Record breaking snowstorms in southeast Europe

So far to date, this winter storm is undoubtedly the biggest event so far in Europe this season. Excluding the unseasonably warm spell for western and central Europe back in late December / early January, there hasn't been much else for us to talk about. However, this snowfall event is certainly significant and more than likely record breaking for Greece and Turkey. Northern Syria got hit pretty bad too, as did eastern Europe in general. I certainly don't recall many of these areas getting hit this bad before. It must be the worst snow storm to hit the Med region in several decades, surely? Starting with Greece, this was Athens on Monday afternoon, before things got …

Crazy microclimate in East Austin (not the good kind)
by DreaminAboutPalms- 3 replies

This morning when I woke up at 5AM it was 41 degrees in North Austin where I live near the domain, I drive out to Manor 15 miles or so east off 290 to golf and it is 34 degrees at the manor weather station and 32 right outside the clubhouse. I begin talking with this other member who lives on the course in the shadowglen neighborhood off hole #11, and he has the app on his phone connected to a temperature gauge in his backyard. He began explaining to me how the area around his house is significantly colder than the temperature at the clubhouse, and he showed me this mornings temperature reading of 25.6 at 6:37AM, and showed me weather data for the whole month reveali…

The furthest eastern point in the state of Florida is located at Palm Beach Shores, Florida (26.7/80.0356) while Palm Beach, Florida (26.7/80.0364) is nearby. Presently, the Gulfstream/Florida Current is approximately 5-10 miles of from PB and likely closer to 5 miles based upon Miami- So. Fl. NWS Marine Zone forecast. The postulate is that land closer to the Gulfstream/Florida Current experiences substantially higher winter minimum temperatures. A relatively new WeatherStation has been located in PB near the old Blossom property. It is KFLPALMB357 (hereinafter “PB Station”) and is located on the intracoastal side rather than the ocean side. A winter climate comparis…

Best Frost Cloth
by ahosey01- 3 replies

Does anyone here have any good recommendations on frost cloth? I bought one to cover a small, tender cactus in the yard and it literally frosted both on top of and under the cloth during a radiative frost. Clearly a crappy product.

The western palm areas of the United States experienced a traditional December 2021 while the eastern palm areas of the United States experienced what can only be described as wildly warm. While I have not verified where this December 2021 lines up historically, I can only assume that it must be approaching Los Angeles, California Had a high maximum temperature of 69°F, a mean temperature of 55.2°F and a minimum temperature of 40°F. San Diego, California had a high maximum temperature of 70°F, a mean temperature of 55.81F and a minimum temperature of 39°F. Palm Springs, California had a maximum temperature of 89°F, a mean temperature of 58.51F and a minimum temperat…

Are there any other Zone 5a palm growers out there?

I live in Ottawa, Canada. I have been growing palms for about seven years in pots. This year I am trying my first palm planted in the ground and overwintering it outdoors (with protection, of course). It is a washingtonia robusta. If it survives the winter, I will be planting two or three more in the spring. I also want to try a couple of Trachycarpus Fortunei. I am also trying to overwinter some musa basjoo and a dracanea by covering them with mulch. I also have a yucca which has been outside for three years now with no protection. If you have experience with any of these in zone 5a, or less, I would love to hear your experiences. If you want to check out my yard on YouT…

Record breaking warmth for New Year's in Europe?

I may have to crack out the shorts next week for work. My written rule is that anything over 16C / 61F is typically shorts and t-shirt weather in my line of work. Otherwise I will overheat if I am working in jeans and a hoodie inside the warehouse. Those forecasted nighttime temperatures are ridiculous as well for 51N during the last week of December. I would expect nighttime lows of 13-14C in July, let alone late December. Some model runs are putting the nighttime lows at 15C for Wednesday and Thursday following a high of 18C / 64F on Wednesday! 14C at 850hPa translates to about 17-18C at ground level. It will be interesting to see just how warm it get…

I was reviewing temperatures in several areas of California and Arizona this morning and observed the following temperatures in relatively close areas: 35F at LA Civic Center/50F at Rolling Hills; 33F at Bonita/46 at Coronado; 36F at Rancho Mirage/47F at La Quinta; In Arizona in Phoenix, 30F at Green Gables/50F at Palm Verde Foothills These are large temperature fluctuations in relatively nearby locations. Can you explain the variables that cause these large temperature differences in relatively short distances? Also, is this a cold front or standard December temperatures? In Florida currently where I am located, it is 73F headed to 80F plus. If …

