On the way back to the PNW from Las Vegas I stopped by in Beatty. It must be the northernmost location of palms in Nevada but only barely, just a few tenths of a degree in latitude higher than the palms in the Moapa Oasis by Lake Mead. The warm temperatures of Death Valley right beside it must provide an inlet of warm air and hills to the north block cold air from entering. It's very interesting to note the sudden vegetation changes as you leave town north into the Basin and Range; after you cross the divide/hill north of town the creosote bush suddenly switches to sagebrush, and one spring day I saw my car's temperature fall 20 degrees in 10 minutes going north.

The last stand is planted at a casino at the north edge of town but I didn't get photos of that. Whenever I drive 395 I always wave hello/goodbye at Beatty and the subtropical climate to the south.

Similar thing going out of Vegas to the NE, the last town in NV is Mesquite which is very low in elevation and hotter/lower than Beatty even though it’s approximately the same latitude. If you keep going up the road to St. George UT there are still tons of palms. But if you keep going beyond that, there is a particular bend in the freeway that goes around a point in a mountain, before the bend it’s creosote bush etc and after the bend, bam, it’s sage brush, it’s a very abrupt transition.
