Looks almost like viral infection, they are super tough. But the heat you described and the timing of the leaves shriveled up would steer towards being dry and desiccated foliage from lack of water, the leaf with no dry edges doesn’t match wster stress, odds on the leaves won’t recover. That said the curling makes me think something in the soil like a pathogen, let them dry out they are super tough. Can the leaves be crushed up in the hand like a dried up leaf or are they still moist inside?

Thanks for this Ive got a very yellow, small Encephalartos whitelockii in a pot, and have some chelated iron in the shed. Worth a go! (unless its just got root rot or something)

Phoenix palms are one of worst for being poisonous in my opinion, even more so when they are dead and dried up, absolute killers. Iam sure they have been the vain of many a trip to ER in the hospital. There can be some dangerous plants in the plant kingdom and many have been used throughout history for such foul play. But look on the other side of the coin at all the medicines derived from plants. Iam sure a bit of tennis elbow is a small price to pay for a thorn in the elbow. There is a fern in Australia called bracken fern and oh my step on a dead stem of that one and see what happens if you can’t dig it out, not a pretty picture in about 4 days time with more than a needle required for removal of that one. Well it looks like it can be done with extra work, but to be honest those ones have pretty small crowns. Your own palm looks infinitely better. I prescribe to the right plant right spot mentality, so I don't think full Texas sun is ideal for Trachycarpus. Can you do it? it appears you can, but there are much better suited palms for full sun in Dallas. Here are examples of a couple of my own Trachycarpus. They get hand watered by me regularly, fertilized with PalmGain and are planted in the more damp areas of my yard. The first is on the east side of my house so gets shade after lunch, it looked great until sometime in July. All fronds were grown at this location. The second is another one that gets a lot of sun, with some late afternoon and early evening sun. Fronds all grown in situ. I don't see Trachys much in Houston, but when I do they tend to be in shady spots, I don't think that's a coincidence. They usually are decent green color unlike mine if they get enough shade and water. These two were nice and green in the months leading up to July.

I’m not home to take a current photo but overall this is the set up I have added to from completely open in the beginning. Roughly 300’ x 53’, although the backyard runs around 230’ x 60’ at the marsh. Intracoastal in the distance. Ocean a mile or two to the east. Being on the island I feel we struggle with adequate rainfall. Some size constraints due to width and I have run podocarpus the length of the yard and Bambusa gracilis for a large part. Only a live oak, mule and beccariophoenix Alfredii in the middle back portion of yard plus a Seabreeze bamboo and saw palmetto in the way back.

Yes, I think I messed up and used the same mix I dot for my other palms: perlite mixed with palm soil. Thus fast draining. I didn't it so it doesn't get root rot in the spring and fall. Thus I probably need to amend with more clay mixed in. The rocks I have on there are to throw off the squirrels from digging. Maybe I'll put more mulch instead of the thin layer I have on it now

Speed of growth and smaller crown size maybe if planted from smaller palms but you have a point

I have those too. Also, my neighbor kitty corner to me had a large windmill palm in the same sun. It had a 13ft trunk before it died in the Texas freeze

They may do decently with irrigation or afternoon shade. But why would anyone plant a Trachycarpus over a Sabal palmetto or mexicana in full sun in Dallas? Or Chamaerops cerifera if the space available is smaller?

Some zone 10 survivors at Disney... 2 Licuala grandis at the Moana area in Epcot. There were several others near the entrance but they are died.

I have two large (about 6ft) bougainvilleas in very large pots (I repotted from very small ones straight to very large ones few months ago). The medium is a mixture of local garden soil and acidic sandy soil with great drainage. I also added some peat and mulch on top. Temperatures reach about 100 F these days and humidity is low. The leaves look wilted so I started watering more often but I noticed zero difference. Few hours after watering or the day after, the medium is moist but the leaves still look like this. What could it be? The wind? I cannot spot any pests under the magnifying lense. They are in pots because the yard soil where they are is horrendous; mostly concrete from past build works.

For sure. Had an ultimate low of 20F, but there were at least 3 nights below 24F. It got a sheet wrapped around the trunk and spear area (somehow I managed to not stab myself) but no heat. Only green left following the freeze was the parts covered by the sheet. It lost a crown of fronds that was about as much as it is holding currently. So long story short, it has managed to fully recover its crown up to this point and from here on it'll be additional growth. I am very pleased with its performance this year!

Great choice! Although a very slow grower, it's well worth the wait..A very durable, compact palm, that fits right into today's smaller yards. Here's one of mine, flourishing in the Arizona desert. aztropic Mesa, Arizona
