this front brought no rain yesterday. Radar was lit up and it just disappeared, not a drop: today we just had 10 min downpour and nothing is on the radar or the fore3cast. Rain gage I read at 0.2 inch.

Thought I’d add a rapidly growing B. pimo. Allegedly sort of a dwarf palm, but not as much as I would’ve hoped being next to the driveway and all. Something my wife reminds me about regularly. I can see why it’s referred to as the “furry hesper palm”.

How the palm looks like now after weather cools down?

This is the only serviving Sabal minor in my garden. It still recovers from a severe attack by Paysandisia archon three years?ago. It is adult, since it blooms every year. It remains small, any guess about its classification according to aforementioned types?

Two bad, that I live in another continent. I have dozens of seedlings naturally sprouted under my adult specimen. I keep them in order to check differences from seedlings of other Brahea specimens in my garden, especially of Brahea brandegeei. What I have observed so far, is that ridges in strap leaves are more prominent.

The waxy blue leaves come out in the desert, they love the sun and heat, but also want to be deep watered regularly. Seems like older pics are gone from this thread. When I was in Arizona 1998 to 2009 I grew some brahea armatas. They glowed in the mid day sun and also just after sunset keeping the yard brighter than a green leafed palm for say 40 mins after sunset(?). Armatas take on an even more blue color when the sun isn't shining on them directly, dawn and sunset. They do tend to "whiten up" a bit with overhead suns, optical physics of the leaflets at work. A true favorite of mine ….how it all began! Back in 1990 I germinated 3 in a pot that now greet folks in my neighbors driveway. I have quite a few around the house , a few volunteers and seedlings . Come home today after a week away for work to find one of my Adonidia merrillii snapped, inside was all gooey. It’s never looked any good but not exactly sure what happened to it or whether it just had enough of the cold and wet nights. Then also lost a Caryota albertii, it’s been dwindling for a while now, lost two fronds first and now has given up completely. Was in a dappled shade spot with no wind.. Thankfully winter is coming to an end, it’s been a drawn out cold one with wet and windy nights, looking forward to our spring and the start of growth season.

You pretty well much grow any palm for most of its life in a container, it will stay alive if given the right cultivation techniques. You will basically bonsai it if you leave in the container forever. Choose the right size containers as pot up and in 4 to 5 years you will have a great specimen to plant out. They all start out in containers before planting some containers are bigger than others!

A few of the new plantings have survived winter well, I may have winter loses but I also get some fantastic winter winners. And this little batch is doing just fine. There are palms and then there are some real good palms. The Howea fosteriana stands that test of time in the palm world. You think of an indoor palm and this one sells itself to you. As a landscaping specimen it has graced many a garden!

No question it will naturalize in TN

In another decade it won't matter between me and one other guy we're basically introducing them in large quantities to the point that in another 10 to 20 years there will be an extensive population of them in the wild in my area. They clearly have the ability to reproduce on their own to produce stable expanding populations so just imagine what my work will turn into.

A very unusual plant from northern Australia that only occurs in the mangroves and lowland areas near Cairns and up into Cspe York. Having a symbiotic relationship with ants. It has survived in a container in the subtropics taking temperatures down to 2 degrees celcius. It has a tiny white flower and a very strange looking appearance. An unusual plant for any collection if you like strange and mysterious plants!

Does anyone have experience keeping this species in pots long-term? I live in Los Angeles and am looking to get one for my collection but don't at the moment have space to put it in the ground. Is it possible with the right care and pot size to keep C. alba alive for years in a pot or will they not survive unless in ground?

All my areca’s killed to the ground. My huge Christmas palms gone, now officially 3 of the royals are gone. So sad. I want to start over as it may be 20yrs before an event like it again. Almost all of the understory’s have grown back.

Oh wow we don’t get that here thankfully, we got very hot but not as hot as that to cause damage like that, it must be the UV that cooks them like that.
