Mold on my L. Chinensis trunk
by Keys6505- 16 replies

Can anyone tell me what this is? I can't really see the trunk from the main part of my yard so I didn't notice this until today when I climbed into the bed to clean up. We had about 3 months of 100 degree temps and no rain followed by rain almost daily for the last 3-4 weeks. Is this just some kind of surface mold or something worse? Is hitting it with a copper fungicide a good idea? Tree has been relatively healthy other than defoliation after Palmageddon and the older fronds yellowing.

I wanted to share a couple of pics I took today of some Rhapidophyllum hystrix seeds from different areas of the Southeast. Of particular interest are the very large seeds, which actually come from a cultivated palm in Gainesville, FL. Of the wild-collected seeds, the ones from Randolph County, GA are significantly larger and darker than the others, followed by Chambers County, AL.

Two for one. Have you ever done this?

I lost several smaller needles last winter after five or six different snow and ice events, with my lowest low being around 11F. I was able to save some needles that spear pulled, but some lost their main trunk/growth point. They will take so long to recover and grow large enough to look good again that I dug some up and replaced them (with other needles and some aucuba japonica). I had the idea to pot up two of the needles that lost their main trunk together in one pot. My thinking was that with multiple side trunks recovering in the same pot, it might grow back into something decent looking faster than either plant would individually. Perhaps root competition will hinde…

Ponytail Palm Problem

Hello, I’m hoping someone may be able to identify the issue with our Ponytail Palm. We keep this guy outside about 10 months, and move inside sometime in December through February. It’s grown very much over the last year and a half that we’ve had it, and we repotted it in April of this year. Everything had looked great until we noticed something looking like yellow and brown burning on the leaves. See photos below… I can’t figure out what is wrong here. We have had quite a bit of rain in our part of town the last 40 days or so. It’s weird, because areas around us have not been too far above normal rainfall, but we’ve had close to or over 20 inches of rain during that …

Time flies and I can't believe it's been over 10 years since visiting and getting some palms at Gary's Nursery in New Bern . Below is a picture of Gary's biggest Birmingham the last time I visited there in February 2012 . I need to get back there and get an updated picture of his palms , and maybe a few palms too . Will I should've stood further back so as to get the whole palm in the picture .

Time to trunk cut? 1 2

Looking for some second opinions here. I have two trachycarpus waggies that are planted on the east side of my home. The smaller of the two is thriving after having to be covered five different times this winter due to heavy rain events followed by snow/ice and temps below 20F. The larger of the two sitting just 15 ft away didn't fare as well, despite being covered in the same manner as its smaller neighbor. It spear pulled about a month ago. I have been giving a little bit of hydrogen peroxide once every week to 10 days since then. After past spear pulls that was enough to get the job done. This time though, I had another spear pull on me yesterday. Given this latest spe…

Yesterday I got this Latisectus x Waggie Hybrid. A friend got a few of these from Jeff St Gelais. My friend has a older one and it looked very nice. Anyway I have never had a Latisectus nor a hybrid until yesterday. I've read not as cold hardy. Was wondering about growth rate, size etc. I'm sure as a hybrid with a male Waggie it will have a different characteristics. Since im in 7a it will become a house plant for a months out of the year. Thanks for any info.

Palms for the high desert

Hello all, I was wondering if anyone grew palms in the high desert zone 8b ish. I'm about 4500 ft elevation, summer highs about 105f and winter lows to about 15f, but usually in the 30s. I'm considering the following for starting a grove of palms for edible fruits: Washingtonia filifera - california fan palm Sabal Minor -palmetto Serenoa Repens - saw palmetto Phoenix canariensis - canary island date Butia Capitata - jelly palm Any critique about the assortment would be helpful. The site would be a source facing slope with good drainage and sandy soil. Thanks.

My bragging wasn't all in vain .

