Roystoneas! In habitat!

Howdyall: I wanted to avoid too many artificial attractions and try to focus on natural things, which, of course, have a way being made artificial, but that's for the philosphers to worry about over beer or fermented grape juice. So, I went to the Collier-Seminole State Park just south of Naples on the west coast of FL on the way to Miami. This park includes a natural "hammock" which is a raised limestone dome upon which grows various trees and plants, and which must endure extremes of dry and wet. This appears to be a remnant Roystonea population, though it is regenerating itself. Here's a general view of some wild Royals from the parking lot.

Marco Island -- Collier County, FL

Howdyall: After my visit to the palm hammock park, I went to the nearby city of Marco Island. I thought (wrongly as it turned out) that there'd be no place to feed my salivating piehole between there and Miami, so MI was nearby and there I went. I roared on down to MI, stomach growling . . . .

I must say, those Royals ARE a sight to see up close. I was down in Bradenton this morning w/ my daughter hittin' some 4-6'rs... She loves her boogie boardin'... AnyHoot, on the way home I decide to 86 the interstate and take US41... That'd take me right up to those Royals I posted about before... Anyways, the place is evidently closed on Saturdays, but I've gotta make a weekday trip one day to do a tour or something... But here's what I could get from the locked gate:

Surinam September 2015

Last September I went on holiday with my wife and 3 year old daughter to Surinam. We got ourselves a nice little house at about 30 minutes drive from the city of Paramaribo for the coming weeks and rented a small toyota to get around. I was looking very much forward to 4 weeks of palmspotting and flyfishing some of the rivers. It all turned out a little different because my pregnant wife got very nauseous. But between caring for my wife and daughter I still I managed to get away a couple of times and drive into dense forests to spot some palms and fish a few creeks. Finally after 2 weeks, we decided to go home earlier so my wife could be nausious in the comfort of our own…

Dear palmfriends; I plan to spend my holidays in Florida this spring. What are the places you have to see from a palmy-perspective? I have never been there before, but I expect the Caribien coast to be the most interesting? Wim.

Goodbye Melbourne - Hello Cairns 1 2

Hi all, Firstly, Happy New Year to everyone out there. I hope 2013 is safe, happy and successful for you. Tomorrow marks a new beginning for me. After living in Melbourne, Victoria for 22 years, I am relocating to Cairns, Queensland. I will be starting the big drive tomorrow. Approx 3400km (2100 miles) directly north. From 38 Deg South, up to 16 Deg South. I will spread the drive out over 5 days, including one rest day on the Sunshine Coast in the middle of the trip. Whilst I am obviously excited about being able to move to the tropics, and grow some stunning palms, there is also a hint of sadness at what I am leaving behind. Needless to say, the car is …

Fakahatchee Strand in the Everglades!

I went here this Saturday. It's an amazing place! Here is the entrance! This is a strange quarry like pool on the side. This was filled with humungous gar, many brim, and there was even an Alligator resting on the side. It is super deep and incongruent with its surroundings. Does anyone know what this epiphytic plant is? There are many Taxodium ascendens here. There are a few Taxodium distichum, but not many. Tillandsia fasciculata. One of the many kinds here! This was the only one low enough to photograph. What type of fern is this? Can anyone identify these cool geometric flowers? Ficus aurea. There are TONS of these there, but…

A beautiful pre xmas walk in a really beautiful spot of Australia. This was literally a 5 min drive from my cousins house. She lives in suburbia but australia is great at creating reserves and protecting small patches like this. Heaps of Livistona australis and Archontophoenix cunninghamiana. Still think that Livistona australis syn. eungellaensis is totally different and should be separated.. Just saying lol

Heaps of palms about. Could have planted more Archonto's. They had a purpurea. Bismarks were quite happy. Rhopies were quite plentiful with the biggest one being close to 4 metres. Cycad collection was ok a little dull. At least the one I grew up with in South Africa was quite plentiful and big. Encephalartos altensteinii. Linospadix monostachyos was quite plentiful. Otherwise a wonderful visit and strangly I didnt have time to get to the ACTUAL palm section..

The 19th of July we went to take a tour of the Tempisque river in Bolsón, Guanacaste. Here are some photos my brother (Geonomadude) and I took. A satellite view (from Google Maps) of the area. A small local boat. Entrance to the Cañas river (Río Cañas). This river flows into the Tempisque river. The small dock. A clumping Bactris sp. spotted from the boat. A leaning Monkey Pod Tree (which we call Cenízaro), Samanea saman. An Attalea butyracea in the riverside.

These pictures are of Dale Holton and my trip to Belize. We went to have a good time away and to find a new Zamia to photograph youll have to stay tune for more about that Zamia We flew into Belize City and made our way to the capital Belmopan where we stayed at a very nice B&B. Dale has a friend Lou Thomas that sell seeds that lives close to Belmopan that we plan to visit. Visit to Peru: July 2006 1 2
by Jeff Searle- 46 replies

This past July, my son Travis, my friend Rob Van de Berg and myself, flew down to Peru for a quick visit. The main goal of this trip was to learn more about Chamaedorea fragrans. We sought out such information as: species locality, elevations where they may be found, and at what time of the year they are seeding. Secondly, Rob wanted to visit farms belonging to our host, Rodolfo. These farms produce thousands of cut flowers and leaves from hundreds of different plants. A photo of a Euterpe sp. we found. Jeff
