Potted plantings give the hotels access to plantings that would be infeasible in a desert:

The next sets of photos come from the walkway around the pool at Mandalay Bay:

Phoenix canariensis and Phoenix dactylifera in a more natural environment - over-trimmed but no leaf spot:

Chamaerops humilis looks a lot better in the desert as well:

Trachycarpus fortunei is possible, but needs a lot of shade and water.  It looks bad when exposed to direct sun, especially next to its more xeric relative, Chamaerops humilis.

Butia odorata can look good in the right conditions.  Morning sun and irrigation seem to put the odds in their favor.  The first two photos show specimens that look OK vs. the third photo where a lot of the fronds are fried.  Rhapis humilis seems to be OK with a shaded environment and irrigation as well.

Cycas revoluta seems to do OK in this environment. Given that cycads are generally more tolerant of dry conditions than palms, it's surprising there isn't a wider variety used at this location.

Bamboo can do well with irrigation:

Artificial palms, cycads, and bird of paradise compliment the indoor spaces:

A great amount of care has gone into selecting and siting the palms and other plants. Great to see, especially the focus on xeriscaping rather than trying to make a jungle in the desert. Still looks very lush in a lot of the photos. I've only been to Vegas in December and way back in 2012, but I would imagine September is a great month to go for plant lovers.

There must be some world class landscape architects in Vegas with all the hotel and casino money. I can't find anything on the architect for Mandalay Bay, but there are tons of design firms specializing in low-maintenance plantings like Sage Design Studios. Good use of plantings for creating masses/textures against stucco and concrete and to emphasize focal points like entryways or signage
