What to know about Vietnam Endangered Palms.

Next week, our hardy palm enthusiasts head for Vietnam. I can't make it this year but it doesn't keep me from learning more about the critically endangered palms in Vietnam. Vietnam’s vegetative biodiversity has been severely impacted by decades of war, rapid industrialization, and illegal logging. While the country has successfully increased its total “forest cover”, much of this is compromised, consisting of monoculture plantations (like acacia or rubber) rather than rich, biodiverse natural forests. The damage” in Vietnam is no longer just about the quantity of vegetation, but the quality of the ecosystem as well. Current problems include:· …

How to get involved

Hello everybody! I have been a long term member of the IPS and Palmtalk and I really think this is an incredible organization, and I have been wondering how I can do more as a member. I live in areas where it’s difficult to get involved with local chapters, but are there other ways I could volunteer for the IPS through volunteering roles I could do from online? Again I really love the IPS and as someone who studies biology with a focus in tropical horticulture I believe a lot of my goals align with the IPS and I genuinely believe it to be a wonderful organization that I would love to get involved with!

https://www.palmtalk.org/forum/topic/82089-data-base-for-the-journal/ This thread touched on parts of what I've thought would be a good discussion for the new year. I come here as a new guy to the societies (couple years) but 20 years ago I first germinated Canary Island Date palms in an unused reptile tank in a closet. Hit the hobby brakes with baby twins I am 55 this year and have teenagers so always looking ahead. Thinking of advancing the hobby for the next generations that we wish to care for our mature palms. The Palms Journal may have outlived its life as a paper -borne identity but it’s evolved a little bit. Time for the next steps sooner or later righ…

You all did it!! $25,000 was raised for Ravenea louvelii. As Conservation Chair for IPS I want to thank every one of you for helping save this remnant palm population. If our palm people had not stepped up, the situation in Madagascar might have become bleak. We will keep you posted on what Mijoro and his team are doing.

Palms journal - printing error vol 69(3)
by mnorell- 1 follower

I received my Palms journal in the mail yesterday and when I opened it last night lo and behold something was wacky with the pagination...after looking more closely I see that the outer printer's signature (i.e., first 8 pages and last 8 pages of the text stapled inside the cover of the magazine) consists of a duplication of one of the interior signatures (p115-122 at front and 139-146 at the back), so lots of info is missing, including table of contents and much of the article on Colpothrinax cookii in Mexico, etc. Has anyone else noticed this in their copies? I'm assuming it's a goof on the whole run...if so, I wanted to raise attention to it so the problem can be …

I received the hard-copy this week and while the address was correct (which is why I received it), the actual name was someone else's. Did anyone else notice the same problem, and is this a problem with the IPS database or something else. My profile seems to be correct on members.palms.org, though I see no address filled in there. -t

New Growth and Yellow Tips on Them.
by Tim B- 0 replies

Hi and thanks for input earlier. I'm beginning to think this is pretty close to having kids, but mine are raised. How do you distinguish over/under water, nuts, and all of the above? I have yellow, brownish tips on a potted Pygmy. It's only 2 most since started feeding 8-2-12 PalmGain fert. Is it something I'm missing or does it take longer? Since feeding going nuts in growth. Do you think like mag, iron, or bor deficiency? Thanks, TimB

Data base for the Journal
by Phoenikakias- 2 replies

I am a recent IPS member and admittedly the IPS journal 'Palms' (Principes) is a treasure of information, especially articles of local botanists on their native flora are very interesting. Just to mention a couple of them as examples, one on Arenga in Thailand and another on Guihaia in China. To my disappointment though I found out that an electronic index in the form of data base is available only for a small part of journal, all old b/w issues and most of the colorful ones are still missing from the index, and a reader searching for a particular topic, has to scroll through the individual index of each one of the older issues (after the whole issue is downloaded in pd…

Hello! I used to see in the past that there were T-shirts, hats and such available on the Palms.org website. But now, that section seems to be gone. I was wondering if there are any leftovers somewhere, like the bumper sticker or License Plate frame. I would love to actually have one. This is a longshot, but would love to represent and show my support where I live. Thank you! Brian

I received an email asking for my mailing address for the paper copy of Palms. I had let this lapse once in the past. I can't reply to the email and I'm unable to login to the mail website. Any suggestions for getting my address to the "Powers that Be" at IPS? Thanks! Leonard Holmes

Can anybody recommend where to find my closest chapter? Or contact methods if you happen to know where it is? I realize it will likely be a ways distance. I live in Southern Utah, and would like to join in the festivities at some point in time. Vegas? Coachella Valley? Phoenix? thank you.

Affiliates Post

I see the large number of new Affiliates posts, which I think is great. A few questions if I might ask. What defines an affiliate? Is this a contractual relationship? If so, what is in it for IPS, for PT, and for them? Are affiliates bound by the same terms of service as the rest of us? Have they been apprised of, and agreed to that, formally? How can we, the average members help this program to succeed?

More Changes at PalmTalk
by Ken Johnson- 3 replies

IPS has been working on the business end of PalmTalk for a long time trying to make sure it operates smoothly and efficiently. The moderator had been working during this time trying to iron out a proper business contract. As I understand it a new contract has been drawn up but I have not seen it. Is anyone else curious about seeing it? IPS, as I understand it, now has a more firm grip on PalmTalk and this is a good thing. We want PalmTalk to be secure and in place forever. It may take some time to figure out exactly what we have gotten ourselves into but if we could all understand the contract it may give us some information so we can help if needed. I hope we ca…

The minutes of the last BOD meeting in Peru have been uploaded to the palms.org site. Apologize for the delay, there was some back and forth discussions and I wanted to make sure I was receiving the approved minutes from Susan Hubble, the recording secretary. I'll talk to Dean to see what format is best to upload here. Tim

How Transparency and Collaboration Works with Accountability to the Membership 1. Board publishes issues under consideration with committee and committee chair to which it is assigned, and where to send comments. 2. Board allows a 14 day comment period 3. Committee chooses a solution, sends solution to BOD in the form of a motion. Committee publishes committee notes, non-accepted alternative and proposals, etc. Note - Committee motions generally do not need a second. 4. BOD publishes meeting agenda to the membership 30 days prior to meeting, with all included documentation, such as written proposals, and other documents relating to…

Now that Jim Cain got away from us, God rest his soul, how will his seat be filled? Will an appointment be made at the Biennial? Will it be left open until the next election? How is this usually handled and what do the by laws say about it? Inquiring minds want to know.

I confess I was horrified. I realize that I am possibly the newest member of this society and so not a member of long standing or reputation, but I feel compelled to say something. In my career I have worked with a number of commercial and public bodies to develop and execute digital strategies. In many of these cases I have helped draft and deploy terms of service for users/members. I have to say that the ToS on PalmTalk is the most onerous I have ever seen. When we developed the ToS at the BBC, we had armies of lawyers go over our drafts and never did we see anything so bad. The worst portion is this: By posting Contributions to any part of the Websites, or …
