Thank you for your replies. The fertilizer I used was PalmGain 8-2-12. I used about 1 1/2 lbs and applied it around the base in early July. I do want to mention the heat in Florida has been intense this summer and some of my outdoor plants have struggled with the heat.

Yes. Copernicia berteroana flowered again this spring. Just planted the seeds last week to start a new batch. Copernicia macroglossa 'should' flower next spring. It has over 6 feet of wood trunk...🤷‍♂️😄 aztropic Mesa, Arizona

They seem to thrive on heat, their native habitat is granite boulder country in the tropics. My ones are in sandstone country and the hotter the weather the more they love it. That looks like fire damage, I know it gets hot in WA but omg that’s hot!

Clay soil with frequent watering sounds like the issue. Pull the rocks away from the root area and see if the soil is wet. I’m not very familiar with Pindo’s but I remember having one in sandy soil with no supplemental water and it was happy.

A great way to increase your palm collection is through mail order. Definitely a lot faster than seeds. Most palm collections have been fueled thiis way, with a lot of specialty growers offering up there goodies via mail order. So the next time you’re googling away track down a mail order palm seller, you just never know what you will find, a great way to increase your collection and find that rare palm you’re after!

Agree with Manganese (Except it’s Mn, not Mg) deficiency. These minor nutrient (Those other than N-P-K) deficiencies can look similar but the key is when it shows. Manganese (Mn) deficiency affects the new emerging leaves. Magnesium (Mg) and Potassium (K) affect the older leaves. Sandy soil and a lot of rain tend to create nutrient deficiencies even though you applied fertilizer. What specific palm fertilizer did you use and how much? There are many different formulations and they all can say “palm fertilizer”. For example, Sunniland has only .14% Mn with a 6-1-8 N-P-K ratio while Palm Gain has 1% Mn and is 8-2-12. Generally speaking, the Palm Gain has the better formula for Florida sandy soils. It follows the guidelines (8-2-12+4Mg) set by Tim Broschat at UF. One small shrub that is practically unbeatable for ease of growing and stunning flowers, perhaps the azalea comes close, but the rhododendrons have a league of their own in the garden. Prolific blooms and a lot of varieties to suit most colour palettes. A plant for bright shaded areas or just some good morning sun and shade for the rest of the day. They like a little water to get established, and after that just a good drink now and then in between rain events. There one for my garden!

Think it’s not just the heat but UV takes a toll on the trunk and then lack of regular watering and fertiliser. Some in my area the trunks are falling apart. This one is 25 years old full all day sun, never fruited according to the owner and not the best looking specimen. That said, shows how resilient Foxtails are.

That’s a lot of cats @Harry’s Palms and a lot of love. I only ever had two cats and it was a drama when they would bring home rabbits and let them go inside. Then one cat I his name was Felix and he was the $6000 dollar cat due to vets bills. The love they give is soulful. You certainly have you’re hands full with three on medication, but that’s what we do, they can’t talk so we are responsible for them until the end. And the trouble they can cause that’s all fun and chaos. Truly wonderful little creatures. Richard

It’s just timing, introducing them in the heat of summer is just bad news, potted and newly planted specimens just don’t have the roots to uptake the water. Keep them potted till mid autumn moving them around to different light levels then plant and water, water, water! My impatience makes me my own worst enemy, I recently planted a fair few alexandrae and cunninghamiana straight from nursery shade grown stock in our winter, they both still ended up with a bit of leaf burn, cunninghamiana being the worst.

For me because of extreme heat (110+) will beat this balm down

After some decent storms last night, rain in the morning and cloud cover that lingered thru about noon, temps barely made it into the 90s, after one heck of a hot August.. 83 and still fairly muggy at 9:05PM, Headed toward a perfect low in the mid / upper 70s around the neighborhood by sunrise.. Week ahead looks ...warm ...but MUCH nicer than it has been.. Trough hanging around the western U.S. thru the week, will keep the worst of the heat outta here, for now at least. Rain chances back off for a day or 2, before ticking up again as we head toward the upcoming Labor Day Weekend. Depending on what happens w/ the tropical system that .......might...... approach CA and the southwest by the weekend, we could see anything from low ..but decent... rain chances return, ..or something more significant.. Regardless, for the time being, we may avoid another extended stretch of 105+ heat as we head into the first full week of September, and Meto. Autumn. Does this mean we're -completely- done w any more 110s? ..We'll see. Yeahh... we've seen them as late as October, but this may be one of those years we avoid that, thankfully. ..Fingers Crossed.

I have two tuckeri and one Alexander. They’re going in full sun. I’ve been trying to acclimate them by putting them out in morning and noon sun. I have one cunninghamiana thats in filtered light and the fronds crisp a little where they get more sun. The alexander is the tallest. Im planting them as multiples. After my alfredii croaked I really can’t have any more unsightly palms in the front. Should I put a shade cloth over them in the afternoon? We have about a month of intense UV rays. Once it hits October it will still be hot, but uv rays won’t be as intense.

Rancho Cucamonga is 2100 feet above sea level? I thought it was much lower. I figured apple valley and Victorville high desert would be that high. Im surprised you don’t get a lot of frost at that altitude.

August 31, 2026 It has been so brutally hot and humid. As of today it’s in the low 80’s so much better. It really ruins the novelty of having a tropical fruit garden in this weather haha. I’ve been watering a ton and the smaller two still get attacked by white fly so I spray for that still. And were past concern over the powerlines💀

We have had rain 4 of the last 5 days 1 inch, 1 inch, none, and then 0.5 inches before today's 1.6 inches and counting. We were dry on roads here today and I got caught in a deluge down south of bradenton on the 75, 35mph visibility max. I get back here its dry, nothing then from 4-7:30pm we get a good hard rain for 1.6 inches(4cm) in my new rain gage. Yard has puddles, its all soaked. The local golf course pond is up over the grass as are the retaining ponds in our neighborhood. Everything has responded after the moderate dry tipping, its looking like this summer will help heal most of the damage from Milton if this keeps up.
