Additional cold hardy palm species to discuss? 1 2

Just noticed that Fairview has a number of palms rated zone 8b or colder that I had not contemplated until now: Trithrinax brasiliensis var. brasiliensis , Wodyetia bifurcata, Thrinax radiata, Sabal miamiensis, Livistona benthamii ‘Golden Form” , Sabal mauritiiformis , Brahea moorei, Dypsis decaryi, Dypsis carlsmithii, Chamaedorea costaricana, Ceroxylon ventricosum, Ceroxylon quindiuense, Brahea sarukhanii , Brahea dulcis (including a blue form). Any thoughts on any of these? I suspect that many are not as hardy as this nursery asserts, but some likely are. Haven't seen much discussion of most of these though-- so here's the chance to get talking!!

Hi, glad I found this site. I just moved into central Fl a new one story home with nothing more than builder stuff. I have 3 areas that I want to plants grouping of palms. 1 rear of home full sun group of 5 they will be near a screened pool and have solar panels so need to keep the hgt in this grouping at 20-25' max. we were thinking a 2-3' CT Sylvester as one of this group. 2 rear of home full sun group of 3 can be taller. maybe a Washingtonia as one 3 in front of the house on north side partial shade a group of 3. least important area we spend 90% of our time in back areas 1 & 2 Just not sure which species will look good together, we …

May be a good topic to touch on, at least in the U.S. temps are on the rise! New to planting palms or an old head that maybe just planted a palm for the first time in a few years, good to touch on the basics. Any palm Sabal family, windmill family, butia, Jubaea etc etc. summer is when we can make up for some winter damage, setback, or at least slow down. What’s everyone’s watering schedule look like?

Butia underappreciated for cold hardiness? 1 2

I've been noticing that after this recent freeze CIDP are all cooked, as are most Washingtonias, barring the most filifera dominate hybrids. Yet at the same time the few Butia I know that grow around here still have green leaves. Some have drooped since the freeze, but they generally look a lot better many other palms. Here are a few recent photos from around here that I've taken to illustrate what I mean. These all made it though the big freeze of 2021 with no protection too, in what's probably the coldest part of the San Antonio area.

Most of us are aware there is a [(B X J) X Q] but is there a [( J X B ) X Q]? I don't think Patric does this cross, anyone else? And if so how does it look compared to a [( J X B ) X Q].

Cold hardy dypsis 1 2

We need a comprehensive list of cold hardy dypsis, and a list of dypsis that just wouldn't work in the cold so we don't wast time trying. I am going to give this a shot with this thread. Stuff that's already proven itself: 1. dypsis decipiens, 22F, actively grows in the 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 9, 14-17 - Central Florida? 2. dypsis baronii, 28F, grows fast in 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 16, sheltered locations in 14, 15, 17 - Central Florida? 3. dypsis ambositrae,27F?, grows fast in 45-70F range - Norcal Sunset zones 16, sheltered locations in 14, 15, 17 - Central Florida? 4. dypsis onilahensis, 27F? seems to grow in 55F+ range …

A few pics of my front yard, focusing on a couple palms (Butia capitata, Trachycarpus fortunei), + large yuccas, large agaves. The agaves are about as tall as I am, the yuccas mostly taller lol. The front garden view shows trunks of tall T. fortunei and a large Yucca schottii in background, with blue Agave parryi in front, and A. salmiana var. ferox behind (large, dark green).

The great Sabal mexicana experiment... 1 2

Tonight, the temperature is set to fall to an unseasonable 23F...I am purposely leaving my Sabal mexicana unprotected so I can gain some data on it, as cold hardiness data on this palm seems to be sparse. I will post results, but I'm guessing it'll be fine..this is the first of many experiments I'll do with this palm;)) I'll keep everyone updated, this should be interesting!!

