More Caryota Urens Seed
by Kumar- 9 replies
I'm off to Calcutta for a week this Saturday which means I get to clean up the fruiting mess that our caryota urens has been making for the last few weeks. If anyone wants any caryota seed, let me know; I've already sent out heaps so I wouldn't normally bring back any (more so in this humid weather) but if you have a caryota fetish that can't wait, let me know and assuming the infructescence has not been cut down, I will collect some for you. I wonder whether any of the seed that I have sent to PT members germinated? It's been two months, so results should be clear. PS - Photos of the mother tree are here - http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=28205

by newtothis- 1 reply

So I took a whole batch off a florida sabal and threw a few hundered seeds in pots. They are now pushing the 2nd leaflet and I've repotted as many as I need. The rest I would like to send out in return for the generous gifts I've recieved from members here. The only catch is I have not done this before and don't know the best way to remove from the community pot or package for shipping. So they may or may not make it So if your interested I'll do my best and send these out in batches of 10 or so. Just send me your info. If you have anything to send in return thats cool too

Free Sabal Minor Seed
by DoomsDave- 5 replies
- 2.8k views
Howdyall: TIme to break in the Freebie Forum! I've still got a few Sabal minor seeds left, and some of you have already sent me information with your name and mailing addresses. PM me your name, mailing address, and I'll send you a free envelope with seeds in it. My plant is a trunkless type, which will probably be hardier than the trunked types. I've sent seeds all over the world, including Alabama, Texas, Florida, Croatia, England, Poland, Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, India and Indonesia. They're small seeds, so quite a number will fit in an envelope. dave

Free Seed = Livistona sp
by Kumar- 4 replies
- 2.1k views
I wrote an account of my findings at http://www.palmtalk....howtopic=28646. An outcome of that afternoon was some three dozen or more surplus seed of both varieties of what appears to be some species of Livistona (that I mistook for Pritchardia initially)? and which I'm giving away free. Let me know if you're interested. I don't know how feasible this is but if possible I would like to send the entire lot to one person in the USA if he or she is willing to thereafter post smaller quantities to all those who want any in North America - as this helps to keep my international postage costs low. Below are photos of the plants in question - yet to be identified - and see…

Some Mango seeds
by Kumar- 5 replies
- 3.6k views
I have a half dozen Mango seeds of variety Gulab Khas. This is a large leafed (the sort that produces a red flush of new leaves) early mango variety that ripens to a yellow fruit with a red top no less brilliant than a chambeyronia flush. The fruit is more sour than sweet and is reasonably large. If any one wants a pair or more, let me know. Naturally these seeds though capable of producing vigorous seedlings and large trees are no good for producing quality fruit(though the unripe fruit is equally delicious). Here is a photo of the mango type, taken off the internet. An interesting write up of this variety can be read at http://www.urdustudies.com/pdf/15/30seng…

Rhopalostylis sapida 'chatham island'
by MattyB- 10 replies
Chatham Island is the more robust sapida that grows faster and takes more sun. Darold was nice enough to send me a bunch of these last year and as Summer is fast approaching I'm thinking I wanna get them out of the greenhouse and into the nice cool shade. They seem to do much better on my shadey porch than in the hot greenhouse but I only need a couple of them, not 10! Anyway, I've got several of them to give away and pass along the generosity that Darold has started. Come on by and get one or two if you want. They're in 4" pots and could use a little TLC, but hey, they're free!!!!!! PM me. six one nine 206-7782 I'm stealing this photo from Paul. I think one of…

RIP RAP -- Broken up concrete
by DoomsDave- 2 replies
- 2.5k views
Howydall: I'm engaging in a renovation of Shangri-La Habra, which includes the removal of concrete walks, etc. The inevitable byproduct is lots of chunks of concrete. I could leave them for the garbage people, who in turn will dump them in a landfill, and the land will get too full. If you have a use for this let me know. It's heavy, you'll need a pick up, but I will, of course, be happy to help load it, and, if you like give a tour of the garden . . . . SHOOT ME A PM!

