My Trip to Hawaii

I visited the Big Island for about a week, earlier this month. Weather was great, and I was able to meet up with some even better people. I'll periodically post more pictures, in blocks. I was fortunate to visit Bo and see his garden, as well as Kim's. I took lots of pictures, but the light was a little hectic, and I had to get a little creative. But, here were some of the better ones. Enjoy! Bo and Kim's Garden:

Bali November 2017
by greysrigging- 6 replies

Had an extended holiday on the Indonesian island of Bali back in Nov-Dec. My first visit there despite my home town of Darwin Australia being only 2 and a bit hours away. November is perhaps not the ideal time to visit as it is the beginning of their 'Wet' season and those not acclimatised to the high temps and humidity find things a bit trying. My partner and I coped quite well as we hail from a region of Northern Australian that has a brutal monsoonal climate. Bali is blessed with rich volcanic soils and generous abundant rainfall so the whole island has a lush tropical look. It is a very 'palmy' place with lots of native and exotic palm species in cultivation…

There were some fan palms too. Sorry I'm not more of a fan palm person to know if they were Washingtonias, Livistonas, something else. But I figured I had to be the first person on Palmtalk to go to several of these places (at least Turkmenistan), and others might be interested, so here goes: Central Asia Trip Report I hope one or more of you find this helpful. Let me know if you have any questions. Justin

South Beach Botanical Garden

Designed by Raymond Jungles, its a decent public park in South Beach a few blocks from the hotel I was staying at. I had been to the memorial next door but did not realise that the gardens were right there. I really enjoy thie influences of Brule Marx in his work, his curves, textures, and geometries all serenade togethere in really nice symphony. Though not many great plants here, I just like the overall design of the park.

I am staying at the Kampong in a few weeks, be waiting for some posts related to that!

"Jardin Majorelle" Marrakech - Morocco

Hi folks This summer I visited Marrakech (Morocco) for the thirth and consecutive year and finally made it to the famous Majorelle garden! This garden was created by the painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) in forty years and was afterwards also bought by the well know fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent. It isn't that big but the small and shade lanes, the ridge and well maintained collection and the typical "majorelle-blue" colored buildings make the visite worth while!

Wandering the streets of Townsville
by greysrigging- 1 reply

Made a quick trip over to Townsville last week ( investment property inspection.....a poor one as the Townsville property prices are in a deep slump.....oh well.... ) Townsville is probably the driest location on the whole Queensland coast. Residents of wetter areas to the north and south refer to the city as 'Brownsville'. Annual average rainfall is 1100mm or 44". However, most of this falls in the summer months and winters are generally rainless or a couple of inches at best. For our visit the place was nice and green courtesy of a 150mm or 6" unseasonal dump of rain in late May If one is prepared to pour the water on during the dry months nearly all sub tropi…

Macrozamia sp Enneaba
by Tyrone- 20 replies

About a year ago I travelled up to Exmouth in the tropics on the west coast of Australia. On the way back home we stopped in about 200km north of Perth at this stand of Macrozamia sp Enneaba. There are three species of Macrozamia in Western Australia. Macrozamia reidlii from around Perth down to Albany on the southern coast line, Macrozamia dyeri from Esperance to Israelite Bay on the south coast, and this undescribed species which reportedly exists from Perth's northern suburbs to around Enneaba south of Geraldton. Some consider it to be Macrozamia fraseri, which is a name applied to the western Macrozamia by some. I'm of the opinion this is a different species with a…

Thought I would start a photo thread of my travels in the Northern regions of Australia. I'm a keen 4WDriver and I always have a camera handy.....and being a lapsed palm enthusiast I seem to have quite a few pics of local palms ( native and exotic ) in my photo files. About an hour and a half south west of Darwin on Bynoe Harbor, there is a nice little resort called Crab Claw. These pics from November 2016.....start of our 'Wet Season' Foxtails growing in pure beach sand only 3' above the high tide line. They really are a tough species that can handle harsh growing conditions way different to their native habitat on Cape York Peninsular. …

Ann Norton Sculpture Garden

Pedro and I did a fast check of the condition of the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden on Thursday Jan. 21,2010. This is over a week after the Jan.2-11 cold event in which no freezing temperatures were incurred but a long time-frame between the low 60'sF and approximately 35F. As reported previously, this is the longest cold event since 1940 for South Florida. We were pleasantly surprised but there were certainly issues presented to many out of the ordinary and rather Tropical specimens. Start with a Satakentia liukiuensis: A big Teddy among others in there somewhere: Ptychosperma macarthurii: A large Cocothrinax crinitia:

SECOND VISIT TO TASMANIA
by Phoenix Bob- 1 reply

Recently returned from a week's stay in Tasmania where we were guests of Tassie Troy and his wife, Danylle. Both Troy and his wife went far beyond the boundaries of being excellent hosts. Each took time off from work in order to show us some of the fantastic sights Tasmania has to offer visitors from other corners of the world such as my wife and me. We have alway contended that New Zealand is our favorite spot on the planet, but Tasmania is closing in on that number one position. The pristine condition of Australia's southern-most state is superb, and I would suspect that its remote location (250 miles south of mainland Australia) has much to do with its near-perfect…

I had the opportunity and honor to get a quick tour of Josh-O's home garden by none other than the man himself. Aside from his excellent and welcoming demeanor, helpfulness, great spirit and alacrity, his garden made me speechless. It is fantastically well organized. I was beside myself looking at the exquisite specimens he has in his premises. I should have taken pictures. He has such wonderful exemplars of select palms and dypsis, one can only begin to fathom what he has in his Vista Nursery. Here again Josh-O, thank you for the tour. Hidden tropical paradise in Carlsbad. Alex
