Normally my alfredii doesnt hang below the horizontal, but hurricane milton damaged the oldest leaf stems(longintudinal splits) with big winds. The upper 2/3rds of the crown(above the horizontal) is new growth since milton hit oct 2024.. Here it is today still recovering but doing well. The ability to get the whole palm in with camera requires a wide angle lens(17mm cropped frame) -and standing as far away as possible- so the crown appears more narrow than in person. Its now about 30'+ wide and 30'+ tall, within say 2' both dimensions. This palm is a few months under 16 years in the ground from a 3 gallon size. I will trim the leaves as they brown, but when they get large, they usually don't have the older leaves hang down like this, they go to about the horizontal meaning its about 10' normally(without hurricane damage) to the lowest leaf when walking under it. Its a tad dried out due to our drought and lack of consistent rain for the last 10 months but the last few weeks its looking better and better.

Been dry for nearly a week until yesterday. Picked up a quick 1.28" of rain with rain rates peaking at 3.64"/hr. It was a gusty little storm too, lots of lightning. Daily chances for pop ups continue but its never a guarantee.

I have a huge romanzoffiana at a very similar distance. It's going to be fine.

I am getting close to the first inflorescence opening on a palm acquired as a Cocothrinax borhidiana hybrid. When posted in the past, Cocothrinax miraguama was suggested as a potential parent in the mix. I look forward to the inflorescence opening to see if it provides any insights. I find it to be a particularly attractive palm for a small space in my coastal full sun. It has great contrast in the abaxial and adaxial leaf color, nice matting on the trunk and stiff blades on its leafs. It is possible that the smaller plant at the base is actually a seperate palm, as it has grown much slower. The other stem's original trunk started to lean and a new growth point on the base of that trunk emerged. The taller trunk is the newest growth point and has grown at quadruple the speed of the smaller plant at it's base. The smaller plant seems to hold its leaves tighter as well, which is more like true borhidiana would.

It's good to see folks having success with Brahea moorei. Mine all got too much sun and were cooked. I want to try them in a better location if JFG has them available again.

Years ago I got some free seeds with an order from the defunct seller Ortanique. One of the plants I germinated got planted near a (then) small umbrella tree. Things have grown a lot since then and its petioles are crazy long looking for sun. But it’s a trouble free palm that doesn’t ask for much..

Water and every 6 weeks palmgain (As i think you use) on the mules as they are potassium hogs and fertilizer should have a 1.5 or higher ratio of potassium to nitrogen.

In arizona and here I have grown 5 sp livistona, only one(sarigus) is was big a threat as copernicia baileyana. I had rigida, mariae in arizona, beautiful in the desert. I like the rich green leaf colors they get here, they look more lush and rich in color compared with washies and sabals here in florida. The decora I have is 30' and starting to get the big winds. Milton seriously damaged all leaves, much worse than she shorter saribus and chinensis but it has come back. We have had 2 marginal cat 1's and the cat 2 Milton and my take is that these are not hurricane tough. I though the bud looked a little crooked after Milton and was concerned I might lose it, but it pulled through. I never see any livistona sp naturalized here despite a number of chinensis installed by newhome landscpers. so they would be a good wide spread planting choice, unlike the phoenix sp. Nitida, autstrailis, rigida, mariae and more Livistona sp should be more widely planted here. The chinensis prefer part shade to look lush, others mentioned above are more sun tough and are going to be more drought and clueless homeowner tolerant here.

If you change your mind I am ready to send you phoenix rupicola seeds when they ripen, phoenix rupicola is very beautiful😀

Look for ptychosperma waitianum and burretianum. New red leaf and a beautiful palm. Worth a try! I just put down 120 seeds iam that confident of burretianum! Richard

Australia is a beautiful country! They do take a bit of cold not snow white frost but cool temperatures yes. Give them room though. If you want seeds I know where you can get them!

What caught my eye was three palms I gave a friend 6 years ago, that I had never seen until today. I will say I was impressed with the archontophoenix, beccariophoenix and the Wallachia. Just planted in some very hard conditions with no attention and temperatures down to minus 1.

I can relate to that, iam tropicals fan all the way. But I do dislike those big Phoenix palms just not to my liking! 😁

So long as there are no frosts, plant in winter. Super special tropical stuff I wait for spring, but it’s fair game for any proven winter winners in my garden. I just planted my Dypsis robusta taking advice from @tim_brissy_13 about getting it in the ground to improve it’s growth, with it being one of the biggest growing dypsis in the genus, iam only holding it back in a container.

Actually quite the opposite. The greener, lusher, tropicaler, the better! But decaryi just looks a mess haha

Theres quite a few Livistona varieties in Australia. You still see Australis for sale in the odd retail nurseries, but the big chain stores dont touch (them no pun intended) they can’t have there special customers getting jabbed by thorns can they, it would upset the sales department. It’s only the real collecter nurseries or specialty nurseries that grow them. Australis is in good demand for the landcare groups for regeneration projects. Also in demand by the native plant gardener who only wants Australian plants for their garden, and theres quite a lot of those gardens around. So thorns or no thorns they are here to stay. Mind you though some of those South American palms from the Amazon are pretty deadly!

Good luck, more probably the second hurdle is more challenging, at least in my climate. Same with Wettinia..
