It seems impossible in the US to find a straight Cycas panzhihuaensis

Other seasons it has looked decent again by Christmas. Other years it has looked fine by Christmas. Once at least two new healthy fronds open, it distracts the eye from any remaining damaged ones. I tend to think that it would be hard for an overnight radiation freeze, sandwiched by double digit (C) temperatures the day before and after to completely kill an otherwise healthy and established bungalow. No hurry to see that theory tested however. It's hard to see in the early morning light in the rush to get to work, but it looks like it still has some green remaining, which will help. Good news is that from what I can see, a near neighbour's ones look fine. They (house and palms) are on isolated small rise in an otherwise flat area - they sit about 6-8m higher. Glad for that, as for some angles from home, their now sizable and flourising bangalows form a nice background/horizon that complements the view of my own palms. I know that place has sold since the people that planted those palms were there. New owners could be forgiven for not taking into account that this was the worst feeze in 10 years and not wanting to look at damaged palms for a few months. So far, my two other bungalows and everything else looks untouched but won't really know till the weekend to see in broad daylight. I still have pepper plants that look just the same as they did in mid summer (they are against a north facing wall of house and were covered as well).

This can happen following heavy rainfall events and very wet soils. It is usually not serious unless it is followed by a second or third malformed leaf.

That’s pretty good growth for three years . Juvenile palms grow slow but speed up (usually) when they get about that size . Harry

The Allagoptera is a wimp in the ultimate sense. It outlived the Chambeyronia only because it is so close to the ground. Once it gets larger, it will be subject to the real cold. Is there a Pseudophoenix in there anywhere? The Thrinax also surprises me. I lost a larger one in 2010 at 25F. Show me a living Kentiopsis, please!! If not, their so-called hardiness is mythical.

If it was older seed I would want to see how they germinate so just 10-20. But if new seed from this season upcoming probably 100s or even a thousand.

Not cheap cutting down trees , hindsight is a wonderful thing. I have a white cedar tree that’s next to go when the funds are available. The pines get so tall as well, so a lot of distance is covered in one falling. And there nothing better than a trip to Europe, I was fortunate enough to stay with a family in Budapest for 6 weeks. There’s always next year for a Europe trip, for me now give me the South Pacific islands, at least they have tropical palms.

One more tree down is one less to bother me in future. We did get a tree lopper in to take out 2 live trees near the shadehouse back in 2024 and one near the house. The trees nearer the house are half the size. None are an issue near the house. But those 3 trees to cut down cost me a trip to Europe. This tree that came down was healthy and a long way from the shadehouse. But even though it was healthy, it had grown up in a forest not on its own. So now it’s gone there are no more trees in that area. They’re all gone. It’s still not over yet. There are still more trees dying after the floods of 2021. Those pine trees have all grafted their roots together. I know that from digging new plants in. So if one trees gets a fungus or bacteria they pass it to the next. However it has slowed way down now.

i agree with aztropic. the roots look like they rotted in transit. you can try to salvage them whatever way you can though. i'd try soaking them in peroxide after cutting the rotten ends off. but even the top one looks pretty bad and it has spots of possible rot even near where it started sprouting. chances are the rot already spread all the way down.

@aztropic Thanks. I think I'll try only the top one. The 2nd one seems unlikely. Bummer. Then again, I only have space for one. The ones in pot would be just backups in case the one in ground does not sprout. I didn't realize how big Borassus seeds are. I knew the fruit was huge but the seeds are no joke.

I don't think either of the sprouted ones will make it. Pot them up, sure, but don't expect anything to happen. If you don't see any sign of a leaf after a month, root has probably rotted.🤷‍♂️ aztropic Mesa, Arizona

Hi. I had recently ordered some Borassus aethiopum seeds (from a vendor I had purchased seeds of other palms before and I found very reliable). Problem is, 2 out of 3 came in already sprouted. The largest seed, which is the one I have planted (directly in the ground), had NOT sprouted and I am hoping it is viable and it just was a bit slower. These two, though, I am not sure what to do and if they are salvageable or not. One seems to have a root damaged and soft/mushy halfway through (the one on the bottom), the other one has a stronger root and it clearly less damaged, but the tip is indeed somewhat damaged and it seems it is shaped like a "hook". Does it look like I should attempt to salvage these? I have pots deep enough for these to grow (they are 4 feet deep). I could absolutely use a backup if one in the ground does not sprout, but I don't want to attempt to grow a plant that will get stunted and die (especially in the case of the one with the healthier root, which is healthier but not going straight). Any advice?

yeah i've seen alot of variegated plants before and it looks like variegation to me. reason why it would randomly pop up is because of random genetic mutation. some indivitual plants have genes that make them more suspectable to forming variegation. so once in a while any part of them say a leaf can mutate during cell division, and a variegation will be created. often times these will revert after a while so you get normal growth, variegated, and then normal growth on top. though not always it depends how stable the mutation is, sometimes they are more permanent. variegations can never be passed down through. only the susceptibility to them.

The sulfur smell sure tells the tale, root rot. Good luck with the fungicide, construction dirt and masonry will limit drainage and you should amend the site so its drains if you plan to plant a tree there. Every hole you dig should be filled and watched for drain time to determine if you have a "clay pot" in the ground before planting. I had to dig through my top 3 1/2 feet of soil in arizona to get to dirt that would drain well. When I did the drainage test it dropped only half way in 24 hrs and was still mucky bottom at 72 hours. That spot may be an issue for any deep rooted tree unless you can get down to drainable dirt.
