I thought sun burn is just a specific and infrequent case of leaf scorch? By the way, after reading more on leaf scorch, it seems like leaf scorch, overwatering and overfertilization are related? Because according to wikipedia, for example, leaf scorch can be caused by overwatering and overfertilization. Maybe that's why the symptoms are similar...

We all know that declared hardiness zones are just a guideline and local annual climatic variation must definitely be considered. There are places in California that are considered 8b that I would feel far more secure growing a certain palm, for example, than in places that are deemed 9a or even 9b in the SE US. The reason of course is that the California location will likely not vary much from year to year in its annual minimum temperature but one in the latter is far more unpredictable on just how cold it will get during the same time span since it is vulnerable to the occurence (or the lack thereof) of arctic air instrusions, which might be of considerable magnitude. Perhaps at least as useful would be a probability map that shows the likelihood of locations (also as a zone) reaching a certain threshold on an annual basis (e.g. 32F, 28F, 20F, etc). There could also be a 'weighted' formula to determine cold hardiness that is skewed towards the most recent years to take into account trends in climatic patterns.

That’s the idea of it, you’re only going to upset the apple cart, just to keep the peace and whole idea of community living, I suggest we stick with the idea of a utopian society where palms are everywhere and the temperature never drops below 18 degrees Celsius. I don't but I just bought this today at the orange store. I've had issues with rabbits and rats munching on palm seedlings in the ground and in pots. I plan to spray it around the palms tomorrow.

I would like to point out the following: The New Smyrna Beach Airport is a non-Fed AWOS station that does not report specific daily max/min readings and only hourly readings during operating (daytime) hours. The ones at Zephyrillis, Tampa Exec , Crystal River, Clearwater Air Park are also non-FAA AWOS stations that do not undergo quality control and this category is thus sometimes subject to bias and non-ideal siting. I am not saying the instrumentation at such locations and their resultant data cannot be reliable or accurate but they must be scrutinized a bit closer for potential discrepancies. In fact, the network of 'official' NOAA stations is inadequate and using data from 'filler' locations can certainly aid in determining a useful spatial climatological analysis.

I have a few similarly colored ones...22.5F isn't great for Pygmy Dates! I cut off anything that is completely brown and crispy, and leave fronds that are partially green. Sometimes I will but off the dead end of a frond, just to give airflow to the crown of the palm. Only things that have some green are actually contributing *new* energy to the palm. But live frond stems with just burnt leaflets still have some energy stored that the palm might "eat" for nutrients. So I kinda waffle on "cut off anything that's not green" versus "only cut off stuff that's totally crispy dead." I would definitely clean your pruners between palms, to avoid accidentally transferring diseases. I lopped the top off of a badly burned Bottle palm and it was all rotten and bright pink...like "pink rot" colored. Needless to say I trashed the whole thing immediately and cleaned the saw and blades with rubbing alcohol.

Sun burn is in necrotic patches where the leaf has been exposed, or are you talking about fertiliser burn, the leaves will curl up and the ends will start to look necrotic slowly or fast depending on how over fertilised the plants are, going black.

I guess it was time to update my Inkbird thermostat. Now the left side is named Colocasia Cooker and the right is Bulb and Palm cooker (character limited...blah) Anyway that's all I did today. That and chop up the colocasia stems I planted today. I mean, with all of those weeds my soil clearly needs more nitrogen, right? 😑

Can you please explain the difference in symptoms between overwatering and leaf scorch? I didn't mentioned, but they put slow release fertilizer. Can it still be too much fertilizer even if it's slow release, or it makes it unlikely?

Whatever has color , other than crispy brown , leave on there. When you fertilize , add some garden soil and use a claw to work it in . Make sure the mix is damp before fertilizing and keep the fertilizer away from the trunk of the palm. It looks like you are on your way . Harry

Yea that would be frustrating . It sounds like discussing the situation is not productive . Communal living can be great and it sounds like you folks have plenty of personal space to call your own and you may have to just just let this person do their thing . Good luck , Harry

You got it right Richard! I will look into that suggestion . We have a large Zamia Furfuracea out front but it is very different than what you are talking about. Harry
