Moving a small Canary Palm
Las Palmas Norte replied to GMann's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
You're gonna need a small back hoe to unearth and move that. It's going to be an excessive weight to move out of the hole and into the new location. Save your back and also avoid a hernia. -
Hey SoCal -Get ready!
Las Palmas Norte replied to Harry’s Palms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
A similar or series of events took place in our region in the PNW. Copious amounts of rain in some areas which created flooding from the Nooksack River in mid December. It also pushed temperatures above normal and in some cases set a daily record (mid 60°s F). Fortunately, all that nasty stuff stayed clear of our immediate area, but sadly others had farms, homes and livestock affected. Stay safe folks. - Today

How dare you plant those palms I was going to buy Peachy -
EXTREME wind today in Carlsbad (North San Diego county). Okay, I hear laughing from some of you, but it was extreme by SoCal standards! I noticed my husband was laying down palms, so took some video (this isn’t even the windiest moment). My yard is particularly vulnerable due to so many palms still residing in pots. Some like the Licuala sumawongii did amazingly well (confirming I picked a great spot for it). Others needed to be laid down or moved to a spot sheltered from the wind. Anyway, hope you enjoy watching my under construction garden get blown around a bit! Dec-24-2025-1766642514_4973559.mp4

Some non electricity generated color as the …” winter “ holiday season reaches its peak here in the desert. I say winter sparingly because at least so far, weather here hasn’t been anything close to what one might expect during the shortest days of the calendar year … which are starting to lengthen as we speak ( when sunset occurs specifically ) thanks to the generous warm rains at the end of September and in early October, “ …and the “ warm enough “ weather ever since, warm season stuff, that should be done for the year, is still going. same rains also gave the spring flowering stuff I shouldn’t see flowering now a very early head start .. can’t remember the last time I’ve seen flowering things from two distinct parts of a year flowering side by side. …At the same time? Quick burst of rains in November are getting the rest of the spring stuff to come up and going May end up shorter than what the earlier rains helped along if it stays mainly dry over the next 4 to 8 weeks but, plenty of color on the way when we reach the more typical start of the spring season flowering cycle in the yards. all in all, definitely not your typical short days time of the year here this year. “ fall season “ zinnias and late torch glow adding plenty of exotic flair on Xmas eve ….out front? It’s already spring out there …at the end of December Emory rock daisy solanum sp. ….Gotta love this crazy, “ edge of the tropics “ Sonoran Desert climate 👍🏽 ✌🏽

Update-these are doing very well, new growth is all green and seems to be handling full sun just fine.

Great Christmas day here, 25C and sunny with light winds. Hasn't been the greatest holiday period though and looks quite wet at times through next week also.

Does anyone have a Sabal Rosei?
NC-Key-Bar replied to Peachs's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
https://www.plantdelights.com/products/sabal-rosei-augusta-rose This is a popular variety. Many sellers on Etsy as well. I have a small one in ground that has seen 14 degrees F and frozen multiple times. It is growing more vertical, faster, than the palmettos. Zone 8a/b -
Trachycarpus ukrhulensis, Jubaeopsis caffra, Barcella odora, some rare Butia and Syagrus, Phoenix loureiroi var humilis and other Palm Hunter Seeds
Keys6505 replied to Bigfish's topic in For Sale
I'm probably not going to use the correct terminology here, but I take the seed (which typically contains 1-3 "nuts" inside) and hold it on a concrete floor using vice grips with a thin rag over it to stop any projectiles. I then tap with a hammer LIGHTLY until I feel the shell crack. I gently work it open by hand to try to avoid any damage to the nuts inside. I stick them in the baggie/medium like that, I don't try to fully dislodge the nuts from the shell. -
Ensete Banana sulking?
JohnAndSancho replied to JohnAndSancho's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
I'm ready for them! Just next time I won't mix up 2 gallons of neem oil. I think that was enough to spray half the county. I sprayed the whole room ceiling to floor, pots, benches, corners, you name it and still had enough left over to dump on fire ant beds. It didn't phase the fire ants a bit. -
Trachycarpus "Bulgaria" X "Nainital"
JohnAndSancho replied to N8ALLRIGHT's topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
I've been splitting them up so I have plenty, trust. I've barely put a dent in the box you sent. I potted up what I *think* was the Pretoria to get it jump started. I'm hoping to get a convoy of blue haired ladies in their F150s out here to clean me out so I can start clean again in the fall. I'm gonna have plenty for mom to look at (she loves them) -
Ensete Banana sulking?
Johnny Palmseed replied to JohnAndSancho's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
Ensete bananas are not exactly like musa bananas. Like you noticed, partial sun is better for these. They are beautiful but more difficult in my opinion. Also they are very susceptible to spider mites. -
Atta boy Johnny! Save a couple for your yard

Ensete Banana sulking?
JohnAndSancho replied to JohnAndSancho's topic in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms
The game plan is to sell the pups! I'm gonna throw most of them in the yard come spring. I've been fertilizing them a lot and they get tons of light and aside from the Ensete they're happy. I'm getting at least a new leaf a week from all of them. Yes they do! I've been rotating between a 4-4-4, Dr Earth's Organic Tropical and Palm fertilizer, and a sample pack of Wellspring Gardens water soluble Banana Fuel at 1/2 strength and they're happy. I keep forgetting I've still got some old fish emulsion and liquid kelp, and some Osmocote too. They're absolute water and fertilizer hogs, I'm feeding them their old leaves as they fall off. They're my babies and they know it. I'm spoiling them rotten. I've got a tissue culture banana on order (variegated golden yellow) and if that goes well, I'll try some more of those. I'm loving them right now since I can watch them grow almost hourly while I wait for the palms to do something. It's such a contrast in growth. -

A Colorful Northern California Palm Trunk Post
sonoranfans replied to Jim in Los Altos's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I was just remarking that all of our palm trunks should look like like california palm trunks. Just using the beach boys lyrics(california girls) and inserting palm trunks. Of course I know all your palms are in california, unless you have purchased another property that I don't know about. - Yesterday

Perlite and another shop light showed up today. I guess the porch pirates aren't just limited to porches anymore, since all of the packing tape on the perlite box was sliced open. I dunno what they expected to find in a box that big that weighs nothing - clothes? Purses? I know it didn't happen at the house because we're in BFE my nearest neighbor is 1/4 mile away and we woulda heard and seen them coming up the driveway. But whatever. Coir will be here Sunday. I haven't done much of anything other than sleep for like a week, I dunno if I'm sick or just exhausted or what, but I finally hauled the last bag of garbage out last night. I think my Ensete Marrelli is unhappy from getting too much light, the 3rd pineapple crown I was gonna attempt pretty much crumbled into nothing but I'm still gonna stick it in some dirt and see what happens. I got nothing to lose but time. Aside from needing a big pile of larger pots, we're doing well - and I'm gonna order those soon. 5g pots for the keepers and try to limit stuff to 3g for what I want to sell. The bedroom jungle is pretty sparse now, I need to work on that again. Because, you know, I just don't have enough stuff growing right now or whatever. I have dozens of Sabal Minors to pot, there's probably another Brahea or 2 ready too. And hundreds of more Sabal seeds to sprout.

As of 10:02 am we had 4.1” . At day break the wind was furious with a bit of thunder and lightening . Blew a frond off my large Queen palm out front and I found it in the street two houses down . It blew a patio heater onto my Arenga but no damage to the palm . It is one tough palm! We are getting a break right now. Harry