Free Mango Seeds - Alphonso
by Kumar- 2 replies
- 2.6k views
Mango season has started in full swing and occasionally I buy some of these outrageously priced Alphonso mangos - of which a great deal of hype is made each year. These (the mangos and the hype) are mostly exported but in case you have heard about this variety but don't have or can't get any seed, let me know. I have dried a half-dozen seeds and can give these away. As always, not recommended for fruit production. Just in case however, the fruit is yellow and almost fibre-free and the tree is much smaller than our Bengal varieties - tends to branch a lot more too.

Licuala Grandis seed
by Kumar- 5 replies
- 2.9k views
G'morning everyone. I met today, on my morning walk, an old Parsi gentleman (Parsis are Zoroastrians - a very ancient religous faith, originating in Persia) who lives in my neighbourhood. We were discussing plants in general and he mentioned he had a large garden and invited me for a visit and a cup of tea. He had all the usual palms but of interest were some fruiting Licuala Grandis and two Livistonas I could not identify but which I suspect from the large inflorescence and spherical fruit is L. mariae (photos will be put up tomorrow). I collected some seed of these two and I can send out two packets of ten each to anyone who has interest.

Free Caryota urens seed
by Kumar- 1 follower
- 3.4k views
It's that time of the year (again) when a stalk of our solitary Caryota urens begins ripening - and that means an unending litter of fruit all day everywhere and plenty of curses and grumbles as the inevitable cleanup is ordered - not to mention a freeze in our relations with the neighbours. Instead of wasting all the fruit, I thought I'll give it away on Palmtalk free. Send me a PM if you have interest. I'm afraid though I will have to send the fruit whole because I havn't found a way to clean the stuff without hurting my hands . Typically each fruit has 1-2 seeds. The fertility is proven and the seeds are on average a week old. These seeds are rather heavy so …

P. dactylifera is for me a good germination candidate and for the past year have been busy reminding friends who go to the gulf on work or holiday to get different varieties. Today, I have got a dozen dates of the 'Maktoum' variety (apparently from the holy city of Medina). By way of description, these are quite large, brown rather than black, with a crusty peel and a dry interior that requires a bit of chewing - not one of those melt-in-your-mouth candy varieties. The taste is very agreeable though and it does not become sticky inside the mouth. The seeds are in excellent shape. I realize that this is not the best technique for cultivation but nevertheless, it is boun…

Dypsis lutescens free seed
by Kumar- 6 replies
- 2.2k views
Alright, alright, no brickbats please ! I know this is one of the most overused palms around - I'm sick to death of it myself - but in the very very unlikely event you've been looking for this and failed, then I have gathered some from a luxurious clump belonging to a relative of mine here in Bombay. He was pruning his clump and since I show some interest in his lutescens (for the sake of politeness), he had faithfully kept the seeds, spathe and bracket aside for me before giving the unfortunate palm (15 feet high) the axe. 60 fully formed seed free from structural defects - only till next friday.

I have three spinulosums that need to go. Two are kinda large and need to be dug up. They're about 4-5 feet tall, so they could be easily had with a shovel. The third is in a pot. I also have a sago sp in a 3gal. pot. Plus I have a nice size Zamia furfuracea in the ground. Just send me a message if you're interested. They are all free!!! They're located in Jupiter Farms...

Free Seed

My dear friends - I have just returned to bombay after my thailand trip. (I will be writing on that soon) On my journey there I stopped briefly at calcutta where as per my instruction the caretaker of our santiniketan country home had kept for me a fruiting branch from each of the two phoenix sylvestris that grow there (and may soon be cut down I may add). Their fertility is beyond question and the trees are one very robust and dangerous, the other not so. You will find photos of one in my old discussion titled 'Sights of Bolpur' under Tropical Plants. Anyway, after cleaning the lot and discarding the rotten ones, hollow ones, etc. I am left with some sixty from each tree…
