I'm pretty sure my Royal Palms died...
by sandstorm- 8 replies

We have several royal palms in our yard and I think that this past winter killed over half of them. We are relatively new homeowner and they were here when we purchased the house. This past winter in Central FL (Brevard County) had several days in a row when the temp was not out of the 30's. About 8 or so of our trees now look like nubs. The center piece broke off and the top portion of what is left is mushy (like it is rotten inside). Could we cut the tree down to where it is solid and would it grow back from that or are they a total loss? Thanks for any information - Sandy

Update on freeze damage

I am here to show some updated photos of the sylvesters that were damaged in the mid to low 20s for multiple nights without protection. Tomorrow I will post a standing up photo of the two that I only showed from the crown. What do you guys think? Still looking pretty solid since they are green and the crown fronds don’t look too bad? Definitely showing much more yellow and brown after the weather came back to the 60s.

AAAAA More data

At the risk of sounding like Bossy Bob...there's a lot of Chatty Cathys on this thread. Let's keep it about the freeze data...whoever volunteers to edit this work someday will have to sift thru less BS if we keep it to the point. Clever, witty quips are unavoidable(since this is a comedy club as well), as well as comments and observations pertinent to the subject. Also, some are assuming we know how cold it was, what size the plant, etc so please be complete...I'm assuming that incomplete data will be edited out, so you're wasting your time sharing incomplete data. We have one chance to get this right, so lets not bugger it up Don't forget, there is a weather threa…

I have about a dozen of these, most are in five gallon pots, all were exposed to three nights of 24.8 F (-4.4 C) and a fourth consecutive night at 27.8 F. No white frost.

It's not a palm, but everyone loves these things including me, which is why I felt a tear in my beer when I took this picture. It was exposed to three nights of 24.8, and a consecutive night down to 27. F, no frost. Baby ones nearby died outright. Sob!

Just wanted to share some interesting data from my nursery. I had a 15g Pelagodoxa henryana 5' -6' tall in my shade house, right next to two Joey altifrons. The Pelagodoxa henryana died (along with 15 1gs) but my Joey palms survived. I don't understand this as I thought the Joeys would be lost as well. They survived a low of 29F and probably 10+ days of cold weather. I'm really shocked by this.

Still working on the temp numbers, but 16 out of 18 days below freezing. Most days 12+ hours below freezing, rebounding to mid-40's. Official lows in Madera and Fresno in low 20's. Some frost every day, but nowhere near as heavy as normal 28-32F freezes. I measured mid-teens F at 18" in one part of my yard. OOPS... Forgot to bring these in. Back to Home Depot! In a ~30g tall terracotta pot next to house, some protection from eves and surrounding Canna. 10" pot size. This had been uncovered during the Dec 2006 freeze (~24F) with no damage and was unprotected the first couple of days of this freeze (recorded 24F nearby). I started throwing a heavy blanket…

OK... so this is a dinky seedling still with 'strap leaves' though most recent leaf starting to show a bit of 'faness' to it. fully exposed in open area to 27F for 5 hours plus no frost. Plant killed. Yikes! Second plant, in a raised planter, right next to a seedling Archontophoenix purpurea that was killed outright, shows burn on all its leaves... but will be OK.

Cold damage in North Brevard
by Jimbean- 7 replies

I have different accounts to exactly how cold it got here. It seems that the temperature dropped to around 23F to 24F in Port St. John. I am sure GSN could add to this if he wishes to. Note: this cold damage is very unusual for the area; Port St. John is roughly the equivalent to either Sarasota or Ruskin for those of you on the west coast of Florida. Pseudophoenix sargentii: Ravenea rivularis: Ficus aurea (defoliated): Ficus benjamina (defoliated):

I have no idea why this plant was alive without the freeze, but it looks perfect after the freeze as well. The temps were 27F, but the palm was below canopy. Gary

This was its 3rd winter in the ground here in Myrtle Beach, zone 8b. The first 2 winters it really didn't get tested as temps were basically in the 9b range. This past winter it went through freezing rain and a couple dips to 19F unprotected. First pic is before the storm, 2nd is the aftermath of the ice, and 3rd is the recovery pic from today (4/7/22).

Dictyocaryum lamarckianum

Given the freezing temperatures on the east coast and south U.S., I thought I should update some information on the January 2007 cold in California! I had grown this seedling Dictyocaryum for two years, it had four leaves and was a very slow grow, but put out a new leaf each year! It was declining with the cold we had before the freeze, but the temperature of 29.5F in the yard for 3 hours really finished it off. It died within a month after the freeze. This isn't the best microclimate for the palm - another part of the yard received 31F for about an hour, but the area where the Dictyocaryum was growing had a 50% canopy cover that provided good light for the palm. W…

Thoughts on a Sylvester post freeze
by PoolPalm_AB- 7 replies

HI all - wanted to get some folks thoughts on a Sylvester date palm that I planted about a year ago around a new pool in north Houston. Before winter hit, it looked like things were going well and tree was getting established. Then came winter... coldest we've seen in the past decade here. All my palms which were planted at the same time last year took it pretty hard.... lost a lot of leaves on my 3 mule palms but they've come back strong and green. My two Sylvesters took it the worst with both basically losing all of their leaves. One has started to come back (attached a picture and you can see the green crown coming out). The other is not looking good and this is…

Syagrus X Juebae
by Gallop- 6 replies

I have 2 Syagrus X Juebae growing in ground for 2yrs. Both had gone pinnate this past summer. They survived last winter w/ overhead protection. In the low 20s for many days. They pulled through OK. This year no overhead protection and saw low 23F or so with heavy frost. Within a few weeks they went into rapid decline 1 plant spear pulled the other doesn't look to healthy it might make it ,we'll see. I'm coming to the conclusion these won't make it here in Pensacola Fl. it's to bad they are such a neat palm, they look quite different at an early age than the rest of my hybrids. On the other hand both my JXS took the last 2 winters like a champ.

3 gallon plant in very open area of my backyard was covered with a bucket during this cold event, with 29 and 31 lows. It came out looking a little less happy than going in, but still looks pretty darn good!
