Upcoming Strong Pacific Storms
by Palmy- 18 replies
I’m sure most of California is aware of this but we are expected to have some very strong storms roll on through here producing hurricane force winds and heavy rain all along the coast of California. It would appear that central California is going to get the brunt of the storm. Models indicate that we could see 3-5 inches of rain in the lowland and up to 6- 8 inches on the bay area hill tops. It also looks like we are going to have very windy conditions. It looks like the temps will fall too later in the week. Would the palm experts recommend tying down some of the tall palm trees? I’m on a hill crest and the last thing I want are hurricane forced gusts. NOAA SF…

Howdyall: I note that last night we were all yakking about how cold it was going to get, as I felt the temps at Ken Johnson's place here south of Miami fall and fall and fall. But, no evident cold damage, though more cold weather is expected for this evening/morning. But . . . Tampa, Orlando, JAX, Tallahassee, YIKE, it got cold there. So, how'd you all fare? Sounds like you were getting prepared . . . . Our joint crying towel is out and ready. dave

The Beauty of Winter
by _Keith- 30 replies

I guess it was Wal's reply to an eariler email that sparked this thought. As I was out just a little while ago picking up tender plants and covering the one palm I was worried about, I again remembered the beauty of winter. Here in Louisiana winter is a time of clear vision. For one thing it is clear physically and virtually with visibility for miles. No haze, just clear blue skies and even clearer air near the ground. The angles of the sun give the water an entirely different look too. Being a fisherman, I alway remember marsh fishing at this time of year being great. I guess my memories also remember the sun angles on the water, because no matter where I am when…

Cold Protection Help
by NBTX11- 37 replies

Well, we started out with a low of 27 tonight. Now, weather underground is saying 23-24, which means it could get as low as 20F. Weather.com still says 27, so who knows, maybe it won't get that cold. I wasn't worried until they kept revising the temps, now I am worried about the attached queen palm. Last year it got down to around 23F and it burned about 40-50%, but recovered in spring fairly fast. It is now very established and strong despite how young it is, so I doubt 23-24 will harm it at all, but I am worried about the what if temp of 20. Palm is about 8 ft tall or so. Would you protect this palm, if so how. All my other stuff is hardy and doesn't nee…

January Weather Thread 1 2 3

I thought a January weather thread was already started, but I can't find it. Of course the main thing on my mind is the expected hard freeze on the night of Jan 2. I have protected my most exposed landscape bed in the front of the house, but it seems that most of my palms are just too big for me to realistically protect unless I want to erect several "palmscrapers". The rest is just going to have to ride it out. My forcast lows for Jan 2 at the time of this post (zip 33570): NOAA/NWS: 28F Accuweather: 29F TWC: 29F Wunderground: 35F ??? Cheer up the average temperatures start going back up in January. At least here in TX, and in FL, they bottom out around now and start going back in the right direction. CA, probably not yet. In another couple months cold weather will be a distant memory.

Jan 2 Cold Snap 1 2 3 4
by _Keith- 134 replies

Gonna get chilly down here, lows of 31, 27, 33 respectively. At least this is a holiday weekend, so I have plenty of time to prepare. I am bringing quite a few plants in that I would normally leave out. I will hit a few with a good burst of liquid fertilizer which might boost the salts in the leaves just a bit and yes, I know I should have done this at least a couple of days ago. I may throw an old sheet over a couple of things, but probably not bother with a light. So, what are you doing to prepare your plants for a brush with death?

Cold spell coming to socal

The news and accuweather are calling for cold air to move in at the end of the week. Snow levels will drop to 3500 feet and coastal temps will be near freezing. Accuweather is calling for 34 degrees in Encinitas which would be the same low temp I had last year during the freeze. Good Luck and don't be a fool cover your tool, I mean palm!

Growth markers for 2008
by PalmGuyWC- 1 reply

Every year on Jan 1st I mark the palms that I want to check for frond growth for the coming year. I use the plastic ties that have an insert on one end. They are used for tieing up vines, etc. If it's a large palm I use two or three ties to make a ring. I then put it over the newest emerging sphere, usually a few inches long, and then at the end of the year it's easy to count the fronds that have grown into the ring. This way there is no gessing how fast your palm grew in a year. If I want to check how fast the emerging sphere is growing, rather than just put a mark with a waterproof felt tip pin where the sphere is emerging from a sheth, I stick a bamboo stake in the…

They're calling a low of 21F for Thursday Morning here in Gainesville. Its still a long way off but considering it should get to around 81F today with a low around 60F tonight it appears we are in for a dramatic change. Big bummer.