Hello everyone! So as a resident of the Athens Riviera I am really puzzled about the true palm potential of south Athens! I mean even in here I have read so many misconceptions on the climate of south Athens (even from Greeks) and coupled with a widespread lack of motivated gardeners in the country that I can not really assess the true palm potential of the Athens Riviera. But I would like to start from what I think I am generally good at: climatology and meteorology. So the Athens Riviera (basically anything south of Nea Smyrni) has a semi-arid climate. Annual rainfall varies from around 330mm in Piraeus to just below 400mm in Nea Smyrni. The mean annual temperature…

I 've been in the blue areas before ( above ) when much of the world map was in showing warmer than average temperatures for certain years . My ultimate Low may not have been that bad but I was very cool during past periods , with late springs and nasty wet winters . I'll take this for a change , and hope it pans out .

First Frost!
by ahosey01- 4 replies
First frost today here in Wickenburg, AZ. I don’t have many frost-sensitive plants, except a potted aloe species under the patio roof, so this doesn’t really effect my garden. Many of my deciduous trees were still in leaf and hadn’t turned colors yet, so it toasted a bunch of green leaves that were due to fall off sooner or later. Other than that, no meaningful impacts to the garden. Doesn’t appear we actually hit freezing - it was just very humid last night from a couple days of rain. Anyone else get frost yet? What were the impacts!?

There's a website from Plymouth State College in Plymouth NH that has an extensive weather department . They are about an hour away from the infamous Mt Washington ( the worlds worst weather is their slogan ) . I went to a school down the road from that college and I like to check up on their webcam and see what it is like there from time to time . It's cool in NC but that's more snow there than I've had in 2 years . Check out the weather site they have at Plymouth State College . https://vortex.plymouth.edu Pictures on the site update every 5 minutes , and there are some cameras showing different shots of Mt Washington that update too . …

Ordering plants online during the winter
by miamicuse- 1 follower

Is it a good idea to order plants online during the winter months? Even though it may be warm where you are (I am in Fort Lauderdale) and say you are ordering from another warm climate seller, say Hawaii, Texas etc...that the transit may take it through a hub in Chicago, New York or Minneapolis, where it can be below zero, where the parcels may be sitting outside waiting, or being sorted in an unheated space right? Is this a concern?

Why am i considered 10a? 1 2
by tvold- 42 replies

So I live in Golden Gate, which is basically a subsidiary of Naples and its a few miles east of downtown. On maps it is listed as a 10a hardiness zone, yet the coldest it gets here in winter is the lower 40s with a Cold Front. Winters here are windy however, which brings with it wind chill. Does this count towards the plant hardiness zone, or not? If not, I've NEVER seen it in the 30s here (besides like 2010) without factoring in wind chill.

Cold damage on my coconut palm?
by Plantking165- 34 replies

So recently we have been hitting the low 50s and an occasional 45 to 48 at night and my coconut palm is showing severe yellowing with brown spots all over it. I'm not sure if it's a disease or the cool weather that is causing it ill show pics below of what it looked like in September vs now. The last pic it has yellow patches all over I have no idea why.

So I see a small area that spans into multiple states (Mostly North Carolina, a tad in South Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia) that is an Oceanic climate according to the Köppen Climate Classification Map. What is causing this? It seems odd that all of the surrounding area is Humid Subtropical Climate. Also, could this mean that some different palms could live here (with protection obviously)?

Fall/WInter weather in the PNW talk. 1 2 3 4

New season new thread. So only 3 weeks ago we were in the 80's and now barely reaching 60 the last few days or more. The return of semi-regular rain has been great, but aside from one event where I recorded an inch over 2.5 days I haven't been getting very much. Rain/drizzle seems to be coming through about once a week but I'm picking up 0.05" give or take. It appears that the rain is just that little bit further north, I know Portland proper has had much more rain than what I seem to be getting. I often see the dark clouds but they seem to skirt around me. I dug a hole for a new olive tree and after the top 1/4" the ground was dry. Most days are still sunny …

Its not winter yet, thankfully, but the cold fronts have started. There have been cold fronts periodically, but you could never tell a difference from them, that is until the week before last week. A cold front came through and knocked morning temps into the low 60's, highs remained the upper 80's though. Looking ahead into this week, another cold front is forecast to sink south across the eastern US. Morning temps here are currently forecast to be in the upper 50's toward the end of this week, highs in the upper 70's to low 80's. If this comes to pass, it would be the first noticeable cold front of the season
