Yes, I did get it from Phil back in February 2018, and you can read the label below. From my perspective this has been pretty fast growth given that this genus tends to be a smaller palm (compared to Copernecia, Pritchardia, most Brahea and Sabal, which are all fan palms). I should get a copy of Paul Craft's book as a reference as well as a few other palm books. I will definitely check out the Cocothrinax miraguama. I will have to post my other Cocothrinax from Phil about the same time. My other Cocothrinax specimens came from George Sparkman a couple of years earlier as I recall, but the photo records are my best resource on timing.

While the full longer range thoughts from Copernicus aren't out yet, ECMWF seasonal / longer ranges, peeking into the winter months, as well as thoughts from the NMME are out now.. Lotza of other thoughts on just how wild things are looking atm, ..and how wild things could look as we head forward.. Considering how much warming has occurred in the last 2 decades or so, on top of the rest we've seen since .....1877 ..whether one chooses to acknowledge it or not... to say we're entering uncharted waters w/ the direction this warm ENSO / El Nino cycle appears be heading, may be putting it lightly.. While everyone should start checking in w/ their trust worthy info sources regarding regional based thoughts for the winter ahead, here in this part of the world, Daniel Swain will be live on Monday for the 1st ..of what may be many... full court rundown on things.. Tune in if you can.. We may be a few months out from the peak of this event ..and the greatest influence it may have on our winter 2026 / 27 but, NEVER too early to be aware, and / or prepare. Tom, I never planted one, but I grew one from a 1 gallon to a 15 gallon, over maybe 2-3 years. I remember packing a bunch of thick clay in the 15 gallon pot - Only clay. Watered it relentlessly and it loved it. Eventually sold it. For me, that’s the secret out here. Heavy clay soil and heavy water in the summer.

I think I am most surprised by the relative speed of your butias' growth. They have always seemed slow to establish for me. The one butia I had in the ground (that I trunk cut and put in a pot after last winter), is growing faster in its pot than it ever grew in the ground. I hope all of your mules grow well...and that you never see an ox beetle again. I watched your video and losing that Sabal Lisa was pretty rough. Sorry you had to deal with that.

Your mule was pretty amazing Allen. I have really enjoyed many of your videos as well. I am only planning to protect for the first year or two if some nasty (by TX standards) winter weather is predicted. My first two winters here have both had some freezing precipitation, which is not the norm according to the locals. On the other hand, it has only been lows of around 23F and 20F. So I am hopeful I can get this established before we get anything too ugly. I know of a home pretty nearby that looks to have at least one mule in the backyard that are in the 6 to 8 ft of overall height range. From what I can tell freezing rain and 20F caused 40 to 50% from damage. It has recovered quickly though.

Let’s hope for better winters going forward! Statistically, we should have warmer ones lined up after these last few colder ones. Definitely go with the Mules, they’re great. Yes, the droopy one looks awesome. Sadly, out of the four that I have only one has the droopy characteristics. Seems to be a rare trait.

Another fine tour of Happy palms! So , is that a plumeria in the first pic? I wouldn’t have thought them to be deciduous in your sub tropical climate . Harry

Surprised the rostratas didn’t bloom This year as they all overwintered with no hiccups. Hoping next year they bloom up good.

Some good news the Alfie is pushing through it so it’s going to be okay. Going to be ugly for 2 years but I’m just relieved it didn’t miss a beat. That tree is tough as nails. Spoke with the county and they were shocked anyone would have cut it that way but the got it added to a list to be maintained by the owner only so this will hopefully never happen again. The Pritchardia and Pandanus are going full throttle and back to normal. My heliconia rostratas I transplanted to my rental have absolutely taken off and I got some ptychosperma salomonenses in pots here that I am hoping to get some size on and plant out when we move back or buy a new home. Will get some updated pictures.

Nice one, who needs patience when you’re a palm grower. Just plant em in the ground, my motto is if there is no frost in the garden or threat of frost, then the best time to plant anything is 20 years ago! Hot, cold, wet, dry to me it doesn’t matter. If the plant has survived these conditions in a container already in the collection then it’s fair game for planting in the garden, keep em coming Harry, there’s always room for one more palm in the garden, somewhere 🤣 Richard

An extremely tough plant capable of surviving some very harsh conditions, drought, fire and unbearable heat in summer. Growing around 1cm a year so a tall specimen is of a great age. There is a hidden beauty growing in the environment if you look closely, but at a first glance you just see a harsh environment that’s unforgiving to the weak. Yet in that diversity is a wonderful symbiotic relationship going on with the plants and animals, this is what makes the Australian bush so wonderful!