Weather Stations

Does anyone have a recommendation for an advanced Weather Station? Something that can use wireless technology to talk to maybe 5 - 10 output sensors? The key thing is one that will connect to your PC so you can download data and track it, graph it, etc.

Queensland weather
by Cycadcenter- 5 replies

Looks as though the central and southern Queensland coast are in for a bit of a blow in the next few days with a possibility of a cyclone forming of the Mackay area. I saw one prediction that it was shaping up like '74. Just saw thai posted on a weather blog................ All this scepticism about this cyclone remind me of the floods of 1886 .. I remember saying to the wife that the emus were roosting in the old gum tree again which usually meant rain. Well she wouldnt have a barr of it..Luckily we lived on a high ridge and after 40 days of cloudburst rain (the nights were fine though) the entire surrounding area was flooded to the sea to a depth of around 50 …

out of town last night-was it very cold???
by Patrick- 5 replies

Hey guys, I went up to visit my dad in reno for christmas and when I came home tonight I was horrified when I checked the low temp. on my digital thermometer- 20.4 degrees F!!!! OUCH! Nothing was protected so I'm worrying (sort of) and asking you guys if you can confirm this?? I took a quick look tonight when I got home and nothing looked immediately horrible- but I know things might show up later.. So, I'm asking you guys in the east bay and beyond what your lows were last night so I can know whether or not to get a new thermometer and throw this old broken one (hopefully) out, or start mixing up the Daconil! Thanks. Pat

Well, It looks like this summer is going to be a scorcher. Yesterday, Xmas day was 41C, the hottest Xmas reading since 1968, but today it has just reached 43.4C which is a record here for December. Even Garden Island, a few km's off shore has reached 43C, which must be a record. It's hard keeping humidity up in this situation. So how hot have others got this southern summer? regards Tyrone

Weather guessers
by galveston1602- 8 replies

The earlier threads got me wondering if theres some sort of conspiracy amongst weathermen to make global warming in fact be true. so far every "cold" night weve had the weather men have called for 40-42 and every time without fail weve been 3-5 degrees cooler. It meay not be a big deal at 40-37 but 30-27 is a big deal, at least to me. anyway, I know its not my location as for the past few winters its been spot on, never more than a degree or 2 max. Oh well, I guess I just remember reading a few threads earlier this year from FL with similar happenings and thought id vent considering they were predicting 43 last night and i hit 36.9 Maybe I shouldnt pick on the wea…

Freezing degree-hours
by mjff- 10 replies

What do you all think of this? I have started collecting data for my area regarding not only the low temperature, but the amount of sub-freezing temperatures experienced. Obviously, just about any palm could be walked through a deep freeze at -10 and survive with no damage, while I imagine many would be toast if you subjected them to 2 weeks of even mild freezing temperatures continuously. To capture both the severity and length of the freeze I am taking the hourly temperature observations for my area, then starting when temperatures drop below freezing and continuing until they rise above freezing, subtracting the actual temperatue from 32 degrees each hour, and…

Quoted from NOAA SF Bay area 3:09PM DEC 17 "A COLD FRONT PUSHES ACROSS THURSDAY. EACH MODEL RUN IS WETTER WITH THIS SYSTEM...BUT THE WINDS LOOK TO BE LESS. THIS SYSTEM WILL HAVE MUCH MORE COLD AIR WITH IT...SO HAVE MENTIONED SNOW DOWN TO 2500 FEET. WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED TO SEE A COATING OF SNOW FRIDAY MORNING IN THE HILLS. RIDGING BUILDS OVERHEAD FRIDAY INTO THE WEEKEND. FRIDAY AND SATURDAY MORNING LOOK TO BE QUITE COLD...WITH 20S AND 30S POSSIBLY WIDESPREAD ACROSS THE DISTRICT. THERE ARE TIMING ISSUES BUT IT LOOKS LIKE ANOTHER ROUND OF RAIN AND WIND IS POSSIBLE AROUND CHRISTMAS EVE" Perhaps a white christmas in the hills? Looks like its go…
