Help planting a Coccothrinax borhidiana
aztropic replied to Kim B's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
The borhidiana is probably my favorite Coccothrinax species due to its compact growing nature and extreme hardiness. Lately, I've been growing more of these from seed to add to the collection. 🌴 aztropic Mesa, Arizona -
What’s been germinating @happypalms

Hi Jack away I say!!! I get labels lost or mixed up, you do a tray of seedlings with only 5 of certain species and the one you put the label in does and you thought I will know which one it is, by looking at the same seedlings in that group. Argh but I put another group of seedlings with that tray. So your lost in the memory of time and it goes pear shaped. Rookie mistake we all do. But good on Dave for sending those seeds. One way to tell is have a look at the seed you can sort of guess that way. Richard -
In the dry part of the garden virtual tour

Australia is a beautiful country. Such a clean environment in my area. -
I think it will be fine. It looks like the damaged frond on the right in your last photo can be easily pulled out as well. Follow up the hydrogen peroxide with some fungicide such as Daconil and keep the area dry. You should see a new deformed spear push up but it might take a few weeks.

Thank you for the identification! I'm also told this is Round Island palm. I put a 7 gal Copernicia fallensis down at the end of that row. Eventually these will look good in the forground.

Pindo, Mule or Alfredii for front yard?
Harry’s Palms replied to SCVpalmenthusiast's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
There are private growers that can help you . I have met them here on Palm Talk. You may have to drive an hour or so but the experience is priceless. I met @DoomsDave here a couple years ago ( has it really been that long?) and made a couple trips to his jungle . He has very good knowledge and experience to share , not to mention some very friendly kitty cats that patrol his garden. Not like going to a nursery , or buying on line( not for me) . He has introduced me to some palms that I would not have thought about on my own . All of them are growing very well . The bonus is spending time with Dave , never disappointing. A few “gems” that came home with me. Harry Cyphophoenix Nucele ‘Dypsis Lanceolata ( now Chrysalidiocarpus) Rohpalostylus Bauri Cheesemania I have 5 or so Chamaedorea Ernesti Augusti that came home Dypsis Basilonga on the left and Chamaedorea Plumosa on the right. -
Hey all, here’s a new one. My Sylvester’s seemed to handle the 20F freeze this winter foliage wise with minimal burn seen. Yet one of mine had the spears die. I pulled Mushy spears out of an otherwise healthy plant. And now it’s just a hole in the top with no new growth visible. I did the peroxide treatment but if the growth point is dead then I’m guessing I’m going to lose this palm. What do yall think. Here’s some photos. view showing the overall plant mostly undamaged. center of the plant. zoomed in

So What Caught Your Eye Today?
Harry’s Palms replied to The Gerg's topic in DISCUSSING PALM TREES WORLDWIDE
Not palms but got my attention while watering the palms on the side of the house where my wife’s Tillandsia wall is . Tillandsia go hand in hand with the tropical effect to show off the jungle created by the palms. Harry First up is this guy . It’s been the companion to this Howea for years and is blooming for the first time. I do not know the names of these , but I have two of this variety . The other one has bloomed every year but this is a first for this one.. I have a whole bunch of these and give them away from time to time . looking very nice with a bit of Spanish Moss that has taken up residency with this clump. Harry -
Going to take a day trip down to Jacksonville soon.
Robbertico18 replied to Laaz's topic in COLD HARDY PALMS
Here in downtown Sav most of the queens have visible damage, but are already showing green new growth. The two planted right downtown on river street don't seem phased at all, neither do any of them that I've seen so far on Tybee island. So I'd imagine the Jax queens are doing even better -

Well , I thought I would join in the fun! Hijacking Richard’s thread with a bit of good news(bragging rights?). Not too long ago @DoomsDave sent me quite a few seeds of different varieties. I put them in containers with damp soil and perlite. Well today I took the lids off to check and found that the Dypsis Blackii had sprouted , at least 80% sure as the tags got mixed up a bit . It could be something else that is equally as interesting but I’m very sure they are the Blackii by the way I had the labels laid out . I am super excited. Harry there are 4-5 sprouts so far in this wee community , more on the way! -
Southern Hemisphere Growing Season 2025/26
Jonathan replied to Jonathan's topic in WEATHER / CLIMATE
25 degrees with 20mm of rain today, a nice start to autumn after a dry February. -
I'm just not feeling it. But this is probably the safest place in the country for it. There's not another one for miles. People are only buying super exotic stuff right now though so yeah you probably right.

https://ebay.us/m/26H5ZD Obviously y'all will get homey hookup prices and I'll kill the listings. One of the Burles is spoken for but I've got a lot more than I listed. Licensed and inspected. The most interesting thing is the giant pink princess philodendron. More to come.

That same area today. I just haven't had the heart to post photos before now. I haven't looked at the "before" photos until today. I will work on a more comprehensive photo documentation of the wreckage of our garden in the coming days. I apologize for the quality of the photos. That is not my strong suit but it certainly gets the point across. -
Anyone heading down from near the 57 with space for an e. Laurentianus? I can pitch in for gas money!

Why not grow orchids?

More Dendrobium speciosum ssp Pendiculatum in bloom. The garden is very fragrant with them in full bloom. -
Beautiful, Iwan.

DON'T plant it in full sun. If there is a spot in the yard with afternoon shade, that's where I'd plant it. Otherwise, leave it potted on east side of the house. Morning sun, up to 11AM for about 3 weeks. Then, add one hour of sun (12N, 1PM, 2PM, etc) for two weeks at a time. If it's root-bound, pot it up first and water ever day. Rain will never give a potted plant sufficient water.

Super tall Trachycarpus fortunei specimens in Southern Pines, NC

Yeah, clean or a one-year skirt. But as the get tall, they're tough to maintain. Outside of CA or FL hard to find someone experienced in trimming. -
