by Matthew92- 20 replies

Just took a trip down to Central and South FL. Thought I would share some of the palms and plants I enjoyed seeing. Stayed in Homestead, FL for a few days followed by a stop through Crystal River on the way back. Was exciting to see the first tropical palms going down the state- found this drop dead gorgeous queen palm a little south of Orlando.

Palms in a secluded bay turkey

Hi All Found these palms in a bay in the Hisareonu Gulf Turkey There is evidence of maybe civilisation back 1300-1000 bc in the area. The only way to get there is by boat. They have spread up a valley into the hills and also cover the shore line There is also dead trunks that look like they have died of old age It was a real surprise to see them as the only other place we have seen palms are the ones planted in towns but never this many in one place. Phoenix........... Somebody might know the species

What are these? I want!

So I went out on the motorcycle today this fine fall evening for some lunch and the weather was amazing. A perfect 75 degrees, bright sun, got some lunch then walked across the street and took a stroll through the mall. Most of your typical palms and cycads are tucked away for the fall and winter here now from the outside garden. As I was strolling through the mall, I spotted some new really attractive looking trees! I have no idea what they are, but look like palms to me. They were all single thin trunks, fairly long, and reaching maybe about 6-7 feet tall. I would love to have one of these in my apartment along with my Christmas palms. Anyone know what these are?

Che in Ceylon
by doranakandawatta- 2 replies

I have been told last days that Che Guevara visited Ceylon in 1959. The estate is still existing close to Horana and the garden has been designed by Bewis Bawa, the old gardener told. I would be a dream to restore the garden, plant palms and drink tea and eat banana That place is a witness of the history of the country and of the cultural life as well. But I am not sure it gets any protection. The Mohogany Tree planted by Ernesto Che Guevara. Behind the tree, is the Estate Bungalow where Che and the Delegation were drinking Ceylon Tea and eating banana.

Tropical garden design in Ceylon's 50's
by doranakandawatta- 1 reply

I have been told that Yahala Kele Estate's garden (not far from Horana) where Che Guevara came in 1959 has been designed by Bewis Bawa, the older brother of Geoffrey Bawa and the owner and creator of Brief Garden, a place everyone can visit near Bentota ( see some of my older posts with search engine : Brief Garden). I feel that the frame of the garden is still interesting and it reminds me that Bewis Bawa's design could have been an inspiration source for Made Wijaya, the famous australian balinese garden designer who visited Ceylon and was a friend of Bewis, Geoffrey Bawa and Donald Friend, australian artist. It would be a dream to replant and restore this lov…

North of Kandy, close to Dambulla, Kandalama Hotel, Geoffrey Bawa 's work (1994): Symbiosis with nature, Pools: Friends: I have been lucky to stay there during the war time, so it wasn't too crowed! This building has to be quiet, peaceful, then you can meet so many animals! birds, bats, reptiles.... and monkeys.

I was looking for Palms and things seemed good: Not exactly a Palm but an interesting caricature. A little further down the yellow brick road I saw what appeared to be a healthy stand of Veithchias: I went around the other side of these palms when I encountered a colony I had never seen: I did not expect to see a horse and it's tadpole so I walked a little further: A bronze Piggie drinking out of a barrel under Crotons? What more?

Borneo Palms in Habitat 1 2 3 4

The upcoming biennial has motivated me to post some pictures from a trip my wife, Mary, and I took to Borneo a couple of years ago. Part of our trip hit some of the same destinations planned for the biennial, but there’s so much to see – and so many palms – that it was an easy decision to return with the palm society this year. If anyone is still wondering about whether to sign up, perhaps these shots will help you get you off the fence. Let’s start with Bako National Park which figures to be a highlight of the biennial. Sandy beaches, lush rainforest, golden cliffs, and fantastic palms. Here’s Mary and me on one of those beautiful beaches in Bako with Oncosperma tig…

Illawarra rainforests
by philinsydney- 8 replies

I was lucky enough to go on a tour of the Illawarra rainforests with Friends of Sydney RBG a few weeks ago. The Illawarra escarpment has a mixture of subtropical and temperate rainforests due to the elevation of the escarpment. The subtropical component could be considered a southerly outlier of the more extensive subtropical rainforests north of the Hunter Valley. Bangalow palms are native, but do not grow in extensive groves as they do further north. Cyathea australis Syzygium smithii Quintinia sieberi this species strangles treeferns by sending roots down through the trunk into the ground in a similar way to strangler figs.…

FLORIDA - YOUR FAVORITE SPOTS!
by The Silent Seed- 13 replies

As most of us know, Florida is huge, and full of gardens, parks, nurseries, etc. Let's hear your favorites, and why? I'm more curious about the less obvious - For example; Leu and Fairchild are going to be on almost everybody's top 5 for obvious reasons : Extensive, unusual plantings, attractively layed out, etc. Here's a couple of mine: Deerfield Beach Arboretum - Small, but nice walk-around path, with a lot of unique, unusual trees. Excelsa Gardens (Nursery) - Lots of unique stuff not found in every other large nursery/grower, and above all - you can't ask for friendlier staff. The dirt road (Alligator Alley???) between Miami and Naples - A beaut…

I still havent managed in 1.5 years to dedicate a full schedule to visiting the gardens. So its going to be in drips and drabs. However there were some interesting palms just across the road. Some massive Butias and lovely examples of Trachycarpus. Also the odd tropical setting.

CUBA (CIENFUEGO PROVINCE BOTANICAL GARDEN)
by Phoenix Bob- 4 replies
- 1.1k views
Because of its "isolated" location, Cienfuegos Province Botanical Garden in Cuba is (blessedly) little known to most travelers, especially U.S, residents. This garden is rumored to have one of the world's finest collection of palms, and after a visit last week, I would believe believe such claims. The park is immense (several hundred acres I would presume), and palms are only a part of its extensive flora display. Cienfuegos is also known for its huge collection of all things tropical. Unfortunately, I was only able to spend a few hours in this place which would require several days of exploration in order to make a (arguably) thorough reconnaissance. I have yet to…
