  2. Besides Moon Valley Nursery which is exceptionally expensive, are there any other nurseries that ship and have mature palms. Im looking for mature 5ft Pheonix roebellinis, red abyssinian banana, ice cream/blue java banana plant, possibly some plumerias. I haven’t been very successful, most places in So Cal either don’t ship larger palms, or they only work with contractors.

    Saying goodbye to my palms

It is quite picky about the soil, but it is also rather cool tolerant. Do not let yourself misled by the reports in Florida A sudden and longer lasting cold spell than few hours may be more damaging, because the palms are caught with 'pants down ' that is in active growth.

What is your current yard temperature?

Rolling through the mid 60s at 9:44AM, Headed for ..Flirting with 90, perhaps?? later? ..We'll see. Suggested forecast high here in Chandler is 85 but, with wall to wall sunshine and temps already moving through the 70s in several neighborhoods around the valley, before 10AM, reasonable to think seeing at least a few 90 ( ..or 90+ ) readings by 3:30PM aren't off the table.. Again though, ..we'll see. Slightly toasty today regardless. As noted, early Feb. warmth hangs around thru at least Monday, before a potential cool down sets in as we head toward mid month as the overall pattern becomes less blocked, thus allowing some deg. of unsettled WX conditions to return to AZ ..and the rest of the west ..at least temporarily. We'll see if that equals any more rain / snow chances, let alone ..what would likely be.. the last opportunity for some mid to high 30s morning lows before the pattern flips again toward the end of the month. .. Flipping again = Is the current thinking at least.. Low desert spots locally aren't the only folks enjoying some great weather over the next few days either.. Once again, touring the point and click forecasts, many spots in S.CA will reach the 80s / flirt with 90F readings today ..and/ or tomorrow, before temps start a downhill slide over the upcoming weekend. " hot " February includes the " often misses out on such " winter " warmth spells " Bay Area spots like San Jose/ Los Gatos, Santa Cruz, and various spots near Monterey which could see highs flirt with 80, close to the beaches.. Not bad.. Today's side note: ..we'll see what today's thoughts suggest around 1PM but, .. Going with yesterday's, for the moment at least, While it weakens again, appears the P.V. may avoid diving into complete reversal / SSW territory.. **From the ECMWF Website ** If.. that is the case, that could factor into the mid /late month forecast.. Lengthy but Judah Cohen ( Posts weekly / bi-weekly blog updates on the AER website ) echoed similar thoughts on what may ..or may not.. happen w/ the Polar Vortex over the next few weeks.. https://published.aer.com/aoblog/aoblog.html As mentioned, We'll see what is suggested today..

    2025-2026 Florida Winter

Lol. Like it or not, I think that almost 100% of the population of this board (outside of the tropics) are "zone pushers" to some degree ... I know I am. I have a tiny Bismarkia planted that I have to protect 3-4 times a year). I can get more years out of it, till it gets too big. It's a gamble that sometimes can hold good for a decade or two, then you get burned in the course of one night. I just decided to keep on trucking as long as my finances or interests allow it. - Matt

You may already be doing this but they need to be kept dry. They sometimes take a few degrees below 35F to come on

By Saint Fiacre, 9 degrees in a pot, so the root ball must have frozen completely solid. That's amazing she's making a go of it.

    The Shrubbery Thread

@Merlyn did you ever endup growing Marlberry? I was curious if you had any experience with its cold tolerance from this cold winter. I've got some planted that experienced some pretty good cold this year with no damage. But I was wondering what their ultimate low tolerance is.

    Protected too good…

I discovered a fault in one of my Thermo-Cubes early this season. It wasn't very old so I've at times wondered about the quality / durability of these. I think I'll take it apart to investigate. The others I have are performing as intended.

I only use collected rainwater if I have to water them. Don't need to do too much extra watering with the Auckland weather lately. Thanks for the suggestion though, something to bare in mind.

Yep same here you can literlay see things are burnt where the wind was blowing on it but not on the opposite side. Like pothos vine and monstera burnt on trees where it was facing wind. Other side of tree it's fine still.

2026 Florida Palmageddon Observations and Damage Photo Thread

Looking around the yard, I'm convinced the wind driven cold was the biggest culprit of damage. Not palm trees, but I had z10-11 plants that look untouched under the roof overhang and also sheltered from the wind. Desert rose, cordylines, and rattlesnake plants look just fine. Desert rose flower still in full bloom.

Crazy what he’s growing in las vegas

Nice find. I’m pretty sure there are 10a microclimates in the Valley, where there is good cold drainage and urban heat island. Harry Reid airport doesn’t drop below 30 very often, and not in the lower 20’s since 2007 I believe. Huge difference from just over the mountains in Nye or Lincoln counties. I suppose the other side of the coin is the heavy watering a lot of popular 9b/10a crownshafted species would need in that climate. I think some Dypsis species from the drier pockets of Madagascar could be good candidates, like D. decipiens. You’d have to drive down to a nursery in California, though!

adonidia dried after 1 week vacation

Adonidia can react pretty dramatically to even a short dry spell indoors, especially in winter, and 10 days with dry soil is enough to crisp older fronds. The fact that it’s pushing new leaves is a very good sign, since palms won’t do that if the growing point is dead. I’d resist the urge to overcorrect now. Keep watering consistent, let excess drain, and maintain stable humidity without soaking the crown. Leave the remaining fronds, even if they look rough, until you’re sure they’re fully dead. Palms recover slowly, but steady conditions usually win out.

    2025-2026 Florida Winter

Crazy how the west coast of florida was barely affected beyond normal temps. These coconuts are in new port richey in pasco county well north of tampa. Untouched. There use to be a massive mango tree on the property aswell the trunk was 2ft in diameter or bigger tree was massive. They cut it down. No idea why. I took this picture 30 min ago. These are growing further north than people say is possible but here they are and still look amazing after all this winter has thrown at them.

    Heliconia Thread

I did nothing. The above ground growth is mostly dead. I'll trim them back in a couple of weeks or so, when I think the likelihood of frost is minimal. They'll be back in no time.
  20. I don't think you'll get enough growth out of in a year to make it worth your while. They aren't the fastest growing plant out there. The other issue is they start to put out new growth in late winter and if you get a frost it will kill it. By late winter I mean late Feb early March, here in Houston it stated in January. So you probably get frosts well into April or maybe even May. It will likely start regrowing much later in your climate but I would think you would have to be protecting it for at least a couple of months each spring.

    Saying goodbye to my palms

Beautiful species, grows fast and is not picky about the soil... However, there are very few in Kalamata.. if any. There must be a reason for that. Pietro says "the adult plants can resist to exceptional and very short lasting decreases of temperatures to -2 °C." On the 13d of January I had -2C for several hours.. I may give it a go if I find a large enough specimen to buy. I can't be bothered with more tiny seedlings.

Not sure about the salt content of your water but it’s something to look into. It looks to be an iron deficiency which accumulated salts in the soil can do

Sounds like me when people plant mature adonidia merillii as a landscaping focal point up here near Pensacola.
