@Looking Glass looks awesome! The growth rate on your palms is way better than most of mine, especially the Gaussia Princeps near the walkway. At least I think that's what they are. I have a bunch of them and they are all slugs...barely more than a foot tall after 5ish years. What kind of roids are you feeding them?!? 🤣

@SCVpalmenthusiastthe "eating" of the older fronds seems at least normal, but I would have left the oldest ones on until fully crispy dry. At this point it might just be adapting to hot and dry. The old fronds do look a little bit stretched out, just in the spacing between leaflets...but it's hard to say for sure. If so that could explain the quick burning, at least partially. I'd do: Contact the nursery and tell them the old leaves are dying fast. If there's any kind of warranty make sure you get their input asap. Make sure your trickle of water is fully distributed on the existing roots and not just the nearby dirt. It'll take 6 months to really grow a lot of roots out into the surrounding dirt. One other possibility is that it's getting too much water and has root rot. I'm on sand here in FL, so it's tough to overwater. Excess water just sinks down to the water table, which at my place is about 6 feet down. But in clay I have read of dug holes basically filling with water like a lake...and not draining out at all. I have never dealt with clay soil, so I don't have any suggestions on what do do or what not to do with clay. Maybe someone out West can comment?

Bro lol. This grass is unkillable. But I'll snip that out once the mosquitoes chill. They're horrible this year. They're the size of silver dollars and they are violent. Thanks again for the plants. Bananas are going nuts too. If you want some exotic ones for your new yard they're waiting here.

My Nannorrhops seed came from 2 or 3 sources which got mixed together. It could have been from a local palm, from ebay, or possibly from @JohnAndSancho.

That would be a nice little Job for retirement LOL. Actually, I have been experimenting with the self watering containers for some Anthuriums and ferns, plants that can’t quite go the entire week without water. They’re kind of expensive if you need a whole lot of them, but they are working pretty well.

Looking good! And that's definitely grass next to it. Destroy it before it spreads.

I’ve seen some parrots in the neighborhood, and was trying to track down which specific species they were. I couldn’t get too close of look, though I believe it’s one of the ones from this article: https://www.socalparrot.org/localparrotid Anyone know which species these may be and a good way to attract them? I believe they may have been eating the figs from the tree in the picture. Who else has parrots?

Ok I planted a palm tree. I wanna be cool again. I also don't know if it's trying to push an inflo or if a Bahia grass seed literally sprouted right next to the growth point. Anyway this is the Mexicana @5am sent me about 14 years ago and I mounded it up just enough to where I ran out of raised bed soil.

That certainly sounds like how I’d describe male Trachycarpus inflorescences. I’ve heard of some palms changing sex but can’t recall if that was Trachycarpus.

Dateline Tampa: Photo of a dead Sylvester, 20yo-ish (likely fusarium?) that just grew very fast, adjacent to Washingtonian planted as a juvenile (I carried it in a small pot to the designated spot) at the same time ie 15 years ago, and then the Queen - 57 yrs old! (I’ve been here along time!) (Sylvester coming out ASAP, but it’s big and in a tight spot… also hardly ever ‘groom’ my palms anymore… they live longer but the neighbors don’t like me as much) Cheers

Thanks for your replies. Sorry, I couldn‘t find any picture of a previous inflorescence. All I can say is, that it behaved and always looked like a male to me. For example the inflorescences had a very bright yellow/orange colour, where very bushy and always went dry and crispy very quickly after the bloom. And above all: It has never made any seeds, until this year.

That is one problem associated with a plant collection, depending on the size of the collection. Going for in holidays you need someone who can do that watering and check on your plants. Or it’s short 3 day trips, depending on the season. They are like having pets only you cant board them in pet resorts. Now theres a business idea plant resorts and plant sitting!

@Chester B what was your experience on Rosei’s growth rate when you were in Oregon. That’s definitely not one that is on many people’s radar here! Very cool. As for the comment on yellow coloration I think it must be a combination of late evening lighting and iPhone camera setting. This is a picture of it from the same day before it went in the ground.