I bragged that this poorly dug Minor would show growth in three weeks and I posted about it on July 4th . What actually happened was that the poorly dug minor that was growing under my Birmingham didn't permit me to get a good shovel around it , and I just had a few roots , but I cut off most of the fronds and potted it up and put a plastic bag over it to keep it at around 100% humidity expecting it to start growing quickly because of my bag method . Then the spear pulled and I thought that one day I might see growth from the center or it would die , but instead I just noticed growth coming off of the side of the plant . Below is the July 4th picture and…

Oregon Coast Palm Experiement

Just writing out some of my thoughts. I noticed that Lincoln City, Pacific City and parts of Seaside fall under 9A designation. Would it be feasible to guerilla plant a few experimental palms around those areas to confirm any 9A long term viability? I know by looking at some of the Cordyline australis's (australii? australisies?) in those parts that they seem to grow large, full sized trunks indicating some hope... Just curious if anyone else has had this thought and what plants you would like to recommend? (In other words, can we somewhat replicate Brookings OR as far north as seaside?)

Cold Hardy Compliment to Palms

I wanted to share my success with these Pink China (Colocasia esculenta) elephant ears to compliment my cold hardy palms in Zone 7A Northern Virginia. Having failed twice to overwinter Thailand Giants (Colocasia gigantea) I found these cold hardy Pink Chinas (from PlayitKoi). The larger ones are last year's reemerged and the smaller ones are all its pups. Come first frost last Fall, I cut them at the ground and covered them with a few inches of mulch. Come Spring, I slowly rolled off the mulch as the fear of late frost subsided and these guys popped like crazy. They need shade, so once my palms get big enough to make shade, I'll transplant some of these pups for aro…

Just realized I didn't post in the right area, I thought I was in TROPICAL LOOKING PLANTS - Other Than Palms, my bad sorry 💀 A couple months back I was given a couple of plants that some people abandoned when they moved out of their home, and it was at the end of winter, maybe about March, when I received them, but they sat in the place for about a month before I could actually get them, because there's a 30 day period if they don't come back for them, then they are free for the taking, but they sat without care or water and they were on the decline, so I took them all, and there was a pothos, spider plant, and this dracena, The dracena was sitting in very poor soil …

New House, New Yard

I was inspired by @DAVEinMB's thread about his landscaping progress, so I thought I would do something similar. As time passes and progress is made and plants put on new growth, I will update this thread with photos. I recently bought a new house in Wickenburg, AZ which was built on a lot that had been abandoned and empty for about 15 years. At one point there had been a house here, but it was torn down by ADOT in 2006 and then they never did anything with the land. I am down at the bottom of a valley near the river, so it will probably get to 19-20 at least once per year in the early morning - probably only for a few minutes until the sun crests the horizon. …

Finally got some new growth on two of my transplanted palms! Mule was dug up from my yard in San Antonio in late February and kept in a pot 3 weeks before planting in March. It spear-pulled within 2 weeks and I treated with some hydrogen peroxide and copper fungicide. It's been sitting there for the past two months with 3 brown fronds and one green petiole.

Sabal Minor Questions

I have several questions about the sabal minor below 1) the sabal has generated several seedlings (to the left of the stem). Do I have to dig them up to avoid the plants choking each other? (planning to do that early Sept) 2) Does the inflorescence reduce the number of fronds the sabal grows? If so if I were to cut off the inflorescence in early spring would I get more frond production and would this hurt the plant? 3) Oddly the 4 new fronds produced this summer by this Sabal grew with exactly the same orientation, they grew on top of each other. (See the dark green clump of fronds that are standing straight up at the back of the Sabal) Is there somethi…

Ok…shared the story of my 2nd attempt to germinate palm seeds…1st attempt, Sabal minor seeds from my 13-year old palms in South Bethany, Delaware…perfect palms, no protection…put three seeds in a pot, all three sprouted and all are in-ground and doing great 2 years now, unprotected…2nd attempt…dreaming of that in-ground zone 7 pinnate so ordered Butia Catarinensis seeds and tried the bag method to sprout them but even copper fungicide didn’t deter the fungus so I spread them out on my garden bench to dry…checked on then the next day and they were all gone…I was squirreled. Long story short, the squirrel buried one right off my ground level deck facing north. This spring, …

Sabal Palmetto Fronds Browning
by romeyjdogg- 3 followers

Hello all, Need some help with my my Sabal Palmettos (planted 2-3 months ago). The outer fronds appear to be getting brown and crispy, so I'm thinking it's a sign that they're not getting enough water. These are supposedly regenerated Palmettos, for what it's worth. They've been pushing new growth since planted and spears look to be green. Hopefully this can be remedied. For what it's worth, my much smaller BxJ planted at same time looks fine with no browning. These palmettos came from Florida so they may have grown up in much different climates. What do the experts have to say on this?
