Update: I found a photo from 4 years ago of the C monostachya in my post above. Was generously given to me by @palmtreesforpleasure . Photo taken after I received it, and it has been in ground since. Overall not fast, but I’m satisfied with its development. My new wave of seedlings are now at this size.

This genus is terribly difficult for me to differentiate between them. Even more than young Pritchardia, and that’s saying something. Nonetheless, here are two that were purchased either as argentea or maybe argentata..they’re similar in speed of growth and having silver backed leaves. Here you go!

To add to the bump: This species is relatively trouble free in Melbourne. My one in ground is in deep shade, south facing, cool position. Has coped with up to 44C/111F and down to -1.4C/29C without damage. Slow but robust; each new frond significantly larger than the past and now it is bipinnate. Growing from seed, seedlings have been mostly trouble free but I did randomly lose a couple to some kind of rot. I assumed at the time drainage was the problem. Remaining seedlings are at 3-4 frond stage after 2-3 years with strong root systems in 70mm and 90mm pots. Agree with Colin’s assessment above. Great species for cooler climates. Caryota mitis is marginal at best here, and C monostachya is a much better choice for smaller gardens anyway.

-3.4 is harsh. I also see Chch had -4.5 or something the other night. I'd have quite a bit of solid damage here on various things like puka, and palms if that happended here in Dunedin, but most are in protected positions. We got down to +0.8 27 june, and again to 1.2 26 July which was bad enough. Appreciate you sharing your experience on here as I have found it very helpful. Hope any damage at your end can grow out quickly!

@NC Palm I agree, it looks like it had a crown infection coming out of winter. Common recommendations here are hydrogen peroxide, Daconil, Mancozeb, and any copper-based fungicide. If the new growth looks clean then the infection is probably gone. A squirt of regular household hydrogen peroxide will tell you. If it bubbles up, fungus is present and may still need some treatment. If there's no bubbling, then no fungus is present. H202 works well on plants, just like on humans!

30.3C / 86F max here on Tuesday. Expecting 35C / 95C tomorrow. I am now up to 44 days since it last rained here on 16th June. The latest GFS cycle takes me to day 60 without any rain here…

No rain today as this location ended up in the donut hole that formed in the storm. For the month, the various gauges have recorded between 6in and 7.25in of rain at various point in the yard. We've got 3 days to get 2in-3in of rain to have an average month. We'll see how it goes, but there are locations that are a lot worse off.

I don’t think it’s beetles it’s been going on for years! If it was beetles I would think it would be dead by now!! I’m just stumped!!

Bump. These surely are slow when young. I've got a couple of gifted three leaf seedlings in pots that are just crawling. Wondering whether anyone has experimented with added lime or limestone to the growing media and if so, whether it's made a noticeable difference? @HolyNewBee did you get some to germinate in the end? Very interested to see how your cold tolerance test works out!

Interesting that it looks chewed but not recently and it appears blackened. Might be fungal rot. Sick palms are the ones that get the bad fungal infections. It could be another insect pest that I have no idea about. I grew 4 bizzies in the AZ desert for 7 years./ They grew well and were on irrigation timer so they got plenty of water(30-40 gallons delivered overnight in 5 hrs) 2-3 times a week depending on season. I had one due of a root rot fungus, too near the more frequently irrigated flower bed. It died in winter after a 21-22F short cold event. When I dug it up the roots told me all I needed to know, the smell was not pleasant. I never saw the symptoms you are seeing. I wonder if those beetles can even survive in the arizona desert.

Hey there everyone. Its been a while. Had a rough NYC winter this year. Lots of snow and cold wet weather. Windmill Palm took a little beating!! But still thriving! 16ft to top of crown, 12ft to top of trunk. Just gave her a prunning. Unfertlized seeds avaliable.. not sure if you can pollinate them? Good luck to all this winter!! Bobby

This palm has had trouble for a long time I posted it not long ago and @sonoranfans said it might be a boron and water problem so that’s easy to take care of and it’s not going to be a quick fix,but then I noticed this frond that I forgot to post earlier and got me to start wondering what is going on?Looks to me like something was chewing on it!!

Went to just do a quick heat check and figured I'd check a couple other things while I was in the grow room. The heat index in there is 127°F right now, and I've left the heat mats plugged in but they're not cycling on - they're set at 85 and the thermostat says the soil is 97. Anyway. Y'all think these are ready to come out of the baggie?
