Cycad cones and flushes
Tracy replied to Urban Rainforest's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than PalmsI acquired this as Encephalartos middelburgensis as a 2 leaf seedling. Some have said it looks more like nubimontanus but it has more upright leaflets than the nubimontanus I am growing. Perhaps a nubimontanus × middelburgensis. Patience and cones may sort out the mystery for me. Both the main caudex and the largest pup are pushing out flushes in the photos below. -

Thanks for the info I have a teddy bear palm growing in semi shade in my area it is one of my fastest growing palms and have a triangle palm beside it giving some shade I may plant mine close by!! Tribears
quaman58 replied to 96720's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI was gifted a seedling about 8 years ago, maybe 6" tall at the soil line. Within a year or so, I shoehorned it into an area that was a bit protected from full on sun by an umbrella tree. Like their parents, they don't seem too fussy about exposed locations, handling sun pretty well. Water requirements are modest as well, relatively speaking. It's about 8 ft. tall now, so growth rate on my hillside is moderately fast. Cool palm, one of only a handful of hybrids I have. -
Freshly planted Windmills in West Virginia, any help?
GregVirginia7 replied to Coalminer's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSReally nice palms you have there. @Allen is a great source for protection methods for sure. You are on the west side of the Appalachian mountain range from me here outside of Washington, DC in Northern Virginia, so you guys in that region seem to get more severe winter weather. With the right protection, they can do well. But a winter like we had here last winter can really do a number on even the hardiest, like unprotected Needle palms. As yours establish, they’ll become more tolerant of cold. You look to be in a 7a growing zone. I’m in 7b with a back yard south facing growing zone and that is most beneficial for natural protection. I’ve had a Trachy in-ground for 12-years and it’s 13’ tall now and I do give it minimal Christmas light/heat protection at the crown. Still, every winter it suffers frond damage. However, it recovers quickly and I clean out the ugliness toward fall. Hope all goes well and you’ve come to the right place for advise.

Old Faithful Survived its Worst Winter
GregVirginia7 replied to GregVirginia7's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSThank you…the picture doesn’t really show the damage to the fronds. All of them really got hammered. But I do like the way it keeps on ticking.

Is this a Livistona benthamii?
tim_brissy_13 replied to Alberto's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEGreat photos of a nice palm Alberto. I think it shows it’s either L decora or L drudei, but we probably already established that earlier. I’m sure someone will confidently know based on your photos. I can’t say im an expert on the differences, but palmpedia suggests drudei has purplish leaf bases vs green for decora, reddish curved spines on petiole margins vs black curved spines for decora, and inflorescences branched to 3 orders vs 4 for decora. Despite your clear photos and the clear description differences, I still can’t say I’d confidently know 🤣. Actually maybe zooming in I might see 4 orders of branching on the inflorescences but I’m not certain. I’d say it might be a stretch to call those leaf bases purple too. I’m leaning towards L decora but not confidently. -

Freshly planted Windmills in West Virginia, any help?
N8ALLRIGHT replied to Coalminer's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSYes cover the crown, you want to keep moisture out of the spear during the winter. This whole setup breathes between the frost cloth and leaves and mulch. And you could remove layers but since it breathes I generally don't. The palm is kind of hibernating so it does fine for 3 months with little sunlight ( some makes it through the frost cloth) December is when it gets its coat dependent on forecast and March it comes off. Lastly is a picture of my winter setup.
