Floods in the are man made.
by Explorer- 1 reply
Maybe an off topic here. but people should know that the current floods in Europe are manmade. Farmers have destroyed the upland moors and vegetation because they want dry land. As a result villages and cities downstream get flooded! And the drainage was even subsidized by taxmoney! A bloody shame! And destruction of upland native vegetation by man is also a problem in other parts of the World. Where upland native vegetation gets destroyed by man, sooner or later there is a price to pay... http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/dec/29/deluge-farmers-flood-grouse-moor-drain-land?CMP=share_btn_tw Alexander

Winter is nearing an end. My average temp of about 63-64F will become 70F in a few weeks, by late Feb and nearly 80F by late March. We add another degree (F) every 4 days, sometimes 3. In TX spring time heats up fast, fast, fast! Can't wait for the real heat to begin.

Disaster in Paradise
by amazondk- 9 replies

The rains have been hitting the southeastern coast of Brazil especially hard this year. The the southern coastal area of Rio de Janeiro and northern São Paulo is one of the most beautiful tropical places on the planet. The mountains drop into the blue ocean from 3 to 4 thousand feet covered in the last remnants of the Atlantic Coast rain forest. For the most part the forest is quite well preserved and the area is dotted with beautiful small resorts with beautiful tropical architecture that blends into the surroudings. Unfortunately the very marraige of buildings and nature set the stage for a local disaster which has killed at least 60 people who were buried alive in…

arizona monsoon in place horray!
by sonoranfans- 3 replies

All my palms are loving it, the monsoon is here in force. Humidity has been above 50% every morning for a week and we even got a little rain(0.6 inch), the first accumulation near my house since march. this years dry/hot season was a long one. Without supplemental watering(other than drip system), I would have alot of cooked fronds now. I have 2 butias showing 4-5 burned lower fronds(they see late day sun). Our temps have dropped 10 degrees to 97-100 range for the daytime high, perfect palm growing weather. As a verification, my bizzies started to open up new spears -that were just sitting there for the past month- almost simultaneously. The braheas are positivel…

Our Irma Evacuation
by IHB1979- 4 replies
Thursday morning, days before a Florida landfall, Irma was being forecast to hit SE Florida and exit around the Cape Canaveral area, then a Charlston, SC landfall. We live on the barrier island south of Cape Canaveral and we knew a mandatory evacuation order was imminent. My family and I buttoned up the house and decided to evacuate. We couldn't find any hotels in the central FL area. So I decided to make the best out of having to evacuate and headed northwest to the panhandle. Traffic was horrendous and gas was in short supply as we made our way from the Melbourne, FL area to Orlando. We were going to take the FL turnpike to get to I75 but it was a parking lot. Instead o…

A rare sight out west... Hurricane Kay
by Silas_Sancona- 22 replies

With the worst of the heat looking to back off a bit across the west over the next few days, attention turns to potential impacts from a rarely experienced weather phenomenon along the west coast of the U.S. While remnants of dying storms do spread clouds and higher humidity levels, the occasional, brief tropical shower / Dry / high-based thunderstorm outbreak across the state from time to time through the summer and fall months almost each year, significant effects from Tropical systems that manage to reach near shore waters of California are extremely rare. While it has happened, direct hits from legit Tropical storms / Hurricane strength systems are noted in Cali…

Not sure how I'd forgotten about it but an article released on the subject today reminded me of one of the craziest events I have witnessed / experienced thus far in my time on this planet. 30 years ago, I was sitting in the house going thru my backpack while awaiting the start of the World Series. Mom was at work up in Redwood City, sister was at her job several miles from the house. Little would I know that in just a couple minutes, the movement of ground just a few miles south of me, up in the Santa Cruz Mountains would unleash chaos, or that the start of that game would become an iconic moment, both in the sports world, but in history. I remember sitting there…

La Nina or not?

A strong/persistent westerly flow in the upper atmosphere has delayed/sheared tropical activity [even at the equator Good news for hurricane weary & drought concerns. Excerpt from WxAmerica Also of interest is the Madden Julian Oscillation, which could have impacts on both extent of hot air in North America (unlikely) and tropical cyclone development (possible). In summer, the effects of the MJO are usually most pronounced in the southern hemisphere. But if a Kelvin wave is strong enough (and the signature most recently seen along the eastern coast of India and Sri Lanka certainly is), two shifts in the atmosphere can occur above the Equator. One is str…

After two months of no rain we finally got 7 hours of rain today with 1.26 inch. Going to be balmy this weekend with the return of the sun. Long range looks like no rain till mid or late September. High yesterday was 85F, today 63F and rainy, lovely rain that will surely give all the plants a nice boost of new growth. Could be a drier warmer winter ahead if everything lines up for a supper El nino especially warmer Dec and Jan. for the PNW.

Howdyall: Put on my red shoes and did a rain dance. The BEST torrential rain pelted La Habra, and I actually stuck out my tongue, and it tasted sweet. My inner child definitely came to the fore. If I was 6, I'd have ripped off my clothes and ran around the block . . . . Ahem. Last year was SO DRY. (Last year as in Rainy season.) An Inch and a half fell, enough that I don't have to water this weekend, for the first time in Heaven only knows how long. How about the rest of you? How much did you get?

Here just northeast of Pensacola, FL, i am very impressed with how winter 2019-2020 turned out. Our lowest low was 23 degrees based on data from NAS Whiting Field. We did have several nights in the low to mid 30s with some nights dipping into the upper 20s, only one time did it ever drop below 25 degrees. The average minimum temp for the month of January was 45 degrees, and the average maximum temp for the month of January was 64 degrees. Correct me if im wrong but we had a 9a winter up here this year!