Which animals are palm lovers in your area? 1 2

During our warm humid summers we get lots of wildlife at our home in rural eastern Oklahoma. Our 5 acres are mostly wooded and we see lots of deer, gray foxes, racoons, opossums, turkeys, as well as an occasional eagle. With all of the large and small creatures in our woods, we have a few that seem to like palms almost as much as I do. Like praying mantis:

The current status of my palms up front right before the cold snap on thanksgiving. Chamaerops fully defoliated and pulled on 2 trunks but put out seed in April. Livistona fully defoliated as expected and the cerifera got sick on some potting soil but bounced back in the ground but is slow as molasses. Will be updating as fall and winter progress.

Newly added Sabal Uresana.. 1 2

So excited! I finally picked up a Sabal Uresana from North Texas Cold Hardy palms. This has been on my wish list for some time.. and I had an area saved for a large sabal that has been sitting bare for a number of years now. The spot where i planted it was a toss up between a Mexicana and Uresana..as Mexicana seems to do well here... It will be interesting to see how well it will tolerate our dry winters. It seems all of the reports on cold damage and hardiness come from humid areas around the country... the one thing that interests me is it is native to an area that is fairly close to NM..so perhaps at least some of its growing conditions will be similar. Its…

Queen Palm Planting 1 2

So today I picked up about an 8ft queen palm (syagrus romanzoffiana) from HD for about $50. She's just barely fitting in my house as is. I am in 8a, and while I know this isn't the best cold hardy palm, I wanted to give one a try my very hot south facing back yard mostly because they are fast growers and look beautifully tropical. I plan on leaving it in the nursery pot this fall and winter and planting in early spring after frost. If she's going to have any chance of making it long term its going to be planted in my back yard. It being south facing, very hot in the summer and warms first and quickly in winter with no trees around to shade it …

Jubaea x Syagrus growth in 5 1/2 months 1 2

Hello All, In the spirit of keeping the end of summer chat lively, I thought I would post about my Jubaea x Syagrus that went into the ground here in Houston back on March 14th. I obtained it as a strap leaf plant from Patric in March, and when planted just had one pinnate leaf opening, and a base of the plant no thicker than a magic marker. Since then the palm has thrown pinnate leaf upon pinnate leaf and the base has fattened up to the thickness of a small soup can. No amount of humidity has seemed to bother this guy at all, nor has the Jubaea blood slowed it down at all. This hybrid has actually grown significantly faster than my two Butiagrus hybrids that wer…

The life of my Phoenix Theophrasti 1 2

Planning to chronicle the life of my Phoenix Theophrasti in this thread for those who are interested. I received this specimen from TCHP two years ago (fall of 2018, if I am not mistaken...) when it was about 21" long and had a small trunk of 1.75 inches. I am guessing its the green variant but TCHP can probably tell me more about about the origin of the seed batch. Frankly, I was not impressed with how it handled the first winter. I pulled a spear pull and it lost most of its leaves in a fairly mild winter (I don't think we even went lower than 25F that year). I basically left it for dead (no watering or any sort of care) and would have removed it had I not fo…

Newest palm from indoor box store. This will be the last one for this year going in the ground. I’m guessing I could get two clumps out of it. Not root bound at all. All planted and was very easy since the roots where not that full or deep. Was able to make, two clumps. Same palm clump different angle. Second clump. Should be hardy to 15F with protection, but the taller leaves will slowly die off in the next few years. New leaves will be much more shorter, wider, stronger than this greenhouse grow one, but with only 3 hours of sunlight I may be dreaming.….below 15F it curtains!

Texas Tough Plants Nursery & Mail Order. 1 2

Howdy, I had a plant nursery in Texas for a decade until 2010, called CollectorPalms. I have considered restarting with “Texas Tough Plants” ; lots of native plants and ones that do well here and similar places. Right now it’s still a dream, but I have the availability to get it up and running in a year. I have experience growing & shipping small to large palms. Others, I may need some input. Why, I think it’s needed, it’s difficult to get certain plants. 10-20 years ago had a lot of good nurseries that are no longer... they retired mostly. Also the recession of 2008 hurt a lot of nurseries. I also have no local competition. No other cool Nurseries. …
