2026_02 - Florida Palmageddon Observations and Damage Photo Thread

I mentioned about my coconut earlier. I got the ladder out today to try and get as close to the spear as possible. Pic on left is from a few days after the freeze where I put a sharpie on a long stick to make a mark. The right is today. Spear pushed up over 12" it's opening and I'm seeing green. If I marked the petiole, odd that it's more brown when the petioles exposed to the freeze are still green. This is what I did the last month: Copper fungicide x 2 14 days apart Root stimulator Recovery mix applied to soil. It's like a very light fertilizer Banrot Watered well once a week Now I'm leaving it alone and see what happens.

It may. They really should treat with fungicide if they haven't. It is stressed and just figuring things out.

    Chamaedorea glaucifolia ?

Two different tipe of insertions of the leaflets on Chamaedoreas of two different pots..... Are both C. glaucifolia? 20260228_104700.heic 20260228_104747.heic
  10. I believe untrimmed is more natural, and beautiful just because of that reason. I also believe in a self-sustaining environment as opposed to just synthetic fertilizer applications, or weed/bug killer applications. I do believe in synthetic fertilizer applications mixed with self-sustaining environments however. By self-sustaining environments I mean that the fruit is formed, falls when ripe, gets eaten by whatever microscopic bugs are down in the soil, gets transformed into fertilizer for the plant. I attached an image of bugs working hard at night after an application of Unsulfured Blackstrap Molasses Just my opinion.

    Chamaedorea glaucifolia ?

Yes, the summer is the rainiest season.
  12. Unfortunately, I live in the high desert where my relative humidity is usually 25-30% and scorching hot during summers. Not anything like the climate you are in but then there in lies the challenge. I can only dream of having a lush humid climate outside like you do but we work with what we have and I guess zone pushing is part of the fun. I am sure your climate presents a whole new set of challenges as well. At least inside, I can actually control the climate to an extent. Cheers Tin

Windmill palm roots girdling in a small pot.

That's amazing how it's that large in a small pot. Someone grew it right!

I imagine it was a somber day. Sorry for you.

Windmill palm roots girdling in a small pot.

Just find a shady spot where your hose will reach and dig a hole, man. IMHO they look like trash in full sun, it'll never be happy and they look like telephone poles with hair. I put my Trachies in a shaded corner on my property where they basically get morning sun and they're happy. Mine are a lot smaller, but que sera sera. $14 for that is a crackhead price. Give it some room to grow.

    Colocasias

I ordered a couple Colocasia Redemption bulbs from Holland Bulb (they're 50% off for preorder and free shipping for new customers) and I'm haggling on eBay for a couple others. I'm gonna put the Redemption next to a pair of crape myrtles on the driveway, I think the pink on pink is just gonna be straight dope. I've got a dead DIRECTV tree I need to get out of the way, it's in the perfect spot for one of these. The White Lava and Thai Giant showed up, too. Between those and the bananas I should have plenty of shade and color to go around while I wait for the palms to do something.
  17. Removed a few palms from my yard today. Definitely a somber day, but it had to be done, and a lot of lessons were learned I think. I also trimmed away all of the damaged trunk from my cordylines. Hopefully they will recover. Here's what the coconut that's fairly close to me here in Deltona is looking like now (it's the only nice one I'd seen in town prior to the cold snap). I see some green on the petioles, so not sure if it may have some chance of a recovery. The owners didn't do anything to try to protect it.
  18. Oh look I have another angle of the same Beaucarnea! I was amazed when I saw it in person it’s absolutely gigantic.

    Garden Visitors

No picture of the actual visitor but I know it's the squirrels. They like to take nuts, seeds, acorns, and hide it all over. I got a 40' long horizontal bar mounted on my wood fence and I made it out of 4 sticks of 1/2" EMT electrical conduits. During the recent cold spell I moved all these orchids inside, and I noticed there is something rolling around inside the conduit. Hmmm...what is it? I took the conduit and tilted it and a few dozen acorns rolled out onto the ground. The squirrels have been stashing acorns inside the conduit, probably just keep pushing new ones inside...BUT how the heck are they planning to dig them back out? Last night I noticed in one of my potted palms, a peanut has germinated. Again, the squirrels put peanuts into my pot.

    What palm is this?

It’s not the only Palm from Round Island, but palms from there do great in South Florida. The last native one of these on the Island died in 2024. https://news.mongabay.com/short-article/2024/11/last-wild-hurricane-palm-of-its-kind-falls-marking-extinction/ https://palmpedia.net/wiki/Dictyosperma_album_var._conjugatum

    What’s been germinating @happypalms

Thanks , Richard . Good tip . When I get ready to pot them up , I will post pics for ID. Right now , I will let them grow a bit . I have so many containers of seeds that I’m gonna need to find a place to put them once they are potted up. The ones from the last couple of years are under the Rhopalostylus near the Ernie’s. Full on bright shade with a breeze, perfect👍. Harry

    Sylvester imminent death?

Thanks Fusca. Will do. I’ve had a lot of palms get foliage damage and survive from the spears this time the foliage is ok and the spears are in trouble.

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?

Can't argue with that! Happy planting and growing!

What is your current yard temperature?

Current temp is 91F in the east valley with a high of 94F and low of 56F. According to the last post it appears that this is officially the warmest winter in record for Phoenix, AZ which probably isn't surprising to anyone who lives in the area. Absolutely beautiful weather here (some people think it's too hot but I moved here for the heat so I'm enjoying it).
  27. The borhidiana is probably my favorite Coccothrinax species due to its compact growing nature and extreme hardiness. Lately, I've been growing more of these from seed to add to the collection. 🌴 aztropic Mesa, Arizona

    What’s been germinating @happypalms

Hi Jack away I say!!! I get labels lost or mixed up, you do a tray of seedlings with only 5 of certain species and the one you put the label in does and you thought I will know which one it is, by looking at the same seedlings in that group. Argh but I put another group of seedlings with that tray. So your lost in the memory of time and it goes pear shaped. Rookie mistake we all do. But good on Dave for sending those seeds. One way to tell is have a look at the seed you can sort of guess that way. Richard
