The more upright leaves makes me think Fischeri. I have a lot of them in my garden, Vasquez leaves tends to hang a bit. But that’s in my garden and not all gardens are the same!

Well written words, people hear the word licuala and think tropical water loving, not cool tolerant and down right hard to grow. Like you said they are over looked for some strange reason. They are fantastic container specimen palms. And the amount of different phenotypes available is staggering. I guess a lot of growers are distracted by other more popular palms. I say dont underestimate the licualas!

There are certain palms that are for sale that where once worth a lot of money. But sometimes they are not worth a lot of money. Anyone want to buy a rhapis palm!

Nice picture, there a palm to me that needs to be keeped clean and thinned out. I have seen some beastly looking clumps. Still a nice palm if kept in check, let it get out of control and it’s not the same beautiful well tended one that has that cultivated look.

It fuuny you say that people like or dislike Caryota mitis. I personally think they look pretty messy with too many trunks. My friends have a beautiful one that have five naturally spaced trunks. It looks awesome! I’ll post a pic from Halloween last year.

Here in San Diego I’ve grown many Dypsis decaryi in the 26 years I’ve lived here and always have watered them very often. I’ve never had one die. I guess I’ve been very lucky. There’s several very large trees in my neighborhood and the only problem I’ve seen on a few is the baterial problem which affects the fronds and eventually kills the tree.

You would have to post pictures of the plants in question to have us figure out what you have.

That one is over 25 years old, but it was in a container all those years only recently planted. The larger leaf picture is the same age as well yet it has 6 feet long petioles and not far of forming a trunk , so growing conditions do dictate growth. Get them in the ground! Also the other ones are the same age from an original purchase some 25 years ago, only now since I have gotten back into my garden they have really started to move on, water or lack of was the main reason for such slow growth.

Unfortunately, I don’t have a shady spot in the ground for it.😞. It will have to stay in a big pot for now. 😎

Great overview. I think a lot of people overlook Licuala because they assume they're difficult or ultra-tropical, but many species are surprisingly adaptable once you understand their water and drainage requirements. The diversity within the genus is what really makes them addictive-one plant can have almost perfectly circular leaves while another looks completely different. I also agree that their relatively slow growth makes them excellent candidates for greenhouse collections, where space is always at a premium. They're definitely a genus that deserves more attention from palm growers.

That's impressive. Iguanura isn't a genus most people would think of when talking about cold tolerance, so it's always interesting to hear real-world experiences that challenge the conventional wisdom. It sounds like the key was figuring out their moisture requirements some palms will forgive a dry spell, but others really let you know when they're unhappy. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's useful information for anyone experimenting with less common species. For people trying to identify unusual palms or compare species I have found https://botanapp.com/identifier/palms to be a great palm tree identifier.

This is the last palm that caught my eye at my Palm Society friend who lives a few miles from me. It’s a nine year old Licuala ramsayi. It may be getting a little too much sun.

This caught my eye at my friend’s house. He says it’s Coccothrinax barbadensis. It’s an 8 or 9 year old plant from a gallon. I remember when it was very small and it’s grown very fast.

Once the newbies get up and growing then it’s time for the other ornamentals. About 5 years and a few more shrubs and trees on the outskirts of the garden should do the trick. Richard

I get quite dry summers and very hot north west winds, you most certainly don’t want to light a fire those days living in the Australian. They do tolerate some dry atmosphere. Definitely create as much humidity as you can it helps regardless of the conditions in your climate. But in the ground not a lot of dry tips but my humidity rarely drops below 60 percent. Just add shade and water and they should improve with age.

do these require super high humidity ? I have one in the garden. The lighting is a mixture of bright shade part of day & filtered light. It's under canopy. I water it well but noticed the tips can brown easily. The palm is still small though. Thinking it was an acclimation issue since it came from Florida ( I'm in California where its more dry but the microclimate it's in, I try to boost humidity with watering often). Have you found them to brown tip easily ? Or maybe it's when they are just juvenile ?