Better weeds than human pin cushion ! Harry

I finally got a palm planted this afternoon. I’ve been waiting for cooler weather but it ain’t happening so impatience won. I came home with this palm after visiting @DoomsDave a few weeks ago. It is one of about 5 or 6 palms I adopted. This one is just a bit of a push for my climate but I’m pretty confident it will be fine. I chose a nice spot that only gets sun after about 1:30pm and only for about 3 hours this time of year. As it grows , it will see just a bit more . Palmpedia says these like a warm tropical to sub tropical climate and like a rather sunny location. Digging holes in rocky soil with many mature palms sending out feeder roots is a chore , especially in 89f temperature! I dug out three fist sized rocks and chopped through a bunch of roots . There will be enough room in this spot for a few stems if it decides to clump( very likely). Harry It doesn’t look like much right now but in a few years, it will be looking great! If you are growing this species , post pics so I can dream!😂

I find that even if I look at them the wrong way I get scratched, stabbed, torn and bloody. Weeding around a young L australis is not work for the faint of heart, so mine are weed infested!

107 - 109F and sunny w/ some haze and humidity at 1:43PM on your first Friday of the final month of Summer 2026.. Should top out in the 108 - lower 110's later on.. Storms/ ..Not today ..here at least.. Looking at the weekend ahead / into next week? While it won't be as extreme as it has been, unseasonable heat and associated excessive heat warning we've been under since ........................... appears as though it will come to an end by Sunday ..Finally.. That said, if temps over perform, esp. come Monday, the weather service could tack on one more day. As it appears right now, temps. should get knocked back by Tuesday as the 4C high wanders back toward the Cen. / Southern Plains / Gulf States next week. While longer term thoughts from all the WX models remain far from consistent / all over the place / whatever you wanna call it ..as has been the case over the last couple weeks.. current thoughts are that the eastward re positioning of the 4C High forecast for next week should allow another ..dare i say ..decent.. moisture surge back into AZ ..More widespread than it has been of late at least.. Will that finally bring us here around the valley more than just the back to back, late night Cat. 5 Dust storm events we've seen lately? We shall see.. Been a pretty weird summer so far.. While the mountains / Rim north and east of town, and a good chunk of the Borderlands have seen pretty good rains so far this season, Rim / Mountains north and east of PHX: Tucson ..and the Borderlands... No way to get around the obvious across most of Cen. AZ atm.. At a mere 0 .46", PHX is currently sitting in 3rd place for the driest Monsoon.. While they're doing better than we are, the current total in Tucson is also below norm ( 2.41" = 5th driest ) Unlike what is being seen across many areas around town, compared to the airport down there, most spots around PHX are running about as dry ..if not drier.. than what has fallen so far a Sky Harbor. Couple good downpours in your tiny, individual dot of a backyard, located in some far corner of a much bigger area = doesn't mean squat / that it has been a good year. For most around the valley, so far at least, this summer has been leaving things ..pretty thirsty.. Will that continue as we head thru the rest of August / Summer '26, / into September / the Fall season / remainder of Monsoon Season ahead? = A game of wait and see.. Again, while there are still signals of wetter than avg. conditions tucked within most of the current WX model thoughts for the remainder of Monsoon Season, based upon what i have ..and haven't.... seen, thus far, i'm staying quite critical of any " uptick in rain chance " suggestions that keep flaming out right as they should arrive in the forecasts.. Getting to that time of year where what happens in the tropics will play a big part in determining how a years' Monsoon Season ends up.. Come October 1st? under the current trajectory? Gonna be A LOT of red faced people, doing alot of reluctant explaining if the second half of the season plays out like the half we've already traversed..

Not 100% sure, but that looks alot like a laurel oak to me. I've got a bunch of them on my property and the leaves look very similar to live oak, but if you hold a live oak leaf in your hand, the laurel oak leaves are slightly less stiff.

@SeaLaVie that property you have is amazing! With all that open space, I'd start planting a bunch of live oaks first and foremost. I've found that when grown in tighter spacing, they can actually fill in an area pretty quick. If they're planted 20' apart then you're not waiting for one tree to shade the entire area, which can take a lifetime. Instead each tree only needs to have a 20' crown and they'll all work together to shade a huge area. If you planted a bunch of live oaks, I'd bet you could have great shade and canopy coverage in 10 years. I'd also bring in a bunch of the mature sabal palms. Then you only have to wait ~3 years for their crown to grow back in and you've got mature palms. That'd give you alot more options in the future for plantings.
