Archontophoenix purple crownshaft
aabell replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI'm still very confused about about the differences between A. alexandrae, tuckeri, maxima, and myolensis - only having access to potentially mislabeled or hybridized material here in the States. A. maxima in particular is an enigma here, I think that name gets applied a lot to plants that have nothing to do with the Walsh River species. I've spent a lot of time looking at Dowe's description and any other online sources and have no confidence in being able to tell them apart, even when looking at seed. Meanwhile A. cunninghamiana displays at least as much variation across that huge range and is lumped together as one species, I agree I would love to see someone look at the genetics. -
Geonoma species showing good cool tolerance
Foggy Paul replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEWe are having ideal Geonoma weather here. 62 degree highs, soaking wet mornings thanks to heavy fog and mist, a real rain forest. The Geonoma undata has never been happier and now it’s big enough that the slugs don’t bother it too much. (The Lepidorrachis obtained from Darold last winter is pretty happy too.)

Archontophoenix purple crownshaft
tim_brissy_13 replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI’ve wondered about this. If you think about some species like Prestoea acuminata, various Geonoma sp like G undata, even Washingtonia filifera now that W robusta is lumped in, then the differences between Archontophoenix species (I’m thinking especially A alexandrae, maxima, myolensis and tuckeri) are relatively small. Recently genetic study is becoming much more accessible and affordable so hopefully there can be a study to understand the relationship between all of the Archontophoenix species. -

tim_brissy_13 replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDERamenta develops very early in A cunninghamiana. If your palms haven’t got it now, then they never will. Until last week I always thought of A cunninghamiana always having ramenta, but you’re now the second person to have confirmed plants in cultivation from seed collected from this population stay true to type and do not exhibit ramenta. Yeah agree with all that. One of 2 things must be true - the Dalrymple purple Archontophoenix are a new species, or the description of A cunninghamiana needs to be updated to include possibility of absence of ramenta ultimately it comes down to the question of ‘what is a species’. Perhaps genetic study can help decide if there’s enough difference between these palms and other A cunninghamiana from other locales vs the differences between other Archontophoenix sp. -
Archontophoenix purple crownshaft
Jonathan replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEIt's one of those moments when we're willing it to be something new, lol! Agreed though, it's pretty cool either way. Maybe Archontophoenix, like Rhopalostylis, just has a small number of highly variable species? The isolation of a population like the one at Eungella is potentially a first step towards speciation. - Today

Tyrone replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEWell here’s the thing. If Dowes description is 100% correct, Archontophoenix cunninghamiana has ramenta on the midrib. His description doesn’t say - sometimes absent. So maybe we are looking at an undescribed species due to that one thing, or, it is Archontophoenix cunninghamiana without ramenta. Either way is purely an academic discussion. Probably worth further investigation. It’s pretty cool though. -

Texas Palms
Robert Cade Ross replied to MarcusH's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSNot exactly in Texas but I think it’s remarkable that this row of coconuts along the mainland portion of Daytona FL survived 23-24° earlier this year . Even a few Christmas palms are coming back . 😱 -

Banana moth damage? Chrysalidocarpus
Tracy posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEMy Chrysalidocarpus Jurassic Park was showing some spear damage as it began to emerge. I posted it a while back and my friend Tom in Vista suggested possible banana moth damage. Fast forward to now and that spear is opening prematurely with clear damage. The spear is easily 4 feet shorter than prior leaves asas they began opening. Damage is also visible to the next spear that will push out. I have traded ithe growth point with hydrogen peroxide and a fungicide a few times over the last several weeks. Any other recommendations? -

Pygmy Date Palm Repotting Advice Needed - Zone 6b
Harry’s Palms replied to Allestria's topic in PALMS IN POTSThat is a multi so it’s gonna need a pot with ant least about 2-3” out , all around and at least that much more depth. If you were successful with the last one , you should be fine with this one . I use a sandy loam potting soil and mix in a bit of perlite to assist with drainage . I put medium sized , smooth pebble at the bottom of the pot before adding soil . This helps with drainage . I have never had P. Roebelini get fussy on me from repotting or transplanting . They are pretty tough palms. They do grow rather fast and have quite the root system. So be prepared to repot from time to time. Harry

Seed Trade for South Carolina Palms
Sias posted a topic in COLD HARDY PALMSI have found a lot of pindo seeds and sabal palmetto seeds, although the palmettos seem like they are not ready to fall yet, so they start to become available later in the fall, in numbers that are baffling. But I was wondering if anyone would want to trade some other types of seeds for them in the near future. RIght now I have about 50 butia capitata seeds that have been cleaned and are ready to germinate and I am germinating about another 60 or so. I'm new to this but I was wondering if anyone wants any of them, maybe to trade for other seeds, and if I should germinate them or send the seeds out as seeds. I definitely don't have room for 50-100 pindo /sabal palmetto palms so would love advice and any thoughts. I would love to grow some other types of palm trees as well.

So What Caught Your Eye Today?
Harry’s Palms replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDESo my friends Wodyetia is fruiting again . The seeds ended up at my door step . I moved them to the side of the house where they will be cleaned . Harry Seeds Gromet! It amazes me the size of these. He said it was raining apples in his front yard. I told him to wear a helmet. Not like coconuts but would seriously be a bonk on the head. 😂
