranfans replied to Cape Garrett's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEsix years later my smallest one, planted as a 3 gallon in 2010(?) It was defoliated to the spear in 28F plsu frost in dec 2010 so yeah a setback. It has seen 3 hurricanes the last 8 years but it is small palm in my yard of ~30 footers so not much damage. The tall ringed poles are two other C. Oliviformis I can get in the two closest taller ones with a 17mm wide angle(cropped frame) lens, the pic is a bit squished but you get the idea. The next pic you can see the little one from the first pic center back. Then if I back off 80 feet I can see the crowns over the house. Sorry about the raindrop on the lens there, we may be getting lucky with rain soon, fingers crossed.

For the first time I can remember and including the dreadful summer of 2023, the drought will persist at elevated levels past the "rainy season". I had 2 inches of rain last Sunday after 17 days with nothing and now 5 days since. One deluge in nearly 25 days doesn't cut it.

sonoranfans replied to Cape Garrett's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI am more inclined than before to believe these chambeyronia (previously kentiopsis) oliviformis are tougher in sun than Archontophoenix alexandre. Mine are planted next to each other and the C oliviformis stays a nice deep green, it never burns. Rate of growth froma small size looks good too. I might be tempted to put an archie and two oliviformis in a well spaced triple, the contrast would be nice to see.

Washingtonia generally don't lose leaf bases up near the bud before down low like that. Mariae is a prettier palm than a washie robusta, but that palm looks like it has been tortured.

Those braheas grow very well in a warm mediterranean climate and also in the desert climate of phoenix AZ. They lose their wax and they life in Florida. I had (6) blue armatas in arizona, I still miss them. Hot sun brings out the wax(blue).

If you want to kill the others I'd use water to push dirt away directly under the bud and snip the main taproot with a pruner. That palm will ultimately tower over everything, they throw a bunch of shade. I just underestimated how big the Beccariophoenix and the borassus would get being close to each other. 9' from the house is insane for a palm that is that large. It will ne3ed to be trimmed for years. The leaves are heavy with super thick petioles, almost double the thickness of my S. Causiarum's petioles. I now have a small satakentia in that spot, but if only I'd given it 5 more feet from my house it would still be there. I look forward to the progress you get in coming years. It will first go palmate, then after a couple years the fans will get large. After that it will trunk and the petioles will get super thick and longer as the trunk swells to a stunning thickness (with leaf bases on). The 12 foot across leaves, make Bismarckia leaves look average. One think I was struck by is the sharpness of the thorns combined with the weight of a leaf can get you cut -not stabbed- cut like a saw in a hurry. A falling leaf could be very hazardous. Royal leaves are 10-15 lb heavier in the crownshaft but they thump they don't cut. Drag the leaves by the leaflet tips when handling to prevent injury.

I have never seen a variegated Palmetto In person I thought that was so cool! They also had sabal Brazoria and for example things like blountstown dwarf minor. Again what I loved about Leu gardens is how they take advantage of the live oaks to use as a microclimate to grow palms I thought couldn’t grow in this zone! When you get out of the city areas where they only plant date palms palmettos and queens rarely in the town, seeing how many palms can actually grow in Orlando is crazy. (I thought only sugar palms and other things besides the regular would do well there. Also chamaedora or whatever. Could also tell some things did get damaged in winter I know this winter in Orlando was hard. But everything seemed to pull through!
