I have been asked to spread the word about the World Palm Symposium supported in part by the IPS as part of our research, education and conservation mission statement. Below I copy a letter from the Organizing Committee: Dear fellow palm researchers and enthusiasts! Abstract submissions and early-bird registration are now open for PALMS 2026 Singapore! We are now accepting submissions for talks and posters related to the following themes about palms: 1. Ecology and ecophysiology 2. Systematics, phylogenetics, and evolution 3. Biogeography, macroecology and macroevolution 4. Plant-animal interactions 5. Uses and conservation 6. Palms in the human landscape Hands-on workshops in palm propagation and collecting—plus exclusive field trips into Singapore’s nature reserves—are coming up. Join us and be part of it. If you are early career researcher or student, we are also excited to announce travel grants to help support you. For more information, check out our website: https://palms2026.sg Sign up here for news and announcements (e.g., workshop sign-ups and deadline reminders) or follow us on Instagram! Have you done any emergency preparations? Apparently it will go down to 0 tomorrow in Attica

San Diego Coconut Trees
SouthernCATropicals replied to SouthernCATropicals's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
There is certainly no place for them in ground, unless I took out a fruit tree in the front. I’m kinda over the taste of ice cream bean so that might be a candidate lol. I would definitely take on a Hawaiian coconut with a big coconut seed as well as a red spicada. Maybe I’ll look into ordering them like you in marchish. I’d keep them in big pots until they’re bursting out of them. I think I need more coconuts to better understand the different types like you said hah. Btw my insta username is the same, I grow other fruit trees.- 166 replies

UPDATE: Today is January 17, one month since I received the #5 Filifera from Vegas. I have attached photos of what they look like today. Two of them have snapped out of the transplant shock, while the other three are struggling.

Yes but nothing much for the west. Weather forecast says the lowest here will be 5 C.
-
None that fulfills all requirements: large garden, in a warm place and committed to water this beast every day the first 2 summers.
-
Just checked it out so beautiful it kinda reminds me of the Great Dismal Swamp This spring I will be planting some bald Cypress in a swampy area on our property

What is your current yard temperature?
Phoenikakias replied to GottmitAlex's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
'Etwas Schlimmes wird geschehen, das Böse kommt, wird nicht mehr gehen!' Hey @Than, are you aware of the new forecast? https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.newsbomb.gr/kairos/story/1708602/kairos-tsouxtero-kryo-xionia-kai-dynates-vroxes-pro-ton-pylon-neo-kyma-kakokairias/amp -
Sat all night in the low 30s but just above freezing here, frost on cars and sheets but none seen on plants (could be my timing with the coldest air being 4am and I'm NOT looking then lol). Hopefully no damage and the next freeze watches are out for the next one. Just out of those, but I don't buy it, I think the second one has been primed by the first and could be worse for me here at least. Hopefully the last one of winter, but I doubt it with Feb and maybe march having a chance.

Friday morning... wind was luckily not as bad as some had predicted. One thermometer on the north side of the yard had 40ºF (4.4ºC) and another had 39ºF (3.8ºC) briefly before sunrise. The more protected south-side backyard was a few degrees warmer. Then the cold 'sat' in the low 40s all morning as the breeze stopped. Over 17ºF's warmer this morning, but still brrr... Ryan

Once upon a dypsis baronii seed time
gyuseppe replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
my dear friends, I can't grow dypsis here, but I can grow the chamaedoreas!😄 -
Yes, that's what I thought too. Snow too. It survived light frost here with only the youngest leaflets damaged (but not the growing tips!). Surprisingly hardy. I'll probably donate it to someone from the expat community in Messinia.. 🥲

Just look at the latitude of Madagascar, no wonder they grow well here in my climate dypsis varieties! -
San Diego Coconut Trees
rockinrickyfox replied to SouthernCATropicals's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
i wonder if those kanoa hawaii nuts would be similar to your big one. from what i've heard most famous cocos we know of in the state are descended from what vacationers bring back from hawaii. i know kyle has experience growing them here and tolerating the cold. might be a cultivar worth trying out for future reference although i know you're probably out of space by now haha. im for sure going to take a crack at them in February i just want to wait for the days to get a bit longer. been a pretty warm winter so far.- 166 replies

Hi Jim I’m new to gardening and trying to grow a tropical garden. Is there a way to tour your garden. I also live in the Bay Area. -

Once upon a dypsis baronii seed time
Tyrone replied to happypalms's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Yep. Grows well done here in southern WA. Bit of a tougher grow up in Perth. They like the cooler weather better I’ve found. -
It was merely a grammatical correction. Genus not species.

Dypsis Decipiens Hybrids
ExperimentalGrower replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
I don't believe it creates a new species, just a man made hybrid. I saw that second pic and instantly 'baronii' popped into my head. Very similar look. -
favorite band/artist
conceptualizeme replied to PAPalmtrees's topic in OHANA NUI - OFF TOPIC SUB-FORUM
would suggest Noothgrush if you like doom; I sometimes talk to the drummer Chiyo also the obligatory Crowbar, Dystopia, Toadliquor, and Eyehategod recs I like to give out -
Honestly the Queens and Robustas in 9b and up parts of southern Texas often look almost as good as they do here in southern California minus the 10f wipeout that occasionally screams in from the High Plains

Beautiful part of North Carolina that’s for sure. The Black River further south (especially near Ivanhoe in Sampson County) is also another nice spot to check out on Street View. In that area exists bald cypress that are over 2500 years old.
