My Nannorrhops seed came from 2 or 3 sources which got mixed together. It could have been from a local palm, from ebay, or possibly from @JohnAndSancho.

Actually, I have been experimenting with the self watering containers for some Anthuriums and ferns, plants that can’t quite go the entire week without water. They’re kind of expensive if you need a whole lot of them, but they are working pretty well.

July 16, 2026 Sorry for the mess

I’ve seen some parrots in the neighborhood, and was trying to track down which specific species they were. I couldn’t get too close of look, though I believe it’s one of the ones from this article: https://www.socalparrot.org/localparrotid Anyone know which species these may be and a good way to attract them? I believe they may have been eating the figs from the tree in the picture. Who else has parrots?

Ok I planted a palm tree. I wanna be cool again. I also don't know if it's trying to push an inflo or if a Bahia grass seed literally sprouted right next to the growth point. Anyway this is the Mexicana @5am sent me about 14 years ago and I mounded it up just enough to where I ran out of raised bed soil.

That certainly sounds like how I’d describe male Trachycarpus inflorescences. I’ve heard of some palms changing sex but can’t recall if that was Trachycarpus.

Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I couldn‘t find any picture of a previous inflorescence. All I can say is, that it behaved and always looked like a male to me. For example the inflorescences had a very bright yellow/orange colour, where very bushy and always went dry and crispy very quickly after the bloom. And above all: It has never made any seeds, until this year.

That is one problem associated with a plant collection, depending on the size of the collection. Going for in holidays you need someone who can do that watering and check on your plants. Or it’s short 3 day trips, depending on the season. They are like having pets only you cant board them in pet resorts. Now theres a business idea plant resorts and plant sitting!

@Chester B what was your experience on Rosei’s growth rate when you were in Oregon. That’s definitely not one that is on many people’s radar here! Very cool. As for the comment on yellow coloration I think it must be a combination of late evening lighting and iPhone camera setting. This is a picture of it from the same day before it went in the ground.

A few more blooming this week. I know many of you can grow your vandas attached to your palm tree trunks; which is so nice to see. I have been growing my vandas now in large glass vases for the winter months indoors. It made a great difference by keeping the roots hydrated and in a constant growing state throughout the winter. This really helped with a jump on the summer season. When I finally put them outdoors, they went into Bloom faster than ever. Normally, I would be waiting until September to see any to blooms. I live in Central Florida and am looking into purchasing a Livingston Natida. After the January 2026 freeze that killed my royals, I am hoping that the Natida is cold hardy enough to endure another freeze
