Iam not to sure what gives such deep red, I do know it’s anthocyanins that cause the red. But some years I get a lot of deep red colour and other years lighter red. It could be temperature, moisture, heat, cold. Whatever it is we need more of it!

When I wrote seeding I did mean seeding indeed, must not be confused with seedling, no typo.

It’s pretty easy to see what makes a saintlucei so popular. You can’t go past that beautiful look of an accent palm, with a trunk that’s straight as an arrow and the arched leaves to the white crownshaft. Easy to grow with a little dry, cool tolerance. They love black sandy loam soil that’s free draining. Single plants will set seeds. Just another one of those Chrysalidocarpus that are an absolute winner!

Wow, good to know! I read it is the most evergreen among all the leucaenas, so I guess I shouldn't consider any of them.. so hard to find the perfect tree!

Wow thats such a deep red, mine is more of a variegated red.

It depends on kind of garden’s soil. If it is deep clay I would not recommend it. If on the other hand soil is sandy or loamy , it is a relatively fast grower. Here from seed to seeding it took only 5 years. But not resistant at all to strong gusts, it loses form quickly.

I haven't settled on an id for this specimen yet. It is blooming now, in summer which should be another clue. It is an attractive clean looking Aloe.

Thank you everyone for the feedback... I already have a brahea, Chamaerops and triangle. However, the other side of the planter, I'm thinking of removing the sagos (they clump too much now and it's a pain to keep cutting it back) and putting some privacy bushes against the fence. I wanted a small, slow growing palm in the center surrounded by other vegetation but since I almost never seen Sabal Minor in so cal, wasn't sure if it would even grow.

Yep such a beautiful tree deserves a beautiful home for many generations to come. Try and get a few palms into the botanical gardens while you’re at it, you just never know!

Unfortunately it is just that San Diego comes first as they expand habitat. As the name implies, their original habitat was South America. It wasn't long ago that they were still South of the border with s few incursions into Chula Vista and Bonita. My housein Carlsbad is immediately south of Legoland, across the canyon. Legoland was still flower fields when my wife and I moved to Carlsbad and the SAPW was not even a part of our vocabulary. Time and the weevil just keep marching forward.

Yeah, I'm definitely considering donating them to a botanical garden or some other public garden at some point. This is definitely a tree that deserves as much space and onlookers as it can get! I've heard the same, I think a lot of species in the family Sapotaceae tend to be recalcitrant unfortunately. I've previously tried germinating another species of Chrysophyllum and didn't have any luck. Hopefully you're able to find some viable seeds!

Washingtonia still reside in North America, whearas those other species do not, so its not the same argument. Native ranges shift over time, but a species that has gone exctinct in a given continent cannot have a shifting population/range.

Beautiful little palm, with a nice white backdrop should highlight for all to see from the street and make em go wow! It doesn’t matter where they are, you get a big impact statement for not a lot of trouble of growing.

Grows like weeds ..even here. Seed filled pods fly ...Everywhere.. during windstorms ( See this thread: https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/80400-flyin-weeds-the-case-of-a-trash-tree-leucanea-leucocephala/ ) Seeds will pop up ..pretty much any / every-where they land. ( Gutters, cracks between pavers / concrete slabs, cracks / nooks near home foundations. Wood is weak / branches break easily during big storms. Doesn't provide much canopy during the winter and will go thru a summer semi deciduous phase in June and July. Avoid like the plague..

I am looking for plan B trees in case my Kigelia drops its leaves again this winter. Has anyone tried Leucaena leucocephala in zone 9b? Does it retain its leaves after mild frosts (around 29 F)? I've read it grows super fast and the roots aren't very aggressive, so I am considering it.

By this logic, would you not conclude Metasequoia or camels are currently native to Nevada, since their fossils are there? This is a large speculative jump.
