I think mine has some watermelon traits. You can see some variegation in the crownshaft. Also, the petioles on mine are green, not the chocolate color one sees on some. There seems to be some variation in hookeri palms.

Mine has flowered 2 or 3 times now but no seeds yet. The spathe and inflorescence looked somewhat dwarfed. Will see what this year brings. Has a larger one now. Started flowering with 6 feet of clear trunk below the crownshaft last year. Planted out in full sun as a 3 gallon in May of 2016, so now 10 years in the ground. Has much more shade now since the gardens have grown. This picture is from September 2025. Good luck with yours.

Red spicata is great!! Almost fluorescent orange colors. This picture is from last year. Planted as a sprout in May 2016, so about 9 years in the picture. A bit bigger now.

I think you have the regular Pinanga philippinensis form. My little ones have a metallic sheen to the leaves and being so small in 4 inch pots, they have several suckers more than yours does. Mine is the compact form.

Looks like your bananas should be hitting their stride. Did the papayas make it through winter? I didn’t plant any but i had a number of volunteers that have outpaced my DCs.

These are all pushing out new growth now, FWIW. They likely won't look normal for a while but it appears that most of them might make it.

Price cut $75. I wanna move it before it's too big to ship. Corms also available 2/$30. Robust grower. Will need a lot of light and is well fed. I've also been giving it a soil drench of sns209 to keep the critters away. 1g pot. Pushing 3 feet now and feeding it with 20/10/20, cal mag and silica in RO water.

This area is on the same latitude as some extremely hot and dry climates. I dont think it will ever be a reliable climate for depending on timely rains and freeze/frost free winters for growing. To be successful you have to have intervention techniques, from as simple as an irrigation system, to as complicated as a complete soil overhaul and a conservatory or protection structure. If you have the money you can grow anything, but if you have that kind of money you just move to Hawaii lol.

I’m lucky to have been given a few seedlings of L sp ‘Large Mottled’ Alberto. We’ve had a very mild June so far, so it’s too early too tell how it will go in cool conditions long term but I’d suspect it would be similarly hardy to L dasyantha based on habitat. At the one leaf stage, it looks nearly identical to every other Lanonia I’ve grown from seed.

CA doesn't allow me to send plants to you in Long Beach unless I'm a Certified Nursery. I'm just a Backyard Grower. If I tell the people at the Inspection Station in Hilo that I'm sending a rooted plant to CA, they turn me away. Someday I may get seeds from my Mother plant, and these I can send to you. They are from Guyana in northern South America, so I don't know if your Winters are warm enough for them anyway.

I can’t believe the Met Office haven’t put out a red heat advisory warning yet. This heatwave looks to potentially be about as bad as it gets for us here. Shaping up for 3-4 days of 37C+ / 100F+ with a POSSIBLE peak of 41C / 106F… 24C / 75F minimum at Kew Gardens lol… Both ARPEGE and UKV have 41C / 106F plotted on there.

Im officialy throwing in the towel here. I dont have the time to soak an acre worth of plants everyday. It dies it dies. This area of the state is nowhere near tropical or anything of the sort. It's a desert with humidity. We only get rain from tropical systems and its cold af every winter. If I ever decide to grow anything again ill.move to a place where the stuff actualy grows.

Your little mysterious seedling has grown. At the moment it’s one of those lucky dips you get at the fair! Richard

The baggie method is a proven technique for germinating palm seeds. And in your case even better that it is proven, as all other attempts failed. Never give up on seeds until they are completely rotted. And it does look like the bench is getting full of seedlings in the garage, and I also suspect that the wife’s Tupperware cupboard is getting more room by the looks of the plastic container collection, I get the complaints from my wife about have you seen any containers there are some missing.😂 Richard

This is looking great. Even I haven’t had to water since maybe Feb! You’re still braver than than me, my latest palm purchases were Livistona chinensis and some Trachycarpus martianus. Nowhere near what you’re doing. This heat and constant rain is really pushing the growth around here.

Tough to see Tracy.. The unfortunate thing to me about the weevils love of canariensis, is that there are so many of them and that they are generally so large. I’m convinced that because of their sheer size they simply become weevil nurseries for months on end. Too big to deal with, especially if they’re on public land. So they just sit and infect everything around them. Pretty discouraging.

Check it regularly to be sure it roots in. Nudge the base; when it won’t wobble or wiggle anymore it’s rooted in!

Looks very Arenga or Caryota like at that early stage. If you tossed Arenga seed around I’d say that’s probably it. But yes, in a month or 2 once that first frond has unfurled you’ll have more certainty.

Kyle, I forgot to mention you should attend some of the next Palm Society of Southern California meetings for the auctions. There are always plenty of things people donate for the auctions. I have acquired many palms at those meetings over the years. I think based on your posts over the years, you know what won't survive in El Centro and have a pretty good idea of most of the genra that will either thrive or at least have a chance in your current home. Added bonus, you will probably meet people that have germinated a few things in their gardens that have extras at a meeting.... i.e. the backyard growers.
