Can a Sabal Minor be grown successfully in So Cal?
sonoranfans replied to Neel's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI would investigate chamaerops, particularly mixes of humilis and cerifera would do very well there. They are better adapted to dry places(cerifera is a morocco native) than sabal minor which is a florida palm. Still you could grow sabal minor Im sure. Here is a link with some old(20+ years?) full size chamaerops. The cerifera blue is stunning next to the green.

Archontophoenix alexandrae with two spears / stuck spear issue – why isn't the older one opening?
mcfly01 posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHi everyone, I have an Archontophoenix alexandrae in a pot that currently has two emerging spears, and I'm looking for some advice/insights on what might be happening. The situation: The older spear (on the left) emerged first, but instead of opening, it remained unopened and bound. Part of it snapped, but the palm continued growing and pushing a new spear (on the right) right next to it. The question: Why did the first spear get stuck and fail to open while the palm pushed a second one past it? Is this normal? Thanks in advance for your help! - Today

Dug and potted Hedyscepe
DoomsDave replied to DoomsDave's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEThanks to all for the help and encouragement! I’m trying to fix the ill-conceived act of planting two Hedyscepes too far from the beach (about 20 miles). They just burn badly here and aren’t a good grow, so I’m going to try to dig and pot and sell them to someone in a suitable climate for them in all their glory. -
Sabal Palm
Harry’s Palms replied to Rhonda's topic in COLD HARDY PALMSYes , pictures are needed for a true evaluation. So many factors to consider especially if they are field grown palms . Sabal can take quite a while if they came out of the ground and moved. Harry

Archontophoenix purple crownshaft
Jonathan replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHey Tyrone, nice find! I've got a couple of Bangalows from seed that I collected at Peases Lookout, at about 900m, not far from Mt Dalrymple. Still just young plants in pots, so don't know whether they'll have much colour or not yet, but I do recall the mature palms in the area looked quite distinct from their southern cousins, which is why I grabbed a few seeds. I don't remember seeing anything like the ones you posted though...wild! Hopefully you found a few seeds? -

Tyrone replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI was out that way Jayce. That’s where these pics came from. I wasn’t expecting to see the purple crown shafts I was just looking to see if we could find any bangalows and we found these purple ones quite unlike any Bangalow I’d seen before. -

So What Caught Your Eye Today?
Palms1984 replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEIt’s a beautiful palm! I’ve never seen one (in person) grown outside in Southern California. I think it requires way too humidity to look good outside here. Although, with this being said I’ve seen pictures of some in Southern California, I think it would need shade under trees for humidity during the dry Santa Ana season (late September through April).

So What Caught Your Eye Today?
Palms1984 replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE😂 You may have read comments or stories of people in Southern California that live in ares where they get very strong, extremely dry Santa Ana winds. Even when palms practically sitting in water will desiccate and die. I’m not kidding when I say the humidity can go to less than 5 percent with extremely high temperatures. It’s really awful for the plants and people, also.

Four Calyptrocalyx that are cool tolerant
happypalms posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEFour new Calyptrocalyx in the collection that are cool tolerant, with so many calyptrocalyx varieties in cultivation, it’s no wonder they are such a beautiful palm. In the past I have killed a lot of Calyptrocalyx trying to find what will live in the cool of winter. I finally found some nice varieties that are great ornamental palms for the collecter. Taking low temperatures down to 2 degrees celcius, you can’t go wrong with this lot in the collection. You just don’t know until you try, they have lived in containers far and the yummutumune is planted in the ground with this being its first winter. Archontophoenix purple crownshaft
Jayce replied to Tyrone's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEHey Tyrone. I've seen mention that A. Cunninghamiana growing in the Eungella national park display the purple crownshaft quite like A. Purpurea. Are you out that way perhaps? -

Geonoma species showing good cool tolerance
happypalms posted a topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDEI will say this Geonomas are really starting to impress me in the cool tolerance range. Quite rare palms in this part of the world, but after getting my hands on a few different varieties they are proving to be very cool tolerant, not to bad for palms that are prized ornamentals. Cool tolerance is one thing they need to be to survive in my winter and grow well. Another issue is water they drink like a drowning fish. So if they are to live in the ground it’s going to have to be some pretty good soil amendment landscaping duties. And these are tube stock seedlings not advanced palms, so iam impressed with how well they take 2 degrees celcius Geonoma pycnostachys Geonoma look longivaginata sub sp vallensGeonoma atrovirens Geonoma bondaria -
